The Upholstered, Wood Household Furniture Industry In North America: A Spatial Equilibrium Analysis, Eric J. Todd, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1991

The Upholstered, Wood Household Furniture Industry In North America: A Spatial Equilibrium Analysis, Eric J. Todd, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Upholstered, wood household furniture production has become an increasingly important part of total furniture production in the United States. From 1982 to 1987, employment in the upholstered furniture industry grew 16 percent, and in 1987, the industry's 82,100 employees represented about 30 percent of U.S. household furniture indush-y employment (USDC Bureau of the Census 1990). Over the same 5-year period, value added for the upholstered furniture industry increased by 52 percent to more than $2.6 billion.

The Oregon Medicaid Program: Is It Just?, Maxwell J. Mehlman Jan 1991

The Oregon Medicaid Program: Is It Just?, Maxwell J. Mehlman

Faculty Publications

While the objective of expanding the Oregon Medicaid program is commendable, the means adopted by the Oregon legislature to control the costs of the expansion are problematic. This paper examines the legislature's approach from a legal perspective. The first part of the paper determines whether it is consistent with federal and state law governing the Medicaid program. Oregon is seeking waivers from any conflicting federal requirements, and since there do not appear to be any constitutional impediments, the key question is whether the waivers should be granted as a matter of sound public policy. The second and third parts of …

Identification Of The Intermediate Allosteric Species In Human Hemoglobin Reveals A Molecular Code For Cooperative Switching, Margaret A. Daugherty, Madeline A. Shea, Jeremy A. Johnson, Vince J. Licata, George J. Turner, Gary K. Ackers Jan 1991

Identification Of The Intermediate Allosteric Species In Human Hemoglobin Reveals A Molecular Code For Cooperative Switching, Margaret A. Daugherty, Madeline A. Shea, Jeremy A. Johnson, Vince J. Licata, George J. Turner, Gary K. Ackers

Faculty Publications

The 10 ligation species of human cyanomethemoglobin were previously found to distribute into three discrete cooperative free energy levels according to a combinatorial code (i.e., dependent on both the number and configuration of ligated subunits). Analysis of this distribution showed that the hemoglobin tetramer occupies a third allosteric state in addition to those of the unligated (T) and fully ligated (R) species. To determine the nature of the intermediate allosteric state, we have studied the effects of pH, temperature, and single-site mutations on its free energy of quaternary assembly, in parallel with corresponding data on the deoxy (T) and fully …

Comparison Of The Nucleotide And Deduced Amino Acid Sequences Of The S Genes Specified By Virulent And Avirulent Strains Of Bovine Coronaviruses, Xuming Zhang, Konstantin G. Kousoulas, Johannes Storz Jan 1991

Comparison Of The Nucleotide And Deduced Amino Acid Sequences Of The S Genes Specified By Virulent And Avirulent Strains Of Bovine Coronaviruses, Xuming Zhang, Konstantin G. Kousoulas, Johannes Storz

Faculty Publications

The entire nucleotide sequences of the spike glycoprotein (S) genes of the highly virulent bovine coronavirus (BCV) strain BCV-LY138, the avirulent BCV-L9 and related Norden Vaccine (BCV-Vaccine) strains were determined using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify cDNAs obtained by reverse transcription of viral RNA, and to produce single strand cDNAs for DNA sequencing. The S gene sequences of these viral strains were compared with those of recently published strains BCV-Mebus, BCV-Quebec, and BCV-F15. An open reading frame of 4092 nucleotides, encoding a protein of 1363 amino acid residues, was found in all six strains. Frameshifts and insertions or …

Comparison Of Bovine Coronavirus (Bcv) Antigens: Monoclonal Antibodies To The Spike Glycoprotein Distinguish Between Vaccine And Wild-Type Strains, Khalid A. Hussain, Johannes Storz, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Jan 1991

Comparison Of Bovine Coronavirus (Bcv) Antigens: Monoclonal Antibodies To The Spike Glycoprotein Distinguish Between Vaccine And Wild-Type Strains, Khalid A. Hussain, Johannes Storz, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against two major structural proteins of the cell-adapted Mebus strain of bovine coronavirus (BCV-L9) were produced and characterized. Seven MAbs reacted with the peplomeric glycoprotein, gp100/S, while three MAbs reacted with the nucleoprotein p53/N in Western blot analysis of BCV polypeptides. MAbs to gp100/S reacted with discontinuous epitopes of gp100/S in Westerns under mild but not under standard denaturing conditions. In contrast, MAbs to p53/N reacted in both types of Westerns, and those epitopes were thus continuous. MAbs to p53/N failed to neutralize BCV infectivity, while 4 MAbs to gp100/S neutralized BCV effectively. Cross reactivity of MAbs …

Simplified Procedure For The Isolation Of Intact Chloroplasts From Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Sharon Matthews, Terry M. Bricker, James V. Moroney Jan 1991

Simplified Procedure For The Isolation Of Intact Chloroplasts From Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Sharon Matthews, Terry M. Bricker, James V. Moroney

Faculty Publications

A simple procedure that yields highly purified intact chloroplasts from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is described. This procedure involves breakage of cell wall-deficient cells by passing them through a narrow bore syringe needle. The intact chloroplasts are then purified from the crude homogenate by differential centrifugation and Percoll gradient centrifugation. This procedure generates relatively high yields of chloroplasts capable of CO2 fixation. These chloroplasts were characterized by electron microscopy, marker enzyme analysis, and ferricyanide exclusion. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that these chloroplasts retain their pyrenoids and eyespots. Scanning electron microscopy confirms that the characteristic cup shape of C. reinhardtii chloroplasts persists in …

Some Extremal Connectivity Results For Matroids, Safwan Akkari, James Oxley Jan 1991

Some Extremal Connectivity Results For Matroids, Safwan Akkari, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let n be an integer exceeding one and M be a matroid having at least n + 2 elements. In this paper, we prove that every n-element subset X of E(M) is in an (n + 1)-element circuit if and only if (i) for every such subset, M X is disconnected, and (ii) for every subset Y with at most n elements, M Y is connected. Various extensions and consequences of this result are also derived including characterizations in terms of connectivity of the 4-point line and of Murty's Sylvester matroids. The former is a result of Seymour. © 1991.

Evaluating Acrosome Interference Contrast Reaction Steps With Brightfield And Differential Microscopy Techniques, H. C. Steinholt, J. E. Chandler, V. Tirado

Faculty Publications

Acrosomal integrity of bovine spermatozoa was evaluated using naphthol yellow S-erythrosine B stain with bright field microscopy, .2% glutaraldehyde fixation with Nomarski optics, and live wet smears with Nomarski optics to compare the evaluation techniques. Four ejaculates per two Holstein bulls were enriched through a Percoll gradient, capacitated with heparin, and acrosome-reacted with lysophosphatidylcholine to prepare spermatozoa for in vitro fertilization. Spermatozoa samples were taken after each preparatory step, and percentage of intact acrosomes was evaluated with the stain, .2% glutaraldehyde, and live wet smear. Acrosomal integrity decreased with each preparatory step across all techniques. The decrease in integrity from …

A Mathematical Model Of A Sealed Nickel-Cadmium Battery, Deyuan Fan, Ralph E. White Jan 1991

A Mathematical Model Of A Sealed Nickel-Cadmium Battery, Deyuan Fan, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model for the charge and discharge of a sealed nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery is presented. The model is used to study the effect of transport properties of the electrolyte and kinetic parameters of the electrode reactions on the cell performance during the charge and discharge period. The model can also be used to demonstrate the changes of cell performance during cycling. Some comparisons between model predictions and experimental results indicate that the model predictions appear to fit the experimental data well. Sensitivity analyses illustrate that the sealed nickel-cadmium battery operates under activation control. It is also shown theoretically that …

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ As Taught By The Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 1991

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ As Taught By The Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Three definitional passages in the Book of Mormon define the gospel or doctrine of Christ precisely as the way or means by which an individual can come to Christ and be saved. Jesus Christ is quoted in all three passages teaching a six-part formula: All men and women who will (1) believe or trust in him, (2) repent of all their sins, and (3) witness to the Father that they have so repented and taken his name upon them, will (4) receive a remission of sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost, which will guide and sustain them as …

Among the nearly 100 topics covered are the following: itinerary; airport check-in; menus; post office; insurance; …

A Modified Electrochemical Process For The Decomposition Of Hydrogen Sulfide In An Aqueous Alkaline Solution, Z. Mao, A. Anani, Ralph E. White, S. Srinivasan, A. J. Appleby Jan 1991

A Modified Electrochemical Process For The Decomposition Of Hydrogen Sulfide In An Aqueous Alkaline Solution, Z. Mao, A. Anani, Ralph E. White, S. Srinivasan, A. J. Appleby

Faculty Publications

An electrochemical process for the decomposition of hydrogen sulfide into its constituents in an aqueous alkaline solution is presented. It essentially consists of presaturation of an alkaline scrubber solution with H2S. Thereafter, partial neutralization of the presaturated solution provides not only the necessary mass balance for electrolysis, but also creates the optimum conditions under which passivation of the anode, as well as side chemical and electrochemical reactions, are minimized. Finally, the electrolysis stage of the process leads to precipitation of crystalline sulfur at the anode and evolution of hydrogen at the cathode. Regeneration of the alkaline solution via …

Institutional Investors And The New Corporate Governance, Jayne W. Barnard Jan 1991

Institutional Investors And The New Corporate Governance, Jayne W. Barnard

Faculty Publications

During the last decade, American capital markets have experienced a marked shift from a constituency made up primarily of household investors to one made up primarily of institutional investors. Institutional investors are fiduciary bodies such as pension funds, mutual funds, and employee stock ownership plans, representing large numbers of beneficiaries. As collective entitites, institutional investors often amass billions of dollars in assets, thus giving them the potential for substantial influence on the companies in which they invest. In recent years, some institutional investors have sought to use this influence to challenge traditional patterns of corporate governance, claiming that new patterns …
