Re-Visiting Acoustic Sounding To Advance The Measurement Of Optical Turbulence, Steven T. Fiorino, Santasri Bose-Pillai, Kevin J. Keefer

Optical turbulence, as determined by the widely accepted practice of profiling the temperature structure constant, C2T, via the measurement of ambient atmospheric temperature gradients, can be found to differ quite significantly when characterizing such gradients via thermal-couple differential temperature sensors as compared to doing so with acoustic probes such as those commonly used in sonic anemometry. Similar inconsistencies are observed when comparing optical turbulence strength derived via C2T as compared to those through direct optical or imaging measurements of small fluctuations of the index of refraction of air (i.e., scintillation). These irregularities are especially apparent …

The challenges faced with current fluorescence imaging agents have motivated us to study two nanostructures based on a hydrophobic dye, 6H-pyrrolo[3,2-b:4,5-b’]bis [1,4]benzothiazine (TRPZ). TRPZ is a heteroacene with a rigid, pi-conjugated structure, multiple reactive sites, and unique spectroscopic properties. Here we coupled TRPZ to a tert-butyl carbamate (BOC) protected 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propanoic acid (bisMPA) dendron via azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition. Deprotection of the protected amine groups on the dendron afforded a cationic terminated amphiphile, TRPZ-bisMPA. TRPZ-bisMPA was nanoprecipitated into water to obtain nanoparticles (NPs) with a hydrodynamic radius that was TRPZ-PG was encapsulated in pluronic-F127 (Mw …

Lehi And Nephi As Trained Manassite Scribes, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
This paper brings contemporary ANE scholarship in several fields together to construct an updated starting point for interpretation of the teachings of the Book of Mormon. It assembles findings from studies of ancient scribal culture, historical linguistics and epigraphy, Hebrew rhetoric, and the history and archaeology of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Levant, together with the traditions of ancient Israel to construct a contextualized perspective for understanding Lehi, Nephi, and their scribal training as they would have been understood by their contemporaries. Lehi and Nephi are shown to be the beneficiaries of the most advanced scribal training available in 7th century …
Dirac-Born-Infeld Warm Inflation Realization In The Strong Dissipation Regime, Meysam Motaharfar, Rudnei O. Ramos
Dirac-Born-Infeld Warm Inflation Realization In The Strong Dissipation Regime, Meysam Motaharfar, Rudnei O. Ramos
Faculty Publications
We consider warm inflation with a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) kinetic term in which both the non-equilibrium dissipative particle production and the sound speed parameter slow the motion of the inflaton field. We find that a low sound speed parameter removes, or at least strongly suppresses, the growing function appearing in the scalar of curvature power spectrum of warm inflation, which appears due to the temperature dependence in the dissipation coefficient. As a consequence of that, a low sound speed helps to push warm inflation into the strong dissipation regime, which is an attractive regime from a model building and phenomenological perspective. …

A search is performed for supernovalike neutrino interactions coincident with 76 gravitational wave events detected by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration. For 40 of these events, full readout of the time around the gravitational wave is available from the NOvA Far Detector. For these events, we set limits on the fluence of the sum of all neutrino flavors of F < 7(4) × 1010 cm−2 at 90% C.L. assuming energy and time distributions corresponding to the Garching supernova models with masses 9.6ð27Þ M⊙. Under the hypothesis that any given gravitational wave event was caused by a supernova, this corresponds to a distance …

Shortwave infrared (SWIR) emission has great potential for deep-tissue in vivo biological imaging with high resolution. In this article, the synthesis and characterization of two new xanthene-based RosIndolizine dyes coded PhRosIndz and tolRosIndz is presented. The dyes are characterized via femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy as well as steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopies. The emission of these dyes is shown in the SWIR region with peak emission at 1097 nm. TolRosIndz was encapsulated with an amphiphilic linear dendritic block co-polymer (LDBC) coded 10-PhPCL-G3 with high uptake yield. Further, cellular toxicity was examined in vitro using HEK (human embryonic …

Rapid Computation Of Effective Conductivity Of 2d Composites By Equivalent Circuit And Spectral Methods., Ben J. Ransom, Dean R. Wheeler
Rapid Computation Of Effective Conductivity Of 2d Composites By Equivalent Circuit And Spectral Methods., Ben J. Ransom, Dean R. Wheeler

This work presents models for homogenizing or finding the effective transport or mechanical properties of microscale composites formed from highly contrasting phases described on a grid. The methods developed here are intended for engineering applications where speed and geometrical flexibility are a premium. A canonical case that is mathematically challenging and yet can be applied to many realistic materials is a 4-phase 2-dimensional periodic checkerboard or tiling. While analytic solutions for calculating effective properties exist for some cases, versatile methods are needed to handle anisotropic and non-square grids. A reinterpretation and extension of an existing analytic solution that utilizes equivalent …

High-throughput screening has become one of the major strategies for the discovery of novel functional materials. However, its effectiveness is severely limited by the lack of sufficient and diverse materials in current materials repositories such as the open quantum materials database (OQMD). Recent progress in deep learning have enabled generative strategies that learn implicit chemical rules for creating hypothetical materials with new compositions and structures. However, current materials generative models have difficulty in generating structurally diverse, chemically valid, and stable materials. Here we propose CubicGAN, a generative adversarial network (GAN) based deep neural network model for large scale generative design …

Background: Research indicates potential cardiometabolic benefits of energy consumption earlier in the day. This study examined the association between fasting duration, timing of first and last meals, and cardiometabolic endpoints using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: Cross-sectional data from NHANES (2005–2016) were utilized. Diet was obtained from one to two 24-h dietary recalls to characterize nighttime fasting duration and timing of first and last meal. Blood samples were obtained for characterization of C-reactive protein (CRP); glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c %); insulin; glucose; and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and total cholesterol. Survey design procedures …

High-momentum configurations of nucleon pairs at short-distance are probed using measurements of the C-12(e, e' p) and C-12(e, e' pN) reactions (where N is either n or p), at high-Q(2) and x(B) > 1.1. The data span a missing-momentum range of 300-1000 MeV/c and are predominantly sensitive to the transition region of the strong nuclear interaction from a Tensor to Scalar interaction. The data are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the Generalized Contact Formalism with both chiral and phenomenological nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction models. This agreement suggests that the measured high missing-momentum protons up to 1000 MeV/c predominantly belong to short-ranged …
Multi-Gaussian Random Variables For Modeling Optical Phenomena, Olga Korotkova, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Multi-Gaussian Random Variables For Modeling Optical Phenomena, Olga Korotkova, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Faculty Publications
A generalization of the classic Gaussian random variable to the family of multi-Gaussian (MG) random variables characterized by shape parameter M > 0, in addition to the mean and the standard deviation, is introduced. The probability density function (PDF) of the MG family members is an alternating series of Gaussian functions with suitably chosen heights and widths. In particular, for integer values of M, the series has a finite number of terms and leads to flattened profiles, while reducing to the classic Gaussian PDF for M = 1. For non-integer, positive values of M, a convergent infinite series of …

Spatiotemporal Trends And Variability In The Centroid Of The Northern Hemisphere's Circumpolar Vortex, Nazla Bushra, Robert V. Rohli
Faculty Publications
Recent previous research has established the "sharpest gradient" approach to defining the circumpolar vortex and has identified correlations of the area and circularity of the Northern Hemisphere's circumpolar vortex (NHCPV) to important atmospheric-oceanic teleconnections. However, because geographical shifts in the NHCPV, independent of area or circularity changes, could affect surface environmental conditions, this research addresses the question of the extent to which the NHCPV centroid undergoes such shifts, both intra- and inter-annually. Results show that during the 1979-2017 period, the centroid has moved less on a daily basis in more recent years, perhaps indicative of a stabilization in circulation, with …

Symmetric Distinguishability As A Quantum Resource, Robert Salzmann, Nilanjana Datta, Gilad Gour, Xin Wang, Mark M. Wilde
Faculty Publications
We develop a resource theory of symmetric distinguishability, the fundamental objects of which are elementary quantum information sources, i.e. sources that emit one of two possible quantum states with given prior probabilities. Such a source can be represented by a classical-quantum state of a composite system XA, corresponding to an ensemble of two quantum states, with X being classical and A being quantum. We study the resource theory for two different classes of free operations: (i)CPTPA, which consists of quantum channels acting only on A, and (ii) conditional doubly stochastic maps acting on XA.We introduce the notion of symmetric distinguishability of …
Maximal Spacelike Surfaces In A Certain Homogeneous Lorentzian 3-Manifold, Sungwook Lee
Maximal Spacelike Surfaces In A Certain Homogeneous Lorentzian 3-Manifold, Sungwook Lee
Faculty Publications
The 2-parameter family of certain homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds, which includes Minkowski 3-space and anti-de Sitter 3-space, is considered. Each homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifold in the 2-parameter family has a solvable Lie group structure with left invariant metric. A generalized integral representation formula for maximal spacelike surfaces in the homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds is obtained. The normal Gauß map of maximal spacelike surfaces and its harmonicity are discussed.

We consider the nearest-neighbour tight binding model of the honeycomb lattice in magnetic fields and discover surprizing new analytical results that fully explain fractal spectra and experimentally observed asymmetries in the density of states of molecular graphene. We describe a fractal Cantor spectrum for irrational magnetic flux through a honeycomb, and establish the existence of zero energy Dirac cones for each rational flux with fully explicit estimates on the cone angle. Our results give a substantially more refined description of subtleties in the de Haas-van Alphen and quantum Hall effects, and provide the first quantitative bounds on transport coefficients for the …
Reducible Fermi Surface For Multi-Layer Quantum Graphs Including Stacked Graphene, Lee Fisher, Wei Li, Stephen P. Shipman
Reducible Fermi Surface For Multi-Layer Quantum Graphs Including Stacked Graphene, Lee Fisher, Wei Li, Stephen P. Shipman
Faculty Publications
We construct two types of multi-layer quantum graphs (Schrödinger operators on metric graphs) for which the dispersion function of wave vector and energy is proved to be a polynomial in the dispersion function of the single layer. This leads to the reducibility of the algebraic Fermi surface, at any energy, into several components. Each component contributes a set of bands to the spectrum of the graph operator. When the layers are graphene, AA-, AB-, and ABC-stacking are allowed within the same multi-layer structure. One of the tools we introduce is a surgery-type calculus for obtaining the dispersion function for a …

An Adaptive Data-Driven Controller For Underwater Manipulators With Variable Payload, Ignacio Carlucho, Dylan W. Stephens, Corina Barbalata
Faculty Publications
The underwater environment poses a complex problem for developing control systems for underwater manipulators. Modeling the system is a complicated and costly process due to the highly nonlinear dynamics and the presence of unknown hydrodynamical effects. Furthermore, manipulators are usually deployed on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) which further influence and change the dynamics of the arm. This is aggravated in underwater operations where manipulating different objects is necessary. These diverse manipulation tasks introduce external disturbances to the system and can lead to a fast degradation of the control system performance. In this article, we propose a novel adaptive controller for …
Bilateral Privacy-Utility Tradeoff In Spectrum Sharing Systems: A Game-Theoretic Approach, Mengmeng Liu, Xiangwei Zhou, Mingxuan Sun
Bilateral Privacy-Utility Tradeoff In Spectrum Sharing Systems: A Game-Theoretic Approach, Mengmeng Liu, Xiangwei Zhou, Mingxuan Sun
Faculty Publications
In spectrum sharing systems based on spectrum trading, user locations are vital for the efficiency of dynamic channel reuse. However, both primary users (PUs) and secondary users (SUs) undertake the risk of location information leakage: a malicious PU may illegally collect SUs' location information to manipulate market decisions; a malicious SU would threat a PU's operational privacy by inferring the PU's location through seemingly inoffensive queries. To protect both PUs' and SUs' location information in spectrum trading, a bilateral privacy preservation framework is introduced in this paper. A game-theoretic approach based on the Stackelberg model is proposed to achieve the …

Cannibalism And Synchrony In Seabird Egg-Laying Behavior, Yosia I. Nurhan, Shandelle M. Henson
Faculty Publications
During years of high sea surface temperature, food resources for glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) are scarce. In response, male gulls cannibalize the eggs of neighbors. When this occurs, female gulls in dense areas of the colony adopt a tactic of egg-laying synchrony, in which they lay eggs synchronously on an every-other-day schedule. Field observations show that the first-laid egg of each clutch is the most likely to be cannibalized. In this paper, we analyzed a discrete-time model of egg-laying behavior that tracks egg order in the nest. Using Jury conditions, we found that the equilibrium destabilizes into a two-cycle as …
Zernike Integrated Partial Phase Error Reduction Algorithm, Stephen C. Cain
Zernike Integrated Partial Phase Error Reduction Algorithm, Stephen C. Cain
Faculty Publications
A modification to the error reduction algorithm is reported in this paper for determining the prescription of an imaging system in terms of Zernike polynomials. The technique estimates the Zernike coefficients of the optical prescription as part of a modified Gerchberg-Saxton iteration combined with a new gradient-based phase unwrapping algorithm. Zernike coefficients are updated gradually as the error reduction algorithm converges by recovering the partial pupil phase that differed from the last known pupil phase estimate. In this way the wrapped phase emerging during each iteration of the error reduction algorithm does not represent the entire wrapped phase of the …

The reliability of event-related brain potential (ERP) scores depends on study context and how those scores will be used, and reliability must be routinely evaluated. Many factors can influence ERP score reliability; generalizability (G) theory provides a multifaceted approach to estimating the internal consistency and temporal stability of scores that is well suited for ERPs. G theory's approach possesses a number of advantages over classical test theory that make it ideal for pinpointing sources of error in observed scores. The current primer outlines the G-theory approach to estimating internal consistency (coefficients of equivalence) and test-retest reliability (coefficients of stability). This …

Node Generation For Rbf-Fd Methods By Qr Factorization, Tony Liu, Rodrigo B. Platte
Faculty Publications
Polyharmonic spline (PHS) radial basis functions (RBFs) have been used in conjunction with polynomials to create RBF finite-difference (RBF-FD) methods. In 2D, these methods are usually implemented with Cartesian nodes, hexagonal nodes, or most commonly, quasi-uniformly distributed nodes generated through fast algorithms. We explore novel strategies for computing the placement of sampling points for RBF-FD methods in both 1D and 2D while investigating the benefits of using these points. The optimality of sampling points is determined by a novel piecewise-defined Lebesgue constant. Points are then sampled by modifying a simple, robust, column-pivoting QR algorithm previously implemented to find sets of …

Wavefront shaping can refocus light after it reflects from an optically rough surface. One proposed use case of this effect is in indirect imaging; if any rough surface could be turned into an illumination source, objects out of the direct line of sight could be illuminated. In this paper, we demonstrate the superior performance of a genetic algorithm compared to other iterative feedback-based wavefront shaping algorithms in achieving reflective inverse diffusion for a focal plane system. Next, the ability to control the pointing direction of the refocused beam with high precision over a narrow angular range is demonstrated, though the …

We report the rate of cosmic ray air showers with multiplicities exceeding 15 muon tracks recorded in the NOvA Far Detector between May 2016 and May 2018. The detector is located on the surface under an overburden of 3.6 meters water equivalent. We observe a seasonal dependence in the rate of multiple-muon showers, which varies in magnitude with multiplicity and zenith angle. During this period, the effective atmospheric temperature and surface pressure ranged between 210 K and 230 K and 940 mbar and 990 mbar, respectively; the shower rates are anticorrelated with the variation in the effective temperature. The variations …

Over the past decade, coral restoration efforts have increased as reefs continue to decline at unprecedented rates. Identifying suitable coral outplanting locations to maximize coral survival continues to be one of the biggest challenges for restoration practitioners. Here, we demonstrate methods of using derivatives from imaging spectroscopy from the Global Airborne Observatory (GAO) to identify suitable coral outplant sites and report on the survival rates of restored coral at those sites. Outplant sites for a community-based, citizen science outplant event in Bávaro, Dominican Republic, were identified using expert-defined criteria applied to a suitability model from data layers derived from airborne …
