Three-jet production in the reaction ep → eXp has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 42.74 pb-1.The data were measured in the kinematic region 5 < Q2 < 100 GeV2, 200 < W < 250 GeV and 23 < MX < 40 GeV. The diffractive signal was selected by requiring a large rapidity gap in the outgoing proton direction. Jets were reconstructed in the centre-of-mass system of X using the exclusive kT-algorithm. A sample of three-jet events in diffraction has been identified. Differential cross sections were measured as a function of the jet pseudorapidity and jet transverse momentum with respect to the virtual photon-pomeron axis. The jets going in the pomeron direction are broader than those going in the virtual-photon direction. This is consistent with models predicting that gluons are predominantly produced in the pomeron direction and quarks in the virtual-photon direction. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Commentary: Considerations For Use Of Racial/Ethnic Classification In Etiologic Research, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper
Commentary: Considerations For Use Of Racial/Ethnic Classification In Etiologic Research, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper
Faculty Publications
Numerous authors have critiqued the use of race as an etiologic quantity in medical research. Despite this criticism, the use of variables encoding racial/ethnic categorization has increased in epidemiology, and most researchers agree that important variation in disease risk is captured by this classification system. Previous discussions have generally neglected to articulate guidelines for appropriate use of racial/ethnic information in etiologic research. The authors summarize the logical, conceptual, and practical problems associated with the "ethnic paradigm" as currently applied in biomedical sciences and offer a set of methodological recommendations toward more valid use of racial/ethnic classification in etiologic studies. These …

The Decision To Breastfeed In The United States: Does Race Matter?, Renata Forste Phd, Jessica Weiss Bs, Emily Lippincott Bs
Faculty Publications
Objectives. To estimate the effects of maternal and birth characteristics on the decision to breastfeed and to relate breastfeeding practices to racial differences in infant mortality.
Methods. Using a sample of women with young children from the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), Cycle V, 1995, the likelihood of breastfeeding was modeled using logistic regression techniques. In addition, single, live births from the NSFG 1988 and 1995 surveys were analyzed to model the effects of race and breastfeeding on infant mortality using Cox regression methods.
Results. After controlling for socioeconomic background and birth characteristics, race remained a strong predictor of …
Green Electrochemistry. Examples And Challenges, Michael A. Matthews
Green Electrochemistry. Examples And Challenges, Michael A. Matthews
Faculty Publications
Electrochemical methods have been proposed for synthesis of organic compounds, including conversion of CO2. Such methods may provide a basis for environmentally friendly and sustainable methods for chemical production. Nevertheless, electrochemical syntheses are not widely utilized. Several examples of ongoing research are presented that illustrate both the opportunities as well as the challenges associated with the utilization of electrochemistry for green chemical manufacturing.

Teaching Torts Without Insurance: A Second-Best Solution, David A. Fischer, Robert H. Jerry Ii
Teaching Torts Without Insurance: A Second-Best Solution, David A. Fischer, Robert H. Jerry Ii
Faculty Publications
Teachers, scholars and practitioners have long appreciated the symbiotic relationship of torts and insurance. Indeed, the assertion that tort law and insurance law are intertwined is utterly unremarkable; many commentators have observed that tort law cannot be understood if the business of insurance and the law regulating it is ignored, and that insurance law cannot be understood if tort law is ignored. Several generations of law students have read casebooks, which in varying degrees pay homage to the connections between torts and insurance. Many law review articles and noteworthy books (or portions thereof) have plumbed the tort-insurance relationship. Although one …
Economy And 'New Economy' In The United States And Germany, Phillip J. Bryson
Economy And 'New Economy' In The United States And Germany, Phillip J. Bryson
Faculty Publications
The expression "New Economy" is used inconsistently. This Article review the driving forces of the US boom of the 1990s, examining the changes introduced in the period and before, focusing on the IT sector and new technologies. The "New Economy" is not just the new sectors, but changes in the overall economy emanating from them. These changes will not evaporate in an economic slowdown. Comparisons of the USA with Germany and Europe illustrate that the "New Economy" will also continue to develop there on the foundations already laid.
Embryonic Stem Cell Research As An Ethical Issue: On The Emptiness Of Symbolic Value, Kevin Quinn
Embryonic Stem Cell Research As An Ethical Issue: On The Emptiness Of Symbolic Value, Kevin Quinn
Faculty Publications
The ability to generate a wide variety of stem cell lines (in relatively renewable tissue cultures) opens up a whole new world of breathtaking possibilities for science and medicine. The possibilities include: "in vitro studies of normal embryo-genesis, human gene discovery, and drug and teratogen testing and as a renewable source of cells for tissue transplantation, cell replacement, and gene therapies." But it also opens up a world of complications.
Human EG and ES cells must be recovered from aborted fetuses or live embryos. Because primordial gonadal tissue is removed from fetuses after their death, the derivation of EO cells …

Experimental Evaluation Of Vitellogenin As A Predictive Biomarker For Reproductive Disruption, Ann Oliver Cheek, Thea Hoexum Brouwer, Suzanne Carroll, Steve Manning, John A. Mclachlan, Marius Brouwer
Faculty Publications
Vitellogenin (VTG) synthesis in male oviparous vertebrates is used as an indicator of environmental estrogen exposure, but the relationship between elevated VTG levels and the effects of environmental estrogens on reproductive success are poorly understood. To examine whether altered VTG expression predicts reproductive impairment, we exposed medaka (Oryzias latipes) for 2 or 8 weeks posthatch to 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 7.5 ppb of the environmental estrogen o,p ' -DDT. Fish were sampled 2, 4, and 8 weeks after hatch to examine VTG expression and gonad development. After exposure, fish were transferred to clean water, grown to sexual maturity, and …
The Power Of Apology And The Process Of Historical Reconciliation, Robert R. Weyeneth
The Power Of Apology And The Process Of Historical Reconciliation, Robert R. Weyeneth
Faculty Publications
The article analyzes one of the ways that history makes the headlines today: in discussions of whether the present can--and should--apologize for the past. It examines this recent phenomenon by asking if historical apologies have the ability to facilitate a process of historical reconciliation. In its first three sections, the article explores the range and forms of apologies reported in the press during the last decade or so, the motives and goals of apologists, and the reasoning of those with misgivings about the utility and wisdom of apologies. A fourth section assesses the efficacy of historical apologies. Is an apology …

Religion And The First Amendment: Some Causes Of The Recent Confusion, Carl H. Esbeck
Religion And The First Amendment: Some Causes Of The Recent Confusion, Carl H. Esbeck
Faculty Publications
The United States Supreme Court is surely guilty of making the matter of religion and the First Amendment harder than it ought to be. But it is others who have kept the debate over church/state relations either poisoned with culture-war rhetoric or so shrouded in mystery that seemingly only experts can untangle the juris-prudential snarls. By surrounding this venerable Amendment with a pseudocomplexity concerning the matter of religion these disinformation specialists create confusion, and confusion begets opportunities for further distortion and manipulation. Disagreements over the free exercise of religion and the no-establishment thereof are far simpler to resolve than these …

The photoproduction of prompt photons, together with an accompanying jet, has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. A study of the effective transverse momentum, (kT), of partons in the proton, as modelled within the framework of the PYTHIA Monte Carlo, gives a value of (kT) = 1.69 ± 0.18 -0.20+0.18 GeV for the γp centre-of-mass energy range 134 < W < 251 GeV. This result is in agreement with the previously observed trend in hadron-hadron scattering for (kT) to rise with interaction energy. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

Multiplicity moments of charged particles in deep inelastic e+p scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.4 pb-1. The moments for Q2 > 1000 GeV2 were studied in the current region of the Breit frame. The evolution of the moments was investigated as a function of restricted regions in polar angle and, for the first time, both in the transverse momentum and in absolute momentum of final-state particles. Analytic perturbative QCD predictions in conjunction with the hypothesis of Local Parton-Hadron Duality (LPHD) reproduce the trends of the moments in polar-angle regions, although some …

Comparative Phylogeography Of Mesoamerican Highland Rodents: Concerted Versus Independent Response To Past Climatic Fluctuations, Duke S. Rogers, Jack Sullivan, Elizabeth Arellano
Faculty Publications
The phylogeography of Sumichrast's harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys sumichrasti) was examined through maximumlikelihood and parsimony analyses of 1,130 bp of mitochondrial Cytochrome b sequence data from 43 individuals. The phylogeography of this Middle American highland forest-dwelling species was compared to that previously published for the codistributed Aztec deer mouse complex (Peromyscus aztecus/Peromyscus hylocetes complex) in order to test competing hypotheses of concerted versus independent responses of codistributed forms to past climatic fluctuations. Qualitatively, there were strong similarities in the phylogeographic patterns of the two groups, yet there were also areas of incongruence. Likelihood-ratio tests (Kishino-Hasegawa-Templeton and parametric bootstrap tests) indicated that …

Dijet production has been studied in neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering for 470 < Q2 < 20000 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.4 pb-1. Dijet differential cross sections are presented in a kinematic region where both theoretical and experimental uncertainties are small. Next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculations describe the measured differential cross sections well. A QCD analysis of the measured dijet fraction as a function of Q2 allows both a precise determination of αs(Mz) and a test of the energy-scale dependence of the strong coupling constant. A detailed analysis provides an improved estimate of the uncertainties of the NLO QCD cross sections arising from the paxton distribution functions of the proton. The value of αs(Mz), as determined from the QCD fit, is αs (MZ) = 0.1166 ± 0.0019(stat.)+0.0024-0.0044 (exp.) +0.00570.0044(th.). © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
Parenting Stress In Families With Children With Disabilities, Timothy B. Smith, Matthew N. I. Oliver, Mark S. Innocenti
Parenting Stress In Families With Children With Disabilities, Timothy B. Smith, Matthew N. I. Oliver, Mark S. Innocenti
Faculty Publications
Parenting stress is an important variable to consider in families with children with disabilities. This study evaluated 880 such families, using measures of child and family functioning. Results suggest that factors such as income, time available for interaction with the child, and social support predict parenting stress much better than do aspects of child functioning.

An analysis of 8 Alu insertion loci (ACE, TPA25, PV92, APO, FXIIIB, D1, A25, B65) has been carried out in six populations from the Caucasus, including Indo-European-speaking Armenians; Altaic-speaking Azerbaijanians; North Caucasian-speaking Cherkessians, Darginians, and Ingushians; and South Caucasian (Kartvelian)-speaking Georgians. The Caucasus populations exhibit low levels of within-population variation and high levels of between-population differentiation, with the average Fst value for the Caucasus of 0.113, which is almost as large as the Fst value of 0.157 for worldwide populations. Maximum likelihood tree and principal coordinate analyses both group the Caucasus populations with European populations. Neither geographic nor linguistic relationships …
The Uniform Health-Care Decisions Act And Its Progress In The States, David M. English
The Uniform Health-Care Decisions Act And Its Progress In The States, David M. English
Faculty Publications
Over the past decade, planning for health care decision making through the making of an advance directive has become a routine part of personal counseling. Public interest in the subject has been fueled by well-publicized cases such as Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health, 497 U.S. 261 (1990). In response to this interest, most states authorize their citizens to make at least one form of advance directive: all states statutorily authorize powers of attorney for health care, and all but Massachusetts, Michigan and New York authorize living wills. State legislation has been a mixed blessing. Although intended to facilitate …
Of Manatees, Mangroves, And The Mississippi River: Is There An Estuarine Signature For The Gulf Of Mexico?, R. Eugene Turner
Of Manatees, Mangroves, And The Mississippi River: Is There An Estuarine Signature For The Gulf Of Mexico?, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Important parameters of estuarine variability include morphology, flushing times, nutrient loading rates, and wetland: water ratios. This variability both reflects and disguises underlying relationships between the physics and biology of estuaries, which this comparative analysis seeks to reveal, using the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) estuaries as a starting point. A question used to focus this analysis is: are the GOM estuaries unique? The GOM receives the Mississippi River, a uniquely large, world-class river, which dominates the freshwater and nutrient inflows to the GOM continental shelf, whose margins include 35 major estuarine systems. These GOM estuaries have 28% and 41% of …

Quiet Rebellion? Explaining Nearly A Decade Of Declining Federal Drug Sentences With Michael Heise, Frank O. Bowman Iii, Michael Heise
Faculty Publications
The Article begins with an examination of three primarily empirical questions. First, is the trend real? In other words, is the apparent decrease in federal drug sentences merely a species of statistical hiccup, a random fluctuation that could move easily and rapidly in the other direction? Or is the decline in average drug sentences large enough, and the trend prolonged enough, that we can safely conclude that something meaningful is occurring?
Crumbs For Oliver Twist: Resolving The Conflict Between Tax And Support Claims In Bankruptcy, Michelle A. Cecil
Crumbs For Oliver Twist: Resolving The Conflict Between Tax And Support Claims In Bankruptcy, Michelle A. Cecil
Faculty Publications
This article is premised on the assumption that the congressional goal of preferring support claims over federal income tax claims is indeed a laudable one, based on three interrelated policy justifications. First, support claimants are unable to spread their risk of loss like the government is able to do by raising tax rates or increasing tax revenue from other sources. As three prominent bankruptcy scholars noted in their recent study of consumer bankruptcy entitled The Fragile Middle Class: Americans in Debt:
