Thinking With Luther About Jesus (Aka Sweetlips), Gary M. Simpson Oct 2012

Thinking With Luther About Jesus (Aka Sweetlips), Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

In Luther’s commentary on Ps 45, Jesus can properly by understood as “SweetLips” because of Luther’s bold nuptial rhetoric describing the beauty of Christ the Bridegroom. Jesus’ lips overflow with grace and are, therefore, pure sugar and honey

"Everyone Who Hears Will Laugh With Me": Humor And Telling God's Truth, Rolf A. Jacobson, Karl Jacobson

Faculty Publications

Since humor is an essential part of human nature, speaking the truth, including the biblical truth, seems to require the use of humor. Humor exposes our flaws and opens us to new vistas—or in theological terms, it preaches both law and gospel.

Clothed With Salvation: The Garden, The Veil, Tabitha, And Christ, Dan Belnap, Daniel Belnap

Sandwiched between the account of Saul’s conversion in Acts 9 and Peter’s vision of the Gentiles in Acts 10 is the story of the raising of Tabitha. While staying in the town of Lydda, Peter, the presiding disciple of Christ, is approached by two individuals from the neighboring city of Joppa with the request that he come and attend to the then-deceased Tabitha. When he gets there, he is met by widows weeping and wailing over Tabitha’s departure. We know practically nothing of Tabitha except that she is a believer and a woman “full of good works and almsdeeds” (Acts …

Biblical creation account differs significantly from non-biblical accounts in respect to its philosophical and theological aspects. Nevertheless, it seems that the author of the biblical account follows a similar structural pattern in respect to providing answers to how and why everything was created, thus providing the evidence for the unity of Gen 1-3. However, unlike its counterparts, the author of the biblical account depicts God and His purpose for creation in an entirely different light. In addition to perfect order in His creating acts, it is obvious that human beings were given a different role and function. As seen above …

Teaching The Four Gospels: Five Considerations, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2012

Teaching The Four Gospels: Five Considerations, Gaye Strathearn

Faculty Publications

Speaking of the Bible, the Prophet Joseph Smith declared, “He who reads it oftenest will like it best.”1 One of the challenges any teacher of the New Testament faces is being able to engender in his or her students a desire to read the Bible often enough that they will come to appreciate its rich doctrinal teachings and its powerful testimony of Jesus Christ. The four New Testament Gospels, in particular, are a treasure trove of information about his life, ministry, teachings, Atonement, and Resurrection, much of which is not available anywhere else in scripture. The purpose of this paper …

Of Stars And Sea Monsters: Creation Theology In The Whirlwind Speeches, Kathryn M. Schifferdecker Oct 2011

Of Stars And Sea Monsters: Creation Theology In The Whirlwind Speeches, Kathryn M. Schifferdecker

Faculty Publications

The whirlwind speeches at the end of Job (Job 38–41) depict a cosmos that is radically non-anthropocentric. This cosmos includes creatures and places indifferent towards human beings and quite dangerous for them. Nevertheless, God delights in these wild creatures and places and gives them a place in creation. Job responds to the whirlwind speeches by choosing to live with the same freedom God grants all of God’s creatures.

Luther On Translating The Bible, Mary Jane Haemig

Martin Luther—reformer, theologian, exegete, pastor, teacher, and counselor—was also a skilled translator. His defense of his translation of Rom 3:28 (“by faith alone”) and of several psalms provides insight into the principles that guided his translation and continue to inform the difficult and necessary work of translation.

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe: Can It Work For Bibles?, Mark A. Throntveit

Faculty Publications

How does one choose among the vast number of English translations of the Bible now available? Most important, of course, is to read any translation; but then it is important to know what kind of translation it aims to be, whether it is appropriate for the intended use, and what its biases are. Comparing several translations will bring even more insight.
