Oxidative Phosphorylation And The Realkalinization Of Intracellular Ph During Recovery From Anoxia In Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Kurt E. Kwast, Joseph I. Shapiro, Bernard B. Rees, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

The contribution of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation to the realkalinization of intracellular pH (pHi) and resynthesis of purine nucleotides during recovery from anoxia was investigated in embryos of Artemia franciscana by assessing the sensitivity of mitochondrial respiration to pH, calculating proton consumption by oxidative phosphorylation, and measuring changes in pHi using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance. Following short-term anoxia, pHi increased from 6.7 to 7.7 during 20 min of aerobic recovery and was temporally correlated with a large increase in ATP. State 3 respiration rates of isolated mitochondria were not substantially compromised at the acidic pH corresponding to the pHi during anoxia …

The Limits Of Quantitative Legal Analyses: Chaos In Legal Scholarship And Fdic V. W.R. Grace & Co., Royce De R. Barondes

Faculty Publications

This Article identifies a few of those techniques by examining a number of quasi-quantitative legal analyses that have addressed a range of legal relationships. The methodology of this Article consists of reviewing the relationship between those legal analyses and their associated non-legal disciplines. The unifying theme of the discussed examples is that a useful, well constructed quantitative analysis or approach has been improperly extended into a legal context.

Murine hepatitis virus strain (MHV-3) produces a strain-dependent pattern of disease which has been used as a model for fulminant viral hepatitis. This study was undertaken to examine whether there was a correlation between macrophage activation and susceptibility or resistance to MHV-3 infection. Peritoneal macrophages were isolated from resistant A/J and susceptible BALB/cJ mice and, following stimulation with MHV-3 or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), analyzed for transcription of mRNA and production of interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), mouse fibrinogen-like protein (musfiblp), tissue factor (TF), leukotriene B4, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Macrophages from BALB/cJ mice produced …

Geodemographic Approaches To Identifying U.S. Furniture Markets, Frank M. Howell, Larry Doolittle, Jarryl B. Ritchie, Melissa A. Barfield, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Demand for household furniture is shaped by a multitude of dynamic forces, from the global economic situation to subtle changes in consumer preferences. Correspondingly, the academic disciplines employed to identify, analyze, and predict these forces range from macroeconomics to psychology, and include demography, sociology, geography, and several applied fields. The demographic characteristics of furniture consumers has been a particularly popular area of research, primarily because of the availability of secondary data from various public · agencies. Some of this research is reviewed in a subsequent section of this report.

Impacts Of Seasonality And Nutrients On Microbial Mat Community Structure And Function, James L. Pinckney, Hans W. Paerl, M. Fitzpatrick

Faculty Publications

To understand the mechanisms responsible for seasonal fluctuations in growth and N2 fixation in intertidal microbial mat communities, we quantified seasonal changes in mat community composition, related these changes to diel and seasonal N2 fixation rates, and evaluated community responses (growth, N2fixation, composition) to long-term (22 d) nutrient addition bioassays. A temperate intertidal cyanobacterial mat community, located in coastal North Carolina, USA, was sampled at monthly intervals for 1 yr (1993-94) to determine changes in community composition. The abundances of major phototrophic groups were quantified based on the relative concentrations of taxaspecific photopigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids). …

What Journals Do Psychology Graduate Students Need?, Margaret Sylvia

Faculty Publications

The increasing price of journal subscriptions and the increasing number of journals available make it difficult for libraries to supply all needed material locally for scholarly research. Bibliographic citation analysis of student research papers is one method of evaluating the use of a journal collection. Journal selection and cancellation may be done on the basis of cost-per-use to maximize the usefulness of materials purchased with the library budget. Theses provide a convenient archival resource of student research. This study used the biblio-graphic citations found in theses and dissertations of graduate students in the psychology and counseling departments of the university, …

Improving America's Health Care: Authorizing Independent Prescriptive Privileges For Advanced Practice Nurses, Mary M. Beck Jul 1995

Improving America's Health Care: Authorizing Independent Prescriptive Privileges For Advanced Practice Nurses, Mary M. Beck

Faculty Publications

Nursing and organized medicine are engaged in a heated and emotional debate over independent prescriptive privileges for advanced practice nurses. Uncontroverted data demonstrates that nurse practitioners provide high quality health care at a reduced cost, while increasing access to health care for under-served populations. It is apparent that advanced practice nurses could improve the delivery of American health care. However, organized medicine is opposed to autonomous advanced nursing practice and lobbies powerfully against it. Currently, the majority of state laws and regulations pertaining to advanced practice nursing do not promote a sound public health policy, do not contemplate liability issues …

Local Initiation Of Spermatogenesis In The Horse, A. J. Clemmons, D. L. Thompson, L. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Gross observation of testicular parenchyma of 1.5 to 2-yr-old horses reveals both light and dark regions. If this gross, differential shading reflects quantitative differences in the development of spermatogenesis and interstitial cell populations, the horse may prove to be a useful model for study of the paracrine relationships associated with initiation of spermatogenesis. The objective of this study was to characterize seminiferous tubules and interstitium of testes with gross, differential shading. Testes with both light and dark regions of parenchyma were obtained from horses 1.5- 2 yr old and compared to parenchyma of fetal, 2-yr old, or 5-yr-old horses. Stereology …

Outpatient Civil Commitment In North Carolina: Constitutional And Policy Concerns, Erika Lietzan

Faculty Publications

This article examines preventive outpatient commitment, which targets those not ill or dangerous enough to be committed to inpatient facilities under state commitment laws. After discussing the history and design of the NC scheme, it explores constitutional and practical difficulties. Ultimately, it argues that individualized case management through local mental health clinics is the more effective and humane way of serving the interests of both the individual and the state.

Health Care Rationing And Disability Rights, Philip G. Peters Jr. Apr 1995

Health Care Rationing And Disability Rights, Philip G. Peters Jr.

Faculty Publications

This article explores the extent to which federal disability rights law limits the use of effectiveness criteria to allocate health care, either alone or as a part of cost-effectiveness analyses. To be more precise, it considers the circumstances in which disability-based classifications by health plans which would otherwise violate the anti-discrimination laws can be legally and ethically defended by proof that the excluded treatments are less effective than those which are provided. Part I introduces the expanding use of effectiveness analysis in health care, explains its discriminatory potential, and reviews the Oregon experience. Part II outlines the current federal law …

Children's Rights In Intercountry Adoption: Towards A New Goal, S. I. Strong Apr 1995

Children's Rights In Intercountry Adoption: Towards A New Goal, S. I. Strong

Faculty Publications

Each year, hundreds of thousands of children languish in foster or institutional care worldwide, while at the same time, thousands of adults, married and unmarried alike, are denied children because of “shortages.” How did this tragedy occur, and why does it continue to be repeated daily in countries around the world? The unfortunate truth is that many of the legal and societal norms now in place effectively prohibit needy children from finding suitable homes. While potential parents in Western countries cry out for babies of their own, millions of children live in physical and psychological poverty in underfunded orphanages around …

Striker Replacements: A Law, Economics, And Negotiations Approach, Rafael Gely, Leonard Bierman Apr 1995

Striker Replacements: A Law, Economics, And Negotiations Approach, Rafael Gely, Leonard Bierman

Faculty Publications

In this article, we directly attack Professors Wachter and Cohen's assertion regarding the economic efficiency of the Mackay doctrine. Applying internal and external labor market analysis, we argue that the Mackay doctrine is economically inefficient because it allows employers to behave “opportunistically” with respect to employees that have made “firm-specific” investments in their employing firms. To remedy this problem we propose a new “negotiations approach,” the components of which are: (1) the statutory overruling of Mackay, and (2) the concomitant amendment of the NLRA to make the striker replacement issue a “mandatory” subject of collective bargaining.

The New Federalism, Richard C. Reuben

the 10th Amendment was something they noted for the bar exam and then promptly forgot about. But for many conservative lawyers and politicians, the 10th Amendment- which reserves to the states all powers not given to the federal government-has been anything but academic. For them, it embodies the founders' promise for a nation in which the states and federal government are near-equal partners. And they have fought long and hard to give the amendment its proper due. As the rise of House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., and his Contract with America attest, their day may have finally come. Today, federalism, …

Accuracy Of Deoxynucleotide Incorporation By Soybean Chloroplast Dna-Polymerases Is Independent Of The Presence Of A 3' To 5' Exonuclease, J. Clinton Bailey Ii, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon Apr 1995

Accuracy Of Deoxynucleotide Incorporation By Soybean Chloroplast Dna-Polymerases Is Independent Of The Presence Of A 3' To 5' Exonuclease, J. Clinton Bailey Ii, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon

Faculty Publications

DNA polymerase was purified from soybean (Glycine max) chloroplasts that were actively replicating DNA. The main form (form I) of the enzyme was associated with a low level of 3' to 5' exonuclease activity throughout purification, although the ratio of exonuclease to polymerase activity decreased with each successive purification step. A second form (form II) of DNA polymerase, which elutes from DEAE-cellulose at a higher salt concentration than form I, was devoid of any exonuclease activity. To assess the potential function of the 3' to 5' exonuclease in proofreading, the fidelity of deoxynucleotide incorporation was measured for form I DNA …

The North American Agreement On Labor Cooperation: A New Frontier In North American Labor Relations, Rafael Gely, Leonard Bierman Apr 1995

The North American Agreement On Labor Cooperation: A New Frontier In North American Labor Relations, Rafael Gely, Leonard Bierman

Faculty Publications

During the debate leading to the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (“NAFTA”), a great deal of concern focused on the effect that a trade agreement such as the NAFTA might have on workers' rights. As a condition for the ratification of the NAFTA, Congress provided that the treaty would not “enter into force until the three countries enact their own national agreement on labor cooperation.” In response to this concern, the three signatory countries negotiated the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (“NAALC” or “Labor Agreement”). The NAALC establishes a formal and elaborate procedure to settle complaints …

Small Business Transformation: The Meds Approach, Ravi S. Behara, David E. Gundersen Jan 1995

Small Business Transformation: The Meds Approach, Ravi S. Behara, David E. Gundersen

Faculty Publications

In today's rapidly changing business environment, small businesses must gain a deeper understanding of the future to develop strategies that will provide them with sustainable competitive advantage. The traditional approaches to strategy formulation are inadequate in an environment that is complex and dynamic. This paper investigates a "new" approach that helps small businesses "see the future." It discusses an application of the multi equilibrium dissipative structures (MEDS) approach to strategy formulation within the context of a small business involved in medical management software development. The dissipative systems approach can be used to evaluate the critical discontinuities that a small business …

Association Of Mouse Fibrinogen-Like Protein With Murine Hepatitis Virus-Induced Prothrombinase Activity, Rebecca D. Parr, Laisum Fung, Jeffrey Reneker, Nancy Myers-Mason, Julian L. Leibowitz, Gary Levy

Faculty Publications

Previously, we demonstrated induction of a unique macrophage prothrombinase during infection of BALB/cJ mice by mouse hepatitis virus strain 3 (MHV-3). By immunologic screening, a clone representing this prothrombinase was isolated from a cDNA library and sequenced. The sequence identified this clone as representing part of a gene, musfiblp, that encodes a fibrinogen-like protein. Six additional clones were isolated, and one clone, p11-3-1, encompassed the entire coding region of musfiblp. Murine macrophages did not constitutively express musfiblp but, when infected with MHV-3, synthesized musfiblp-specific mRNA. musfiblp mRNA induction was earlier and significantly greater in BALB/cJ than A/J …

Your Honor What I Meant To State Was . . .: A Comparative Analysis Of The Judicial And Evidentiary Admission Doctrines As Applied To Counsel Statements In Pleadings, Open Court, And Memoranda Of Law, Ediberto Román

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the law regarding party admissions; specifically as applied to statements in pleadings, open court, and memoranda of law. In particular, this article will: (1) provide a detailed description of the two types of admissions counsel make; (2) address courts' treatment of attorneys' admissions in different circumstances; and (3) provide an argument for treating attorneys' admissions in memoranda of law similar to admissions in open court or in pleadings. The goal of this article is to provide a blueprint of the law on admissions, an area of law where all to often counsel pays little attention, and to …

Deference, Defiance, And Useful Arts, Craig Allen Nard Jan 1995

Deference, Defiance, And Useful Arts, Craig Allen Nard

Faculty Publications

My objective in this Article is to demonstrate that the PTO's patentability determinations are questions of policy and, therefore, the Federal Circuit's standards of review, as applied to these determinations, are unsound. With respect to the Commissioner's statutory interpretations, I intend to demonstrate that the court's “traditional factors of statutory construction,” which are used in such a way as to avoid deferring to the PTO, result in irrational decisions, or at the very least, an alternative theory of interpretation no more convincing than that put forth by the PTO. My principle assertion, grounded in both doctrine and policy, is that …
