Hardware Handshake: Listserv Forms Backbone Of National Free Radio Network, Ted M. Coopman
Faculty Publications
During the spring and summer of 1999, the Low Power Radio Service Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) recently drew a record number of responses. Several thousand people from all over the country participated in what has traditionally been the purview of major corporations and institutions, including 1120 individuals who signed the Micro Radio Empowerment Coalition comments. This paper examines that response and its implications for the micro radio and other activist movements. The Internet played an important role not only in filing responses, but in drafting and signing responses as well. For example, the …

Alcohol, Tobacco, And Pharmaceutical Industry Funding: Considerations For Organizations Serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Communities, Laurie A. Drabble
Faculty Publications
Emerging research suggests that alcohol, tobacco and drug-related problems may be higher in lesbian and gay communities than in the population as a whole. At the same time, alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries have increased marketing strategies that are targeted specifically to lesbian and gay communities. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and HTV/AIDS organizations, often marginalized and under-funded, have frequently faced significant challenges in funding programs and special events. These organizations are often the very same groups needed to promote and support effective substance abuse countermeasures in LGBT communities. Agency leaders, community members, and substance abuse prevention advocates all …
Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage
Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage
Faculty Publications
This article reports on the effects of infusing a 20-hour per semester service-learning requirement into a large Introductory Child Development course. Analyses of student outcomes on course assignments revealed that the 166 students in the service-learning cohorts (2 classes) out-performed the 309 students who took the course during the three semesters prior to the introduction of the service-learning requirement. The advantage for the service-learning students appeared to stem primarily from stronger performance on narrative assessments (midterm and take-home final essays), and appeared to manifest itself only later in the semester. Analyses of students’ journals confirmed that students reflected thoughtfully about …
Palladium-Catalyzed Carboxylative Coupling Of Allylstannanes And Allyl Halides, Russell J. Franks
Palladium-Catalyzed Carboxylative Coupling Of Allylstannanes And Allyl Halides, Russell J. Franks
Faculty Publications
A three-component carboxylative coupling between allyl halides, allylstannanes, and CO2 to produce allyl esters is catalyzed by Pd and Pt phosphine complexes. Allyl chloride and allyltributylstannane are thus converted to propenyl butenoate in excellent yield. Cross coupling of two different allyl components produces a nearly statistical mixture of all four possible esters. Tentative mechanistic pathways for the catalytic reaction are proposed.

Financial Returns On Timberlands In Mississippi Between 1977 And 1999, Andrew J. Hartsell, Steven H. Bullard
Financial Returns On Timberlands In Mississippi Between 1977 And 1999, Andrew J. Hartsell, Steven H. Bullard
Faculty Publications
The objective of this study is to compute the real annual rates of return from mature, undisturbed timberlands in Mississippi during a 17-year period (1977-1994). This was done using Southern Research Station, Forest Inventory and Analysis data on timber volumes and Timber Mart-South data on timber prices. Simple and adjusted financial maturity models were used to estimate rates of return. Average annual rates of change in value were computed and compared for four forest types across Mississippi. The average annual rate of change in volume was also computed for these stands and compared to the financial rates of return. Three …

Is There A Uniform Trust Act In Your Future, David M. English
Faculty Publications
The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) is close to completing the first comprehensive attempt at the national level to codify the law of trusts-the Uniform Trust Act (Act). This article describes the reasons for the Act and many of its provisions. The Act is scheduled for final reading and approval by NCCUSL during the summer of 2000, meaning that states may begin enacting the Act in its final form in their 2001 legislative sessions. This article is based on the draft discussed at NCCUSL's 1999 annual meeting.

The Timing Of Opinion Formation By Jurors In Civil Cases: An Empirical Examination, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Valerie P. Hans, Nicole L. Mott, G. Thomas Munsterman
Faculty Publications
Although researchers have thoroughly examined juror decision making in laboratory experiments, the point at which jurors form opinions in actual jury trials remains cloaked in mystery. Recently, however, that cloak was lifted enough to provide a glimpse at the timing of juror opinion formation. The opportunity to do so came in conjunction with an evaluation of a jury reform procedure implemented in Arizona civil trials in 1995. Data collected for the evaluation included the responses of 1,385 jurors from 172 civil trials concerning when they began to form opinions about the case, whether and when they changed their minds about …

Shapes Of Ministry In The New Testament, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Shapes Of Ministry In The New Testament, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Faculty Publications
The chapter evaluates an interpretation of the New Testament ministry that argues that there was no specific local church organization spelled out in the Bible. The absence of organizational structure allows for the ordination of women in the local church and presents Junia as the first female apostle and Phoebe as a female minister. The evaluation presents the biblical structure of leadership and shows that through incorrect interpretation of the texts this view distorts the biblical view of local church leadership.

The Effect Of The Auap Study Abroad Experience On The Students' Cultural Perceptions, K. James Hartshorn
Faculty Publications
As the Asia University America Program (AUAP) commences its second decade, those who have closely observed this unique study abroad experience are aware of a variety of ways the students seem to benefit from their participation. Some of these benefits are academic and can be seen in the development and improvement of specific language skills, gains in standardized test scores and earned university credit applied toward graduation. However, there seem to be a variety of other valuable benefits that may be a little more difficult to measure. such benefits could include the enlargement of the students' international perspective as world …

Functional Microanatomy Of The Feather-Bearing Integument: Implications For The Evolution Of Birds And Avian Flight, Dominique G. Homberger, Kumudini N.D.E. Silva
Faculty Publications
A selective regime favoring a streamlining of body contours and surfaces is proposed as having been instrumental in driving the morphological and functional transformations of an unfeathered reptilian integument into a featherbearing avian one. This hypothesis is consistent with a new, structurally and functionally coherent analysis of the microanatomy of the avian feather-bearing integument as a complex, integrated organ system that includes an intricate, hydraulic skeleto-muscular apparatus of the feathers, a dermo-subcutaneous muscle system of the integument, and a subcutaneous hydraulic skeletal system formed by fat bodies. Key elements of the evidence supporting the new hypothesis are (1) the presence …

T cell immunity to lytic proteins of herpesviruses is important in host control of infection. We have characterized the cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response to 5 human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) homologues of lytic proteins in HHV-8-seropositive individuals. HLA class I-restricted, CD8+ CTL responses to ≥1 HHV-8 lytic protein were detected in all 14 HHV-8-seropositive study subjects tested, with or without human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, but not in any of 5 HHV-8-seronegative individuals. Seven of these study subjects with both HHV-8 and HIV-1 infection had greater anti-CTL reactivity to glycoprotein H (open-reading frame 22) than did the 7 …

A multiplex amplification and detection platform for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium bovis and Brucella abortus infection simultaneously in bovine milk and nasal secretions was developed. This system (designated the bovine pathogen detection assay [BPDA]-PCR) consists of duplex amplification of species-specific targets (a region of the BCSP31K gene of B. abortus and a repeat-sequence region in the hsp65 gene of M. bovis, respectively). This is followed by a solid-phase probe capture hybridization of amplicons for detection. On the basis of spiking experiments with normal milk, the analytical sensitivity of the assay was 800 CFU equivalents/ml of milk for B. abortus and …
Toward More Sophisticated Mediation Theory, John M. Lande
Toward More Sophisticated Mediation Theory, John M. Lande
Faculty Publications
In the lead article in this symposium, Professor Jeffrey Stempel provides a very thoughtful analysis of the mediation field. He focuses on the debate over facilitative and evaluative mediation and he is critical of many of the arguments made by proponents of facilitative mediation. I have expressed some similar concerns, and I generally agree with his analysis (with a quibble here and there). I do think that the facilitation-evaluation debate has been productive (though admittedly wearisome), and that proponents of facilitative mediation deserve more credit than he gives them in his article.
Constitutional Gravity: A Unitary Theory Of Alternative Dispute Resolution And Public Civil Justice, Richard C. Reuben
Constitutional Gravity: A Unitary Theory Of Alternative Dispute Resolution And Public Civil Justice, Richard C. Reuben
Faculty Publications
Under the traditional bipolar model, civil dispute resolution is generally divided into two spheres: trial, which is public in nature and therefore subject to constitutional due process, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), which is private in nature and therefore not subject to such constraints. In this article, Professor Richard Reuben proposes a unitary understanding of public civil dispute resolution, one that recognizes that ADR is often energized by state action and thus is constitutionally required to comply with minimal but meaningful due process standards. Depending upon the process, such standards might include the right to an impartial forum, the right …
Parental Rights Termination Jurisprudence: Questioning The Framework, Jennifer Wriggins
Parental Rights Termination Jurisprudence: Questioning The Framework, Jennifer Wriggins
Faculty Publications
The article analyzes the Supreme Court’s decision in M.L.B. v. S.L.J., 519 U.S. 102 (1996), which held that where a state provides an appeal from a judgment terminating parental rights, it must, under the due process and equal protection clauses provide indigent appellants with a transcript if a transcript is necessary to review the decision. In doing so, it questions the framework used to analyze parental rights termination decisions. Specifically, it questions the sharp line drawn between cases concerning termination of parental rights (in which parents have certain constitutional protections) and cases concerning child custody (in which parents lack those …
Angle-Dependent Magnetothermal Conductivity In D-Wave Superconductors, I. Vekhter, P. J. Hirschfeld
Angle-Dependent Magnetothermal Conductivity In D-Wave Superconductors, I. Vekhter, P. J. Hirschfeld
Faculty Publications
We analyse the behavior of the thermal conductivity, κ(H), in the vortex state of a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor when both the heat current and the applied magnetic field are in the basal plane. At low temperature the effect of the field is accounted for in a semiclassical approximation, via a Doppler shift in the spectrum of the nodal quasiparticles. In that regime κ(H) exhibits twofold oscillations as a function of the angle between the direction of the field in the plane and the direction of the heat current, in agreement with experiment. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Objective: To determine the influence of environmental factors on resting energy expenditure (REE) and its relationship to adiposity in two populations of West African origin, Nigerians and U.S. blacks. Research Methods and Procedures: REE and body composition were measured in a cross-sectional sample of 89 Nigerian adults (39 women and 50 men), and 181 U.S. black adults (117 women and 65 men). Both groups represent randomly selected population samples. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry after an overnight fast in both sites using the same instrument. Body composition was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in 72 Nigerians and 156 …

Faculty Publications
Population-based candidate gene association analyses are becoming increasingly popular as a result of a greater number of genes and gene polymorphisms having been identified for which some functional information is available. Because many biochemical and physiologic systems impact blood pressure regulation and hypertension susceptibility, many of these identified genes and polymorphisms are candidates for population-level association studies involving blood pressure levels or hypertension status. Recent studies have suggested that the α-adducin gene may harbor polymorphisms that influence blood pressure level. Therefore, we embarked on a study to test one such polymorphism in two large US samples: one from an urban …

Bill Clinton's Operational Code: Assessing Source Material Bias, Mark Schafer, Scott Crichlow
Faculty Publications
This paper considers Bill Clinton's operational code as reflected in prepared speeches and spontaneous remarks. Differences between the two types of verbal material, their respective differences over time, and their respective variation after key intervening political events were subjected to analysis of variance as well as descriptive analyses. The results suggest that measurements based on spontaneous comments are preferable, particularly in providing sensitive measures of personal predispositions.

Exact Relations For Effective Tensors Of Composites: Necessary Conditions And Sufficient Conditions, Yury Grabovsky, Graeme W. Milton, Daniel S. Sage
Faculty Publications
Typically the elastic and electrical properties of composite materials are strongly microstructure dependent. So it comes as a nice surprise to come across exact formulae for effective moduli that are universally valid no matter what the microstructure. Such exact formulae provide useful benchmarks for testing numerical and actual experimental data and for evaluating the merit of various approximation schemes. They can also be regarded as fundamental invariances existing in a given physical context. Classic examples include Hill's formulae for the effective bulk modulus of a two-phase mixture when the phases have equal shear moduli, Levin's formulae linking the effective thermal …

We present the first simulations of non-headon (grazing) collisions of binary black holes in which the black hole singularities have been excised from the computational domain. Initially two equal mass black holes m are separated a distance ≈10m and with impact parameter ≈2m. Initial data are based on superposed, boosted (velocity ≈0.5c) solutions of single black holes in Kerr-Schild coordinates. Both rotating and non-rotating black holes are considered. The excised regions containing the singularities are specified by following the dynamics of apparent horizons. Evolutions of up to t≈35m are obtained in which two initially separate apparent horizons are present for …
