Water Use In Agriculture Now And For The Future, B. Gardner Delworth Jan 1980

Water Use In Agriculture Now And For The Future, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Water is the primary limiting factor in agriculture in the United States and the world. The western states have gained importance in agricultural production only through extensive use of irrigation from surface and groundwater sources. With the increase in population, these water supplies are facing new pressures for reallocation. Accurate scientific information concerning water availability, behavior, management, and value is essential in optimizing water allocation on farms, in agriculture, and among agriculture and the various other uses. This report is an overview of the physical, institutional, economic, and sociological aspects of the water issue from the standpoint of agriculture. It …

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Rat Albumin: Studies In Vitro And In Vivo, James F. Day, Robert W. Thornburg, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Oct 1979

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Rat Albumin: Studies In Vitro And In Vivo, James F. Day, Robert W. Thornburg, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

Incubation of rat serum with D-glucose in vitro resulted in nonenzymatic glucosylation of serum proteins. Analysis of freshly isolated rat albumin by ion exchange chromatography indicated that the glucosylated albumin accounts for 6.7.+-. 0.9% of total albumin in normal rat serum. Glucosylation of rat albumin in vitro was 1st order with respect to glucose and albumin concentrations and occurs primarily (> 90%) at intrachain lysine residues. Kinetic analysis and inhibition of glucosylation by aspirin suggest that 1 reactive lysine residue is the primary site of glucosylation. Less than 5% of the radioactivity from glucosyl-albumin was released as glucose or mannose …

Nonenzymatically Glucosylated Albumin: In Vitro Preparation And Isolation From Normal Human Serum, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Feb 1979

Nonenzymatically Glucosylated Albumin: In Vitro Preparation And Isolation From Normal Human Serum, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

Incubation of human serum with D-[6-3H]glucose resulted in the gradual accumulation of radioactivity in acid-precipitable material. Upon chromatography on Sephadex G-200, radioactivity was found associated with each of the major molecular weight classes of serum protein. Purified human serum albumin was also glucosylated in vitro upon exposure to D-[6-3H]glucose in phosphate-buffered saline. The glucosylated and unmodified albumins were separated by ion exchange chromatography. The physiological significance of these observations in vitro was confirmed by the isolation and quantitation of glucosylated albumin from normal human serum. Glucosylated albumin represents approximately 6 to 15% of total serum albumin in normal adults. The …

Characterizing Flight Aggregation Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Jack E. Coster, Paul C. Johnson Jan 1979

Characterizing Flight Aggregation Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Jack E. Coster, Paul C. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Spatial aggregation patterns of flying southern pine beetles, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., were studied using a systematic grid of sticky flight traps placed in 3 beetle infestations. Five methods of characterizing dispersion were compared: Lloyd's index of patchiness (IP), Morisita's index of dispersion (15), the coefficient of dispersion (CD), the slope of

Taylor's power function (b) and the slope of Iwao's regression of mean crowding on mean density (m). All indices indicated a high degree of aggregation of flying southern pine beetles within the infestations. The indices varied, however, in their ranking of aggregation for the 3 study sites. IP and …

European Analogues To The Class Action: Group Action In France And Germany, William B. Fisch Jan 1979

European Analogues To The Class Action: Group Action In France And Germany, William B. Fisch

Faculty Publications

For the civil proceduralist in the United States the most perplexing problems of recent years have been presented by claims of large numbers of persons against large economic interests. A single error in manufacturing design can cause a relatively small injury to each of a large number of consumers; a misrepresentation in national advertising for such goods can have similar consequences; the polluting effects of a single enterprise can be dispersed among a large neighboring population. The result is that the stake of each potential claimant in the outcome of the litigation can be greatly outweighed by the magnitude of …

Cytokine Production By Blue Tongue Virus-Infected Fetal Sheep Cells, F. M. Enright, B. I. Osburn Jan 1979

Cytokine Production By Blue Tongue Virus-Infected Fetal Sheep Cells, F. M. Enright, B. I. Osburn

Faculty Publications

The migration inhibition of guinea pig peritoneal macrophages by a factor(s) from media obtained from blue tongue virus-infected monolayer cultures was studied. Medium from blue tongue virus-infected sheep fetal cell cultures inhibited migration of guinea pig macrophages from agarose droplets. Medium from control cultures and stock virus did not inhibit macrophage migration. Medium containing migration inhibiting factor(s) in vitro induced an inflammatory reaction in the skin of a newborn sheep. The inflammatory reaction was observed 20 h after intradermal inoculation. The skin reaction consisted of infiltrates of mononuclear leukocytes in the superficial dermis. Control medium and stock virus caused no …

Effects Of Methamphetamine And Scopolamine On Variability Of Response Location, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson, John R. Thomas Jan 1979

Effects Of Methamphetamine And Scopolamine On Variability Of Response Location, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson, John R. Thomas

Faculty Publications

Methamphetamine and scopolamine were studied in monkeys responding under a multiple fixed‐ratio fixed‐interval schedule of reinforcement. A response on any one of six levers could satisfy the schedule requirements. Variability of response location was evaluated in terms of switches, where a switch was defined as a response on one lever followed by a response on a different lever. Under baseline conditions the fixed‐ratio schedule generated a high rate of responding and a low level of variability, while the fixed‐interval schedule generated a low rate of responding and a high level of variability. Both methamphetamine (0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg) and scopolamine …

Effect Of Testosterone And Estradiol-17Β Alone And In Combination On Lh And Fsh Concentrations In Blood Serum And Pituitary Of Geldings And In Serum After Administration Of Gnrh, D. L. Thompson, B. W. Pickett, E. L. Squires, T. M. Nett

Faculty Publications

16 stallions were castrated and 30 days later assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: testosterone propionate (T, 175 μg/kg BW), estradiol-17β-3-benzoate (E, 44 μg/kg BW), the combination of both steroids (TE) or control (safflower oil). These dosages were administered every other day for 18 days (low dose) and then were doubled (high dose). Treatment at the high dose was continued for 27 days and the geldings were sacrificed. Treatment at the low dose resulted in concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in serum similar to those in intact stallions during the breeding season. Concentrations of LH and FSH in peripheral serum …

Variability In 24-Hour Urine Sodium Excretion In Children, Kiang Liu, Richard Cooper, Ivan Soltero, Jeremiah Stamler Jan 1979

Variability In 24-Hour Urine Sodium Excretion In Children, Kiang Liu, Richard Cooper, Ivan Soltero, Jeremiah Stamler

Faculty Publications

How many 24-hour urine sodium measurements are adequate for characterizing a child's salt intake? Can overnight urine specimens accurately replace 24-hour collections for salt assessment? A sample of 73 6tb-8th grade children was taken from two parochial schools in Chicago to inrestigate systematically these questions. Seven consecutive 24-hour-urine specimens were collected from each child. The estimated ratio of intra- to inter-individual variances was 1.94 for 24-hour-urine sodium. Based on this value, eight 24-hour specimens are necessary to limit to 10% the diminution of the estimated correlation coefficient between 24- hour-urine sodium and blood pressure. Six measurements are required to reduce …

Can Overnight Urine Replace 24-Hour Urine Collection To Assess Salt Intake?, Kiang Liu, Alan R. Dyer, Richard S. Cooper, Rose Stamler, Jeremiah Stamler Jan 1979

Can Overnight Urine Replace 24-Hour Urine Collection To Assess Salt Intake?, Kiang Liu, Alan R. Dyer, Richard S. Cooper, Rose Stamler, Jeremiah Stamler

Faculty Publications

Are overnight urine specimens adequate for characterizing the daily salt intake of individuals, i.e., can the overnight specimen replace the 24-bour specimen? Data from 142 male participants of an ongoing trial on the primary prevention of hypertension were used to examine this question with correlation analysis and quantile classification. Estimated correlation between the true mean 24-hour and the true mean overnight sodium excretion was 0.72. Furthermore, 67% of the individuals in the upper third of the distribution of true mean overnight urine sodium were also in the upper third of the distribution of true mean 24-hour sodium. Thus, these data …

[3H]‑Raffinose, A Novel Radioactive Label For Determining Organ Sites Of Catabolism Of Proteins In The Circulation, Jonathon Van Zile, Lee A. Henderson, John W. Baynes, Suzanne R. Thorpe Sep 1978

[3H]‑Raffinose, A Novel Radioactive Label For Determining Organ Sites Of Catabolism Of Proteins In The Circulation, Jonathon Van Zile, Lee A. Henderson, John W. Baynes, Suzanne R. Thorpe

Faculty Publications

The primary tissue sites of catabolism of plasma proteins with long circulating half-lives are unknown. It has been difficult to identify these sites because plasma proteins are delivered to tissues at relatively slow rates but are rapidly degraded intracellularly within lysosomes. Therefore, a tracer attached to protein is lost from the site of uptake before an amount sufficient for quantitation can accumulate. We hypothesized that sucrose (Glupal-2 /3Fruf) would be a useful label to circumvent this difficulty because of the stability of sucrose in lysosomes; and thus, sucrose should remain in tissue long after the protein to which it was …

Timing Of Some Of The Molecular Events Required For Cell Fusion Induced By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, K. G. Kousoulas, S. Person, T. C. Holland Jan 1978

Timing Of Some Of The Molecular Events Required For Cell Fusion Induced By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, K. G. Kousoulas, S. Person, T. C. Holland

Faculty Publications

The timing of some of the molecular events that are required for cell fusion was investigated. Cell fusion was produced by a mutant of herpes simplex virus type 1 that causes extensive cell fusion during infection. The timing of molecular events required for fusion was established by the use of blocking agents. Phosphonoacetic acid blocks viral DNA synthesis; actinomycin D blocks RNA synthesis; cycloheximide blocks protein synthesis; 2-deoxyglucose blocks glycosylation of glycoproteins; high temperature, NH4Cl, and adamantanone block unknown steps required for cell fusion. For cells infected at a low multiplicity of infection, phosphonoacetic acid decreased the rate but not …

Operant Methodology In The Study Of Learning, D. M. Thompson, J. M. Moerschbaecher Jan 1978

Operant Methodology In The Study Of Learning, D. M. Thompson, J. M. Moerschbaecher

Faculty Publications

A series of experiments is described in which operant methodology is used to study the effects of drugs on 'learning'. Emphasis is placed on the technique of repeated acquisition as a behavioral baseline for studying this type of transition state. In this technique, each subject is required to learn a new discrimination each session. Multiple-schedule procedures are also described in which acquisition is compared to a 'performance' task, where the discrimination is the same each session. The learning baseline is more sensitive to the disruptive effects of a variety of drugs (e.g., cocaine, d-amphetamine, haloperidol) than is the performance baseline. …

Estimating Individual Feed Intake Of Group-Fed Steers By Modified Weighing Design, D. E. Franke, T. C. Cartwright, R. L. Ott Jan 1978

Estimating Individual Feed Intake Of Group-Fed Steers By Modified Weighing Design, D. E. Franke, T. C. Cartwright, R. L. Ott

Faculty Publications

An experimental design for estimation of feed intake of individual animals fed in pairs or groups is discussed. Procedures are given to compute 95% confidence intervals of estimates. The accuracy a researcher needs for experimentation will suggest whether he can successfully utilize this procedure for estimation of feed intake of individual animals. Disadvantages of the design appear to be related to numbers of replicates required when large numbers of animals are involved. © 1978, American Dairy Science Association. All rights reserved.
