Professor Wilson is right, “Christological reflection is crossing a threshold...entering an unfamiliar room.” My response focuses his point by posing a question and proposing an answer. Is this new room a labor room or a morgue? Will christological reflection in this room labor and give birth to a new and vibrant orthodoxy and orthopraxis? Or will it die shy and embarrassed for lack of moral and spiritual fortitude, or intellectual and practical wisdom? The answer to the question of morgue or labor room lies in marking the powers and limits of christology and pluralism.

Although government intervention in religious affairs is a new and understandably worrisome experience for many American churches, history instructs us that the confrontation is not novel. We can find some comfort in the fact that this double wrestle of state with church and state with individual believers is a perennial match. After all, it has been nearly sixty years since a brutish measure in Oregon making parochial school education unlawful had to be sidelined by the United States Supreme Court in Pierce v. Certain models of the interpreter’s self-understanding within the interpretive task might be found more in keeping than others with the common life of the church, its nurture and preservation. I will explore several models of the interpreter’s self-understanding of the interpretive task, pair them with the corresponding understanding of the text and evaluate their usefulness for interpreting.
