Develando Una Perspectiva Bíblica De La Sabiduría, Gustavo Gregorutti Jan 2016

Develando Una Perspectiva Bíblica De La Sabiduría, Gustavo Gregorutti

Faculty Publications

This essay looks for ways to understand some of the characteristics of the biblical paradigm of wisdom. Being wise implies that the person who possesses it, to a greater or lesser degree, is able to handle circumstances to achieve the welfare of others and of one’s self. Developing wisdom does not seem to be related to personal characteristics. It is actually a series of identification processes with the biblical worldview that conditions daily behavior. To illustrate these concepts, this study makes a comparison using the cases of Daniel and Samson as a continuum that goes from more toward less wisdom. …

Faculty Publications

My primary focus is on mutually consensual homoerotic activity as practiced within the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community.

The Return Of Rhetorical Analysis To Bible Studies, Noel B. Reynolds Oct 2015

The Return Of Rhetorical Analysis To Bible Studies, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

There is now a growing consensus that the eighth and seventh centuries produced a distinctive Hebrew rhetoric that enabled writers, even down into New Testament times, to use both words and structures to communicate with readers in ways that have been largely invisible to modern Western interpreters. In this essay, the efforts of two leaders of this movement in Biblical studies to explain and defend their respective versions of this developing approach are reviewed.

The Tower Of Babel Account: A Linguistic Consideration, Dallin D. Oaks May 2015

The Tower Of Babel Account: A Linguistic Consideration, Dallin D. Oaks

Faculty Publications

The biblical account of the Tower of Babel has generally not been taken seriously by scholars in historical linguistics, but what are regarded by some as problematic aspects of the account may actually relate to claims that have been incorrectly attributed to the account. In fact, the account may not be reporting a sudden· and immediate confusion of languages, or even a sequence in which a confusion of languages led to a scattering of the people. Indeed, a close examination of the account seems to allow an interpretation of events that is compatible with what linguists have observed about [how …

Gospel Merisms In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds Apr 2015

Gospel Merisms In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This study extends previous work that identifies three inclusios in the Book of Mormon, each of which presents the same definition of the doctrine or gospel of Jesus Christ. But none of the three definitions is presented in the way modern readers might expect. Rather, each offers a series of statements focusing on different actions or events that are related to each other as parts of the way that leads to eternal life. On first reading, they could easily seem disconnected or even contradictory. But as these earlier studies demonstrate, when all these statements and their repeated elements are examined …

Biblical Worldview And The Business Curriculum: The Scriptural Foundations For Business Series, Bruce Wrenn, Michael E. Cafferky Apr 2015

Biblical Worldview And The Business Curriculum: The Scriptural Foundations For Business Series, Bruce Wrenn, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Publications

Business faculty at Christian Colleges take seriously the obligation and privilege of integrating faith and learning in their courses. Providing students with a biblical worldview (BW) of the business disciplines gives them an understanding of how the discipline covered in their courses can be comprehended — and eventually practiced — within the context of biblical truth. To date, faculty have had few resources that integrate a systematic, rigorous presentation of a BW across the curriculum. A new series is now available to help business faculty accomplish that goal.

Return To Political Theology, Joshua D. Hawley Mar 2015

Return To Political Theology, Joshua D. Hawley

Faculty Publications

There was a time when theology was called the "queen of the sciences." From the beginnings of the university in the High Middle Ages through the nineteenth century, theology formed the backbone of liberal instruction at institutions of higher learning. Those days are long past. What remains of theological investigation in most major American universities has been trans- posed into the study of religion and safely sequestered in "religious studies" departments. Few undergraduates today encounter theology as a discipline-and as for law students, well, the idea that theology might have some relevance for the study of law is regarded in …

Ar Trebui Femeile Să Fie Hirotonite Ca Pastori? Considerații Asupra Vechiului Testament - Partea A Iv-A, Richard M. Davidson

Faculty Publications

This is the last part of a four-part series of studies published in the previous issues of TheoRhēma on women ordination from an Old Testament perspective, including the eschatological future envisaged by the same. It has been argued that the OT witness regarding male-female relations in the covenant community indicates that despite the patriarchal culture and divine condescension to the hardness of human hearts, the way back to the Edenic ideal for equality in gender relations was upheld in that all the various kinds or positions of leadership according to God’s ideal were open to, and filled by, women: priest, …

Condemnation And Grace: Polygamy And Concubinage In The Old Testament, Richard M. Davidson Jan 2015

Condemnation And Grace: Polygamy And Concubinage In The Old Testament, Richard M. Davidson

Faculty Publications

Although the Old Testament frankly documents a departure from the Edenic model of sexuality in actual practice, Mosaic legislation prohibits polygamy/concubinage as part of universal moral law. Moreover, within the narratives involving plural marriage, the divinely inspired writers invariably embed their tacit condemnation of the practice.

Shelamzion Alexander, Hyrcanus Ii, And Aristobulus Ii In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Kenneth Atkinson Dec 2014

Shelamzion Alexander, Hyrcanus Ii, And Aristobulus Ii In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

The reign of Queen Shelamzion Alexandra (ca. 79-67 B.C.E.), commonly known as Salome Alexandra, marks a unique period in the history of the Hasmonean dynasty. She is not only the sole Hasmonean queen regnant, but a person whose reign is difficult to reconstruct. Josephus’ two accounts of her time in power in his War and Antiquities often differ. The latter of the two, moreover, is consistently more negative than the former work. Although the Rabbinic literature generally describes her in a favorable light, this material is quite late and is therefore of dubious historical value. Although some scholars have tried …

Judah Aristobulus And Alexander Jannaeus In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Kenneth Atkinson Dec 2014

Judah Aristobulus And Alexander Jannaeus In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

The reigns of Judah Aristobulus and Alexander Jannaeus marked a major turning point in the history of the Hasmonean dynasty. Judah Aristobulus transformed his family’s state into a monarchy in which a single person held the offices of king and high priest. His brother, Alexander Jannaeus, succeeded him as king and high priest and expanded the boundaries of the Hasmonean state. He also preserved the territorial integrity of the Hasmonean state when he fought off invasions by Egyptian and Seleucid rulers. Although the reigns of Judah Aristobulus and Alexander Jannaeus are widely known from the writings of Josephus, the authors …

A Review By Kenneth Atkinson Of The Dead Sea Scrolls: A Biography, By John J. Collins, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

This is a concise and well-written book by one of the leading experts on the Dead Sea Scrolls. John J. Collins, the Holmes Professor of Old Testament Criticism and Interpretation at Yale University, in the pref- ace notes that this book may seem an unlikely candidate for inclusion in a series on “biographies” of books. However, he comments that the Scrolls, although not a single book but a miscellaneous collection of writings from the caves near Qumran, is not an entirely random ac- cumulation of documents. Rather, Collins comments that they appear to reflect the thought of a Jewish sect, …
