Computer Model Of A Fast Toroidal Plasma Compression, With Application To The Topolotron, H. Mark Nelson, Keith H. Brown, Charles A. Hart Nov 1976

Computer Model Of A Fast Toroidal Plasma Compression, With Application To The Topolotron, H. Mark Nelson, Keith H. Brown, Charles A. Hart

Faculty Publications

The method is developed for a comuputer sequence which models a fast toroidal theta or screw pinch for a highly conducting axially symmetric plasma. The computer sequence takes into account the self-inductances of the plasma and the external conductors which drive the compression as well as the mutual inductance which electromagnetically couples the two. The computer sequence is divided into three phases: a snowplow compression phase, an adiabatic compression phase, and a crowbarred circuit phase. The computer sequence is applied to a topolotron and an example is given of a magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium geometry for which the plasma surface possesses an …

Behavior Of A Manganin Coil At Elevated Temperatures And Pressures, Jonathan D. Weiss, Daniel L. Decker, H. B. Vanfleet Sep 1976

Behavior Of A Manganin Coil At Elevated Temperatures And Pressures, Jonathan D. Weiss, Daniel L. Decker, H. B. Vanfleet

Faculty Publications

We have determined the temperature dependence in the first-order pressure coefficient of a manganin coil to be dBetaB/dT= (4.2±0.8) ×10^-7 (kbar degrees C)^-1 in the equation R (T,P) =R (T,0)(1+BetaP+GammaP2), where R (T,P) is the coil resistance at temperature T and pressure P. The measurements were performed by simultaneously measuring the coil resistance and temperature at the transitions of mercury and bismuth, which were observed by differential thermal analysis.

The Topolotron: A High Beta Device With Topological Stability, Keith H. Brown, H. R. P. Ferguson, J. H. Gardner, Larry V. Knight, H. Mark Nelson Sep 1976

The Topolotron: A High Beta Device With Topological Stability, Keith H. Brown, H. R. P. Ferguson, J. H. Gardner, Larry V. Knight, H. Mark Nelson

Faculty Publications

The concept of topological or structural stability is introduced and its importance in the magnetic confinement of plasmas is discussed. Topological stability requires the presence of a pair of limit cycles in the magnetic field configuration. This paper deals with the design of an experimental device possessing limit cycles. The design includes a high beta (b=1), high density (10^16), hot (100 eV) hydrogen plasma which is to be compressed by a factor of about 5 in a torodial device of 25 cm average major radius with a capacitor bank rise time of less than 2 µsec. Two shaped toroidal coils …

Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg Aug 1976

Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg

Faculty Publications

Two free radicals formed when single crystals of potassium hydroxylamine disulfonate are irradiated with gamma rays at 77degrees K were studied by ESR. The ESR spectra result from a predominant center (radical A) exhibiting large 14N and 1H hyperfine splittings and from lesser amounts of Fremy's radical [O-dotN(SO3)2-2]. The g and hyperfine tensors of these radicals have been evaluated and are discussed. Radical A, whose identity remains in doubt, may be regarded as the precursor to Fremy's radical; on warming its lines decay and those of Fremy's radical are formed. Lines from radical A decrease in strength and those of …

A Study Of Re-Writing In The Poetry Of Arthur Hugh Clough, Patrick G. Scott Jul 1976

A Study Of Re-Writing In The Poetry Of Arthur Hugh Clough, Patrick G. Scott

Faculty Publications

A 365-page study of how the Victorian poet Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861) created the distinctive self-conscious voice and multiple ironies of his poetry, with eight chapters providing (1), p. 1, an introduction arguing that the apparent problem of unfinishedness in much of his best poetry is closely linked to his creativity, followed by detailed accounts of his writing process in (2), p. 26, his early poetry at Rugby school; (3), p. 49, his shorter poetry written as a student and teacher in Oxford, including the poems collected in the volume Ambarvalia [1849]; (4), p. 101, his unfinished poem on the …

Van Der Waals Interactions Of Carbon Monoxide, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack Mar 1976

Van Der Waals Interactions Of Carbon Monoxide, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

Pade approximant methods and experimental frequency dependent polarizabilities are used to calculate reliable van der Waals C6 coefficients for the interaction of CO with He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, H2, N2, O2, CO2, and CO. Error bounds are given for the C6 coefficients and for the CO oscillator strength sums.

Van Der Waals Interactions Of Ii-State Linear Molecules With Atoms. C6 For No(X 2Π) Interactions, Glen C. Nielson, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

Formulas are derived for the van der Waals Cn coefficients for the interaction of a diatomic molecule in a II electronic state with an S-state atom. Two triatomic states arise from the degenerate IIstate. The average of the two energies has the usual Legendre polynomial (PL) angular dependence, but the difference in energies of the two states is shown to have associated Legendre polynomial (PML with M=2) angular dependence. Procedures for including spin orbit coupling are included, and the extension to interactions of Delta- and Phi-state molecules is discussed. Values of the spherical part of the C6 coefficients for the …

It is argued that conflicting approximations in a recent paper [J. R. Stallcop, J. Chem. Phys. 61, 5085 (1974)] render the resulting theory invalid.

The New York Law Of Intestate Succession Compared With The Uniform Probate Code: Where There's No Will There's A Way, Julian R. Kossow

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this Article is to analyze, compare, and contrast New York’s law of intestacy with that of the Uniform Probate Code (Code). The Article may serve as a basis for estimating the impact on existing concepts of descent and distribution should New York adopt the Code. It addresses itself to the law of intestate succession, delves into present New York law on the subject, examines corresponding sections of the Code, analyzes the differences, and arrives at an evaluation of the benefits and detriments that adoption of the Code would bring. The final analysis reveals that, on balance, the …

There's Nothing New Under The Sun, Geraldine E. Larocque

Faculty Publications

The attempt to unite theory and practice in the education of English teachers has taken many forms: courses in which theoreticians attempt to illuminate the practice of professional teachers or student teachers; situations in which teacher-education faculty cooperate with teachers; student teachers; and the community; in order to make programs more responsive to community needs; and instruction in which school-based apprenticeship is stressed. Until research can provide a firm base for the structure and content of methods courses; professionals must rely on their own judgment as to the placement of emphasis. An adaptation of Lee J. Cronbach's research paradigm; used …

Cirques As Glacier Locations, William L. Graf Jan 1976

Cirques As Glacier Locations, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

A comparison between the 319 cirques that contain glaciers and a sample of 240 empty cirques in the Rocky Mountains shows that in the present climatic situation, landforms are strong factors in determining the locations of glaciers. An optimum glacier location is a large cirque facing northeast, with a planimetric shape of width greater than length, high steep walls, a pass located to the windward, and a peak to the southwest. Glaciers survive in the present climatic conditions because of a geomorphic feedback system, whereby glaciers are protected by cirque forms that owe their morphology to glacial processes.
