Postsynaptic Ca2+, But Not Cumulative Depolarization, Is Necessary For The Induction Of Associative Plasticity In Hermissenda, Ronald F. Rogers, R. F. Matzel Jan 1993

Postsynaptic Ca2+, But Not Cumulative Depolarization, Is Necessary For The Induction Of Associative Plasticity In Hermissenda, Ronald F. Rogers, R. F. Matzel

Faculty Publications

The neuronal modifications that underlie associative memory in Hermissenda have their origins in a synaptic interaction between the visual and vestibular systems, and can be mimicked by contiguous in vitro stimulation of these converging pathways. At the offset of vestibular stimulation (i.e., hair cell activity), the B photoreceptors are briefly released from synaptic inhibition resulting in a slight depolarization (2–4 mV). If contiguous pairings of light-induced depolarization and presynaptic vestibular activity occur in close temporal succession, this depolarization “accumulates” and has been hypothesized to culminate in a sustained rise in intracellular Ca2+ and a resultant Ca(2+)-mediated phosphorylation of K+ channels …

Plasma Total Glutathione In Humans And Its Association With Demographic And Health-Related Factors, Elaine W. Flagg, Ralph J. Coates, J. William Eley, Raymond S. Greenberg, Dean P. P. Jones, Elaine W. Gunter, Bethany Jackson

Faculty Publications

The tripeptide glutathione is proposed to be protective against a number of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and cancer. However, there have been few studies of plasma glutathione levels in humans and in those studies the numbers of participants have been very small. In an exploratory analysis the determinants of plasma total glutathione (GSHt) were investigated in a group of 100 volunteers aged 18–61 years in Atlanta, Georgia, USA during June and July 1989. Data on demographic and health-related factors were collected by interview and plasma GSHt was measured using a recently modified laboratory method. The mean concentration of plasma …

Correlates To Performance On Field Tests Of Muscular Strength, Jeffrey A. Woods, Russell R. Pate, Maria L. Burgess

Faculty Publications

Field tests of upper body muscular strength and endurance (UBMSE) are often administered to children, but little is known about the determinants of performance on these tests. Therefore the purpose of this investigation was to examine potential determinants of performance on several common field tests of UBMSE including pull-ups, flexed-arm hang, push-ups, and two types of modified pull-ups. Subjects were 56 girls, and 38 boys, ages 9 to 11 years. Potential determinants assessed were age, height, weight, gender, % fat, physical activity, and laboratory measures of muscular strength and endurance. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the laboratory measures of UBMSE …

While the history books refer to hemophilia as the disease of kings because it was once common among European royalty, the disorder now makes headlines for a completely different reason. It is estimated that at least 70% of the hemophiliacs whoo received blood products between 1978 and 1985 have been infected with HIV.

Dna Diversity Among Clinical Isolates Of Helicobacter Pylori Detected By Pcr-Based Rapd Fingerprinting, Natalia Akopyanz, Nickolai O. Bukanov, T. Ulf Westblom, Stephen Kresovich, Douglas E. Berg

Faculty Publications

The RAPD (or AP-PCR) DNA fingerprinting method was used to distinguish among clinical isolates of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium whose long term carriage is associated with gastritis, peptic ulcers and gastric carcinomas. This method uses arbitrarily chosen oligonucleotides to prime DNA sythesis from genomic sites to which they are fortuitously matched, or almost matched. Most 10-nt primers with > 60% G + C yielded strain-specific arrays of up to 15 prominent fragments, as did most longer ( > 17-nt) primers, whereas most 10-nt primers with 50% G +C did not. Each of 64 independent H.pylori isolates, 60 of which were from …

Culturally Competent Occupational Therapy In A Diversely Populated Mental Health Setting, Maria Dillard, Lynne Andonian, Olivia Flores, Lisa Anne Lai, Anne Macrae, Muhjah Shakir

Faculty Publications

Cultural sensitivity is a crucial component of health care provision, particularly in psychiatric settings. As society becomes more multicultural, it is essential for occupational therapists to continue to develop cultural competence, which is defined in this paper as an awareness of, sensitivity to, and knowledge of the meaning of culture. At San Francisco General Hospital, an innovative multicultural model consisting of special focus programs is used. The key to the success of such programs is a culturally competent professional staff.

A Descriptive Analysis And Academic Genealogy Of Major Contributors To Jtpe In The 1980s, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Information about whose knowledge is accepted as important is valuable in understanding how a profession evolves. The term elders describes the individuals who control invisible networks of prestige and who determine what information is accepted for publication in professional journals. These published works stand as the foundation for the knowledge base of a discipline. The purpose of this article was to identify the elders in physical education teacher education (PETE) and to trace their academic genealogy. Elders were defined as major contributors to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education from 1981 through 1989. The articles published by these subjects …

An Improved Choice: The Virginia Limited Liability Company, James J. Wheaton Jul 1992

An Improved Choice: The Virginia Limited Liability Company, James J. Wheaton

Faculty Publications

When the General Assembly adopted the Virginia Limited Liability Company Act (the "Act")' in 1991, Virginia joined just four other states in recognizing the potential of a relatively obscure business entity, the limited liability company ("LLC"). The LLC concept has spread rapidly since the adoption of the Virginia Act early last year. Three other states enacted LLC legislation in 1991, and in just the first few months of 1992, six more states followed the trend.

An Attributional Analysis Of Resistance To Group Pressure Regarding Illicit Drug And Alcohol Consumption, Randall L. Rose, William O. Bearden, Jesse E. Teel

Faculty Publications

This article investigates the role of attributional thinking in generating resistance to pressures toward conformity in the illicit consumption of drugs and alcohol. The results of four studies regarding how conformity influences illicit drug and alcohol consumption among high school and college students are reported. In study 1 more than two-thirds of the respondents reported concern for the implications of their own dissent or compliance regarding the reactions of their peers. Study 2 demonstrated a significant relationship between high school students' attributional thinking concerning a peer group's illicit beer consumption and conformity, expressed as intentions to drink the beer. In …

Pine Tip Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Infestation Rates As Influenced By Site And Stand Characteristics In Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas, James R. Meeker, David Kulhavy Jan 1992

Pine Tip Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Infestation Rates As Influenced By Site And Stand Characteristics In Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas, James R. Meeker, David Kulhavy

Faculty Publications

Three young loblolly pine plantations grown on contrasting soil types produced quantitatively and qualitatively different host material for pine tip moths during 1985 and 1986. Amounts, periodicity, and availability of soil moisture regulated internal moisture conditions within host trees. Host xylem moisture potential in conjunction with soil nutrient status governed tree growth and influenced pine tip moth infestation rates.

Pines on a sandy site exhibited the poorest growth with lowest infestation rates, indicative of low-quality hosts with little if any tolerance to damage. A clayey site produced vigorous plant growth with moderate infestation rates. The less apparent hosts appeared capable …

Relationship Between Anxiety, Self-Confidence, And Evaluation Of Coaching Behaviors, Laura J. Kenow, Jean M. Williams Jan 1992

Relationship Between Anxiety, Self-Confidence, And Evaluation Of Coaching Behaviors, Laura J. Kenow, Jean M. Williams

Faculty Publications

Two experiments examined Smoll and Smith's (1989) model of leadership behaviors in sport. The coaching behaviors of a male head coach of a collegiate women's basketball team (n=11 players) were examined. The data supported competitive trait anxiety as an individual-difference variable that mediates athletes' perception and evaluation of coaching behaviors. There also was support for adding athletes' state cognitive anxiety, state self-confidence and perception of the coach's cognitive anxiety to the model as individual-difference variables. Athletes who scored high in trait anxiety (p<.001) and state cognitive anxiety (p<.05) and low in state self-confidence (p<.05), and athletes who perceived the coach as high in state cognitive anxiety (p<.001), evaluated coaching behavior more negatively. Game outcome may influence the effect of self-confidence in mediating athletes' perception and evaluation of coaching behaviors. Additionally, athletes perceived several specific coaching behaviors more negatively than did the coach, and athletes drastically overestimated their coach's self-reported pregame cognitive and somatic anxiety and underestimated his self-confidence. Overall, the results suggest that coaches should be more supportive and less negative with high anxious and low self-confident athletes.
