The Forum Of Conscience: Applying Standards Under The Free Exercise Clause, Paul Marcus
The Forum Of Conscience: Applying Standards Under The Free Exercise Clause, Paul Marcus
Faculty Publications
The 1973 Supreme Court decision in Wisconsin v. Yoder reenforced and amplified the Court's earlier holding in Sherbert v. Verner that the free exercise clause of the first amendment requires the state to render substantial deference to religiously motivated behavior in the application of its laws and regulatory schemes. In this article, Mr. Marcus traces the evolving standards of free exercise doctrine and observes that the "balancing test" which has resulted from that evolution requires still further refinement to give religious freedom its full constitutional due. The author then illustrates how the new standards of free exercise might be applied …

California Teacher Development Project; Fremont Esea Title 3, Dissemination Grant Period. Evaluation Report 1972-73., Warren Kallenbach

The evaluation of the California Teacher Development Project for the 1972-73 project year reports data for four performance criteria. These criteria relate to the expected behavioral changes of teachers involved in an inservice workshop program in individualizing instruction. One criterion relates to teacher knowledge of individualized instruction (cognitive behavior); three criteria relate to teacher attitude toward individualized instruction. To determine the effectiveness of the 1972-73 inservice program, a comparison group was formed using data from participants in the 1971-72 program. Instruments used to measure the effectiveness of the workshop program were: (a) the Fremont Test of Individualized Instruction, (b) the …

Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher

A speech analysis-synthesis system was used to manipulate variance of fundamental frequency and a mechanical rate changer was used to manipulate speech rate. The synthesized and altered voices were tested for realism. Synthesized voices were mistaken for normal 50% to 58% of the time and rate-changed voices were mistaken for normal 78% of the time. Additional studies were conducted to test the effects of these acoustical manipulations on the adjective ratings judges made of speakers. Variance of intonation was increased and decreased by 50% for eight speakers. There was a significantrend for increased intonation to cause voices to be rated …
The Effects Of An Individualized Instruction Workshop And Its Related Follow-Up Program On The Attitudes And Behavior Of Selected Elementary Teachers And Their Students: Final Report, Helen Dell, Warren Kallenbach
The Effects Of An Individualized Instruction Workshop And Its Related Follow-Up Program On The Attitudes And Behavior Of Selected Elementary Teachers And Their Students: Final Report, Helen Dell, Warren Kallenbach
Faculty Publications
The effects of an individualized instruction workshop and its related follow-up program on the attitudes and behavior of selected elementary teachers and their students were discussed in this report. Participants were teachers in a four-day workshop on individualizing instruction. The workshop included training in classroom procedures, managing physical facilities, utilizing human resources, and developing techniques for encouraging students to be self-managing. Evaluation methods, questionnaires and observation indicated a favorable change in teacher behavior. The effects of the inservice program for teachers indicated little or no affect on student attitude and independent work habits. (Appendixes of related program material and a …

Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
The key pecking of two pigeons was reinforced with food on a progressive‐ratio schedule, which required an increasing number of responses for each successive reinforcement: 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. When the subject failed to complete the next ratio in the sequence within 60 min, the session terminated. The number of responses in the final completed ratio was defined as the “breaking point”. After the breaking point had stabilized (60 sessions), it served as a baseline to assess the effects of varying doses (5 to 80 mg/kg) of chlordiazepoxide and phenobarbital, administered intramuscularly 30 min before the sessions. Both drugs …

An Assessment Of The Differences Between High And Low Achieving Students. Final Report, Ralph Scott, Jon A. Ford

Primarily a longitudinal and quantitative analysis of achievement functioning; this experiment sought to identify factors which promote or impair the learning of individual children. The 683 Junior High students were divided into one of eight groups according to sex; race and whether their seventh grade Iowa Test of Basic Skills Composite score was above or below that expected from their Kindergarten Metropolitan Readiness Test performance. The incidence of males and females making unexpected gains (Ups) or losses (Downs) was approximately the same; but a significantly greater proportion of black children made greater than expected achievement gains. Thirty-three Up Ss were …

A brief history of the integration efforts of the school and the resulting interracial conflict is presented. From this background evolved the cross-cultural groups which are the focus of this paper. Essentially; discussion was used for exploring the issues which were identified as impediments to good relationships within the school; (1) too few black faculty and students; (2) the impact of "Tomism;" (3) geographic location of students' homes; (4) differing interests of black and white students; (5) the need for extra-school interracial contact; and (6) inhibitions; both social and parental; against interracial contact; especially dating. The results of a questionnaire; …

Theories Of Water Pollution Litigation, Peter N. Davis

The common law has traditionally provided the rules that govern relationships among landowners in their use of watercourses. These rules are embodied in the eastern United States in the doctrine of riparian rights, which addresses itself both to water quantity, and to water quality. Persons complaining of pollution of waters abutting their lands have, in addition to redress by complaint to the state pollution control agency, redress by lawsuit against the alleged polluter. This common law supplements the body of statutory law regulating the waters of the state for the benefit of the people.

Calcitonin Activity In Ultimobranchial Neoplasms From Bulls, D. M. Young, C. C. Capen, H. E. Black

Ultimobranchial neoplasms from 5 bulls (hat were extracted and assayed individually contained approximately 68% as much calcitonin activity (452 ± 68 MRC mU/g) as thyroid glands from control bulls (663 ± 165 MRC mU/g). These results were consistent with the ultrastructural finding that thyroid neoplasms in old bulls were composed of primitive ultimobranchial cells which contained few mature secretory granules characteristic of parafollicular (C-) cells. Significant difference in calcitonin concentration was not detected between thyroid glands of control cows (617 ± 106 MRC mU/g) and bulls without ultimobranchial neoplasms. © 1971, American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
