Objective: To determine the influence of environmental factors on resting energy expenditure (REE) and its relationship to adiposity in two populations of West African origin, Nigerians and U.S. blacks. Research Methods and Procedures: REE and body composition were measured in a cross-sectional sample of 89 Nigerian adults (39 women and 50 men), and 181 U.S. black adults (117 women and 65 men). Both groups represent randomly selected population samples. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry after an overnight fast in both sites using the same instrument. Identities And Racial Attitudes Of South African And American Adolescents: A Cross-Cultural Examination, Timothy B. Smith, Christopher R. Stones

Issues of group identity and prejudice have played a large role in the history of South Africa. This study examined differences among Xhosa-speaking Black, so-called Coloured, English-speaking White, and Afrikaans-speaking White adolescents within a context of social change. Data was collected from 818 high school students using a questionnaire that assessed aspects of these groups' perceptions of themselves (their identities), attitudes toward other racial groups (their prejudices), and beliefs about changes in the socio-political environment. Several statistically significant differences between the groups were found. Research in world English literatures has concentrated on qualitative measures of analysis in order to understand what is meant by `bilingual creativity.' These measures demonstrate that there are differences in rhetorical and literary style within world English literatures both in the inner and outer circle. Using Biber's multidimensional analysis (1988) to examine a large corpus of world English literatures written in Indian, West African, Britain, Anglo-American and Mexican American varieties of English, this paper examines whether quantitative analyses can also be insightful and useful in the examination of world English literatures in expanding our understanding of what `bilingual creativity' entails. …

For a conference discussion of textual bibliographers and rare book librarians on the topic "Who needs textual studies?," this paper examines three different appearances of Alfred Tennyson's poem "Crossing the Bar": (1) a manuscript facsimile, (ii) its reuse as a hymn and in a giftbook; and (iii) the paperback Armed Services Edition distributed to US troops overseas during World War II, and argues that with the shift from literary studies to cultural studies such later "unauthoritative texts" have a new importance for scholars and students, and deserve increased attention from bibliographers, collectors, and rare book librarians. Methanol Promotes Atmospheric Methane Oxidation By Methanotrophic Cultures And Soils?, J. Benstead, G. M. King, H. G. Williams

Two methanotrophic bacteria, Methylobacter albus BG8 and Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, oxidized atmospheric methane during batch growth on methanol. Methane consumption was rapidly and substantially diminished (95% over 9 days) when washed cell suspensions were incubated without methanol in the presence of atmospheric methane (1.7 ppm). Methanotrophic activity was stimulated after methanol (10 mM) but not methane (1,000 ppm) addition. M. albus BG8 grown in continuous culture for 80 days with methanol retained the ability to oxidize atmospheric methane and oxidized methane in a chemostat air supply. Methane oxidation during growth on methanol was not affected by methane deprivation. Differences in …

The most important inorganic nitrogen transformations (nitrification, denitrification and N fixation) and DIN fluxes in darkened and inundated sediments were studied during the dry season in the Ao Nam Bor mangrove forest at the island of Phuket, Thailand. Dark fluxes of NH4+ were low (not significantly different from zero) and tended to be directed into the sediment in the area vegetated by the tree Rhizophora apiculata (204 μmol m-2 d-1) and out of the sediment in an adjacent unvegetated area (80 μmol m-2 d-1), NO3- appeared to be taken up by the sediment in both areas, although at rates not …

It is widely recognized that the bacteria sequestered in a biofilm on a medical implant are much more resistant to antibiotics than their planktonic counterparts. Recent studies have shown that application of antibiotic along with low power ultrasound significantly increases the killing of planktonic bacteria by the antibiotic. Herein is reported a similar application of antibiotic and ultrasound to sessile bacteria in biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on a polyethylene substrate. Biofilm viability was measured after exposure to 12 μg/ml gentamicin sulfate and 10 mW/cm2 ultrasound at frequencies of 70 kHz, 500 kHz, 2.25 MHz, and 10 MHz. The results …

This paper has both an ultimate purpose and immediate goal. The ultimate purpose is implied in a call for rethinking the focus of the study for public service ethics. Put briefly, we need to shift our attention from developing a normative theory of public administrative ethics to the goal of establishing an ethical theory of public administrative behaviour. That proposal is the focus of the next section. The immediate objective is to offer a contribution to such an ethical theory. The potential of adenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP), cytidine 5′-monophosphate (CMP), 16S ribosomal RNA, and a protein (bovine serum albumin) to serve as substrates for bacterial urea production was evaluated in a defaunated, anoxic marine sediment. AMP, CMP and RNA stimulated urea production and urea turnover, but CMP to a lesser degree than AMP and RNA. The increase in urea production and turnover rates took place immediately after AMP, CMP, and RNA were added to the sediment. The rapid response in urea production and turnover rates suggests that the necessary uptake mechanisms and enzymes to utilize the substrates were present constitutively. Addition …

Aluminum (Al) has been suggested to be an important stress factor in forest decline due to its mobilization in soil following atmospheric deposition of acidic pollutants. A major goal of our research is to develop physiological and biochemical markers of stress in trees using cell cultures and whole plants. Needles of red spruce (Picea rubens) collected from several sites in the northeastern United States and red spruce cells grown in suspension cultures were examined for polyamine and inorganic-ion content. The cells in culture were exposed to various concentrations of Al for different lengths of time. Exposure to Al increased putrescine …

To examine the effect of the mission experience upon attitudes towards members of different cultures, 273 recently returned LDS missionaries and 493 LDS college students who had not yet served missions were administered measures of racial attitudes. Subsequently, the highest and lowest fifth of missionaries who had served in non-English speaking nations were interviewed. Results indicated that the missionaries did differ from the non-missionary sample in their racial attitudes and that several key qualitative pre-mission and mission experiences distinguished between the two groups interviewed. Modernization Theory Revisited: A Cross-Cultural Study Of Adolescent Conformity To Significant Others In Mainland China, Taiwan, And The U.S.A., Jie Zhang, Darwin L. Thomas

This paper examines modernization theory's explanation of adolescent conformity behavior to determine patterns in three different cultural settings. Questionnaire survey data were collected from college students in mainland China, Taiwan, and the U.S. LISREL models were used to analyze the data. It was found that modernization theory was not well supported by the data. Analysis of the findings suggested that modernization theory test with cross-cultural data should take into consideration cultural characteristics, since much of human behavior is culturally determined. Application Of A Tetrazolium Salt With A Water-Soluble Formazan As An Indicator Of Viability In Respiring Bacteria, P. Roslev, G. M. King

The tetrazolium salt sodium 3'-{1-[(phenylamino)-carbonyl]-3,4- tetrazolium}-bis (4-methoxy-6-nitro)benzene-sulfonic acid hydrate (XTT) was examined for use as a colorimetric indicator of viability in respiring bacteria. XTT was reduced to an orange, water-soluble formazan product by Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, Pseudomonas putida, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis. Formazan production was proportional to live cell biomass, and XTT was reduced by all cultures in the absence of added electron-coupling agents. XTT reduction by M. trichosporium OB3b was linear over several hours and was stimulated by the presence of an exogenous substrate (methanol). Addition of cyanide to cultures incubated under oxic conditions gave an initial 10-fold …

Although wife abuse is common in Iran, it is a subject which has received almost no attention from scholars and little has been written on it. The purpose of this article is to examine the problem, to show the connection between wife-beating and the Iranian political system, and to raise questions for further research. The data on which this analysis is based come from my own research as well as from published sources. bovine embryos derived from in vitro fertilization procedures were cocultured in vitro with oviductal cells obtained from heifers between d 4 and 6 or d 14 and 16 of the estrous cycle. In addition, proteins secreted by oviductal cells isolated between d 4 and 6 or d 14 and 16 of the cycle were monitored. Embryos (2- to 4-cell) were incubated in Tissue Culture Medium-199 with 10% fetal bovine serum with or without oviductal cells at 39°C for 10 d following in vitro insemination. Although sociologists and economists have been widely concerned with parental investment in children, that investment has rarely been examined directly. The Parent Survey of the High School and Beyond data set provides material for examining the traits of parents and children that shape parental payment for higher education. Parents' reported willingness and ability to pay, along with savings for children's future education, are shaped first by total income and the number of children who must share that income. Moreover, parental investment in higher education is increased when the parents themselves received parental financial support, which suggests continuity over generations. Gender …

A subcutaneous extraskeletal giant cell tumor (malignant fibrous histiocytoma) was excised repeatedly from a 9-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat. Ultrastructurally, the mass was composed of fibroblast-like, histiocyte-like, and multinucleated giant cells, and some undifferentiated cells and mononuclear cells intermediate between the fibroblast-like and histiocyte-like cells. Fibroblast-like cells were characterized by abundant well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, relatively smooth cytoplasmic membranes, few lysosomal structures, and finely granular chromatin. Histiocyte-like cells resembled immature macrophages. The cell membranes had many villous projections. Rough endoplasmic reticulum varied in quantity. Lysosomes were numerous. Multinucleated giant cells had characteristics of both the fibroblast-like and histiocyte-like cells. No viral …

Naturally Occurring Sendai Virus Infection Of Athymic Nude Mice, J. M. Ward, D. P. Houchens, M. J. Collins, D. M. Young, R. L. Reagan

Nude (nu/nu) mice, Balb/c derived, responded to a naturally occurring Sendai virus infection in a different manner than conventional mice. They developed a chronic debilitating disease and a persistent viral infection of the respiratory tract with intranuclear inclusion bodies in tracheal, bronchial and bronchiolar epithelial cells, laryngeal and tracheal glandular epithelium and in type I and II alveolar cells. The infection was identified by serologic and tissue culture studies, the mouse antibody production test and ultrastructural examination of pulmonary lesions. Phlebitis of pulmonary veins, suppurative rhinitis and otitis media accompanied the viral infection while some mice developed a secondary bronchopneumonia.

Foreign Studies; an elective course for junior and senior students; is a study of selected Asian cultures; including the nations of China; Japan; and India; and of African cultures; including the nations of Nigeria; Ethiopia; and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Asia and Africa are studied from the American cultural viewpoint with emphasis upon the three concepts of culture; ideology; and the comparison of traditional and modern society.
