Background: Metals are known endocrine disruptors and have been linked to cardiometabolic diseases via multiple potential mechanisms, yet few human studies have both the exposure variability and biologically-relevant phenotype data available. We sought to examine the distribution of metals exposure and potential associations with cardiometabolic risk factors in the "Modeling the Epidemiologic Transition Study" (METS), a prospective cohort study designed to assess energy balance and change in body weight, diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk in five countries at different stages of social and economic development. Methods: Young adults (25-45 years) of African descent were enrolled (N = 500 from each …

Background: High blood pressure, blood glucose, serum cholesterol, and BMI are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and some of these factors also increase the risk of chronic kidney disease and diabetes. We estimated mortality from cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes that was attributable to these four cardiometabolic risk factors for all countries and regions from 1980 to 2010. Methods: We used data for exposure to risk factors by country, age group, and sex from pooled analyses of population-based health surveys. We obtained relative risks for the effects of risk factors on cause-specific mortality from meta-analyses of large prospective …

At the beginning of the twentieth century, librarians, teachers, and parentswrote about the dangers to children of unlimited access towhatwas termed “sensational literature.” At the beginning of the next century, they struggled to deal with the dangers to children of unlimited access to the Internet. Although separated by a hundred years, they appear to be makingmuch the same argument about themuch the same issue, that of the public library providing unlimited access tominors towhat some viewas inappropriate or dangerousmaterials. However, a closer analysis of the discourse in the professional media regarding these two controversies, one that investigates the mechanisms underlying …

We report the whole-genome sequence of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). The 2.26-Gb genome of a female marmoset was assembled using Sanger read data (6×) and a whole-genome shotgun strategy. A first analysis has permitted comparison with the genomes of apes and Old World monkeys and the identification of specific features that might contribute to the unique biology of this diminutive primate, including genetic changes that may influence body size, frequent twinning and chimerism. We observed positive selection in growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor genes (growth pathways), respiratory complex I genes (metabolic pathways), and genes encoding immunobiological factors and proteases (reproductive …

Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) are the most widespread avian brood parasite in North America, laying their eggs in the nests of approximately 250 host species that raise the cowbird nestlings as their own. It is currently unknown how these heterospecific hosts influence the cowbird gut microbiota relative to other factors, such as the local environment and genetics. We test a Nature Hypothesis (positing the importance of cowbird genetics) and a Nurture Hypothesis (where the host parents are most influential to cowbird gut microbiota) using the V6 region of 16S rRNA as a microbial fingerprint of the gut from 32 cowbird …

Comparative genetic studies of non-model organisms are transforming rapidly due to major advances in sequencing technology. A limiting factor in these studies has been the identification and screening of orthologous loci across an evolutionarily distant set of taxa. Here, we evaluate the efficacy of genomic markers targeting ultraconserved DNA elements (UCEs) for analyses at shallow evolutionary timescales. Using sequence capture and massively parallel sequencing to generate UCE data for five co-distributed Neotropical rainforest bird species, we recovered 776-1516 UCE loci across the five species. Across species, 53-77% of the loci were polymorphic, containing between 2.0 and 3.2 variable sites per …

Effects Of Coastal Urbanization On Salt-Marsh Faunal Assemblages In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Michael R. Lowe, Mark S. Peterson
Faculty Publications
Coastal landscapes in the northern Gulf of Mexico, specifically the Mississippi coast, have undergone rapid urbanization that may impact the suitability of salt-marsh ecosystems for maintaining and regulating estuarine faunal communities. We used a landscape ecology approach to quantify the composition and configuration of salt-marsh habitats and developed surfaces at multiple spatial scales surrounding three small, first-order salt-marsh tidal creeks arrayed along a gradient of urbanization in two river-dominated estuaries. From May 3 to June 4, 2010, nekton and macroinfauna were collected weekly at all six sites. Due to the greater abundance of grass shrimp Palaemonetes spp., brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus …

In the present study, an HPLC-DAD method was optimized for the quantitative determination of 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, 8-gingerol, and 10-gingerol in ginger extracts. A chromatographic fingerprinting method was also established to differentiate and evaluate the ginger extracts for bioactivity. Twentyone extracts were prepared by methods differing in ginger type (fresh versus dried), solvent, and extraction methods. The ANOVA analysis showed the methods' influence on the mean extraction yields of gingerols increased in the order of: high pressurehigh temperature (HP)>blender (BD) >low pressure (LP). The optimal solvent to extract gingerols was found to be 95% ethanol. The type of ginger used …

Objective: Obesity is linked to insulin resistance, a primary component of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. The problem of obesity-related insulin resistance is compounded when age-related skeletal muscle loss, called sarcopenia, occurs with obesity. Skeletal muscle loss results from elevated levels of protein degradation and prevention of obesity-related sarcopenic muscle loss will depend on strategies that target pathways involved in protein degradation. An extract from Artemisia dracunculus, termed PMI 5011, improves insulin signaling and increases skeletal muscle myofiber size in a rodent model of obesity-related insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of PMI …

Consumption of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) has increased in the past decade in part because of its nutritional and health attributes, and because of the availability and convenience of processed products. The sweetpotato processing industry is expanding and supplying more sweetpotato products than ever before. Unlike the medium-sized roots (U.S. no.1) preferred for fresh market, large (jumbo) roots is accepted and in certain cases desired by the processing industry, and overall yield is preferred over strict sizing requirements and aesthetic appeal. Therefore, this study investigated the yield increase and grade proportions in response to plant spacing and extension of the growing …

The effect of hot water treatment on inhibition of sprouting and spoilage of cured sweet potatoes was investigated. The surface plot showed that as processing temperature and time of hot water treatment increased, spoilage increased until treated sweet potatoes showed 100% spoilage. The contour plot indicated that regardless of processing times (6-34min), minimal sprouting (20%) was observed between 55 and 62C. Hot water treatment below 50C increased sprouting up to 100%. The overlapped contour plot indicated that hot water treatment at 53-56C for less than 10min minimized spoilage (0-20%) and sprouting (30-50%) of cured sweet potatoes. Untreated sweet potatoes (control) …

Examining The Impact Of Multicollinearity In Discovering Higher-Order Factor Models, Colleen Schwarz, Andrew Schwarz, William C. Black

Theory-driven structural equation modeling (SEM) is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing quantitative data in Information Systems research. Since 1994, 20% of all papers in top-tier journals use structural equation modeling [Urbach and Ahlemann, 2010]. Higher-order factor structures have been widely discussed from a number of theoretical perspectives [e.g., Bagozzi and Edwards, 1998; Hayduk, Ratner, Johnson and Bottorff, 1995; Law, Wong and Mobley, 1998]. Our intention is not to contradict these theoretical discussions but to postulate that empirical analysis can assist in the discovery of emergent higher-order structures where perhaps not initially proposed. As constructs have become both more numerous …

The present study investigated how Parkinson's disease (PD) affects temporal coordination among the trunk, arm, and fingers during trunk-assisted reach-to-grasp movements. Seated participants with PD and healthy controls made prehensile movements. During the reach to the object, the involvement of the trunk was altered based on the instruction; the trunk was not involved, moved forward (flexion), or moved backward (extension) in the sagittal plane. Each of the trunk movements was combined with an extension or flexion motion of the arm during the reach. For the transport component, the individuals with PD substantially delayed the onset of trunk motion relative to …

We previously reported the presence of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in pentachlorophenol (PCP) contaminated soils at a closed wood treatment facility site in Georgia. The reported EPFRs were pentachlorophenoxyl radicals formed on soils under ambient conditions via electron transfer from PCP to electron acceptors in the soil. In this study, we present results for soil and sediment samples from additional Superfund sites in Montana and Washington. Paramagnetic centers associated with different chemical environments were characterized by distinct g-factors and line widths (ΔHp-p). EPFR concentrations in contaminated samples were ∼30×, ∼12×, and ∼2× higher than background samples at the Georgia, …

An AFM with a 30 nm radius gold-coated silicon tip was used to image the sample and to hold the tip 15 nm from the surface for material removal using a 355 nm Nd:YAG laser. The ablated material was captured on a silver wire that was held 300 μm vertically and 100 μm horizontally from the tip. For …

The United States finds itself in an era where the cost of state prisons is both extremely large and politically salient. State prisons held approximately 1.3 million people in 2012, almost twice as many people as county jails and more than five times as many as federal prisons. The total cost of state corrections in2010 was $48.5 billion. In response, states nationwide are now experimenting with ways to reduce their role in imprisonment. The United States Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance launched the Justice Reinvestment Initiative to promote policies that reduce prison populations; the seventeen states that have …

The mosquito Culex coronator (Dyar and Knab) (Diptera: Culicidae) has undergone rapid range expansion in the United States since 2003, with its historical distribution in the southwest expanding eastward to the Atlantic coast. Although Cx. coronator nominally use small natural aquatic habitats for development, the use of containers (e.g., tires) makes it potentially important as container invasive. To determine the potential ecological effects of Cx. coronator on resident container species, we conducted a laboratory experiment to assess its competitive ability with two common tire-inhabiting species, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae). Larvae were reared under a factorial …
