Products Liability--The Meaning Of Defect, David A. Fischer
Products Liability--The Meaning Of Defect, David A. Fischer
Faculty Publications
In the products liability area the pendulum has now swung back to the imposition of strict liability. This transition, beginning with the elimination of the privity requirement in negligence actions, continuing with the imposition of strict liability under a warranty theory, and culminating in the development of a tort theory of recovery in strict liability, has been well-documented.

Bibliography Of Occupational Information, Janice Wieckhorst
Bibliography Of Occupational Information, Janice Wieckhorst
Faculty Publications
This bibliography (non-annotated) is divided into three major sections. The first covers books; periodicals and pamphlets describing individual careers; job hunting techniques and the world of work. The second section contains a selected listing of U. S. government publications on employment and careers. The final section includes a group of reference materials pertinent to employment. While this bibliography is specific to the library at the University of Northern Iowa; its citations cover recognized materials generally available through reference libraries and the U. S. Government. (CKJ)
Kibigaku: An Analysis Of A Modern Japanese Ritual Music, Larry V. Shumway
Kibigaku: An Analysis Of A Modern Japanese Ritual Music, Larry V. Shumway
Faculty Publications
Kibigaku is the name given to a musical tradition which arose in western Japan during the early years of the Meiji period (1867-1912). It was created by a Gagaku musician of the recently abolished Ikeda fief at Okayama, Yoshihide Kishimoto, who sought to blend elements of the Imperial Court music with those of more popular genres to create a new form of music which would be appropriate for a modernized Japan. Inherent in his thinking was the idea that while Gagaku was the only music having the power to fully evoke and express the Japanese spirit, it was too austere …

Proposal: Pioneer Venus Orbiter Mission Magnetic Field Investigation, Edward J. Smith, Leverett Davis Jr., Douglas E. Jones, Bruce T. Tsurutani
Faculty Publications
The magnetic field investigation on the Venus Orbiter Mission must provide sensitive, accurate measurements of the magnetic field at all locations along the spacecraft orbit. In addition to being able to search for and measure any weak global magnetic field that may exist, the magnetometer must have the capability of measuring fields at frequencies high enough to permit a comprehensive study of the bow shock, the region between the shock and the ionopause, the expansion fan and the wake. Accurate measurements outside the interaction region must be made in order to provide necessary information concerning the configuration of the perturbing …

Rotationally Inelastic Molecular Scattering. Computational Tests Of Some Simple Solutions Of The Strong Coupling Problem, Thomas P. Tsien, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack
Faculty Publications
Partial cross sections (opacity functions) for rotational transitions in atom-diatom collisions are computed in the infinite-order sudden (IOS) approximation and compared with accurate close-coupling (CC) calculations. Agreement is good in the dominant coupling (small total angular momentum J) region. Simple methods for calculating integral inelastic cross sections are discussed, and it is found that accurate cross sections can often be computed very simply, even when large numbers of channels are coupled together, by using IOS or first-order sudden (FOS) approximations for small J and CC or exponential Born (EBDW) methods for large J.

A Model Of Criminal Dispositions: An Alternative To Official Discretion In Sentencing, Larry I. Palmer
A Model Of Criminal Dispositions: An Alternative To Official Discretion In Sentencing, Larry I. Palmer
Faculty Publications
Professor Palmer proposes a new model of criminal dispositions which would replace official discretion at sentencing with judicially created standards for sentencing officials. In Part I he outlines the role of the appellate judiciary in developing an interest analysis to enunciate standards to guide criminal dispositions. In Parts Il and III he examines the roles of administrative agencies and legislatures in perfecting the dispositional process under standards initially ariculated by the judiciary. Professor Palmer emphasizes the concept of individual liberty as a central value of society and shows how a new system of criminal dispositions can enhance that value as …

It is useful in optically driven Kerr-cell shutters and other laser applications to have intense pulses with extremely low light levels between pulses. We describe here a device that accomplishes this objective external to the laser cavity.

The Mysteries Of God, Noel B. Reynolds
The Mysteries Of God, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
LDS discourse commonly uses the term mysteries to refer to truths that we don’t know or shouldn’t worry about. But the scriptures—and particularly the Book of Mormon—speak of the mysteries very positively, as something we should seek to know. The scriptural terminology appears to refer to the things of God that the faithful come to know—things that nonbelievers never understand.
