Four nonlactating, mature, Holstein cows were fitted with ruminal cannula and used in a 4 x 4 Latin square-designed experiment to evaluate the impact of supplemental Zn and monensin on ruminal degradation of Lys and liquid 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid (HMB). Cows were fed 4.54 kg (as fed) of alfalfa hay top-dressed with 4.54 kg (as fed) concentrate once daily. Concentrates were formulated to provide 0 or 500 mg/kg of Zn as ZnSO4 and 0 or 40 mg/kg of monensin in the total diet. Zinc supplementation provided approximately 22-fold greater dietary Zn than estimated by NRC requirements. On d 14 of each …

Damages As Narrative, Melody Richardson Daily Jan 2004

Damages As Narrative, Melody Richardson Daily

Faculty Publications

The traditional approach to legal instruction in America-the casebook method-requires students to read hundreds of appellate decisions, most of which include equally terse accounts of human suffering. How might this pedagogical approach affect future lawyers? Can reading a book like Damages help law students develop the ability to empathize with their clients?

Impaired Coordination Of Nutrient Intake And Substrate Oxidation In Melanocortin-4 Receptor Knockout Mice, Diana C. Albarado, Jennifer Mcclaine, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Randall L. Mynatt, Jianping Ye, Anthony W. Bannon, William G. Richards, Andrew A. Butler Jan 2004

Impaired Coordination Of Nutrient Intake And Substrate Oxidation In Melanocortin-4 Receptor Knockout Mice, Diana C. Albarado, Jennifer Mcclaine, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Randall L. Mynatt, Jianping Ye, Anthony W. Bannon, William G. Richards, Andrew A. Butler

Faculty Publications

Mutations in the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) are associated with obesity. The obesity syndrome observed in humans with MC4R haploinsufficiency is similar to that observed in MC4R knockout mice: increased longitudinal growth, hyperphagia, and fasting hyperinsulinemia. For comparison with other commonly investigated models of obesity and insulin resistance, we have backcrossed Mc4r-/- mice into the C57BL/6J (B6) background. Female obese Mc4r-/- mice exhibit reduced energy expenditure and an attenuated increase in fatty acid oxidation following exposure to high fat diets compared to obese Lep ob/Lepob mice. The reduced energy expenditure and fatty acid oxidation correlates with changes in hepatic gene expression. …

High-Latitude Tertiary Migrations Of An Exclusively Tropical Clade: Evidence From Malpighiaceae, Charles C. Davis, Peter W. Fritsch, Charles D. Bell, Sarah Mathews Jan 2004

High-Latitude Tertiary Migrations Of An Exclusively Tropical Clade: Evidence From Malpighiaceae, Charles C. Davis, Peter W. Fritsch, Charles D. Bell, Sarah Mathews

Faculty Publications

Explanations of tropical intercontinental disjunctions involving South America and Africa typically invoke vicariance of western Gondwanan biotas or long-distance dispersal. However, many plant groups originated and diversified well after the last direct connection between Africa and South America (ca. 105 million years before the present [mybp]), and it is unlikely that long-distance dispersal accounts for the distribution of all of these. A less commonly invoked explanation, the boreotropics hypothesis, indicates that some tropical disjunctions arose during the Tertiary via high-latitude land connections when northern forests supported tropical vegetation. Malpighiaceae are widely distributed across Africa and South America and have been …

Variation In Small Sapling Density, Understory Cover, And Resource Availability In Four Neotropical Forests, Kyle E. Harms, Jennifer S. Powers, Rebecca A. Montgomery Jan 2004

Variation In Small Sapling Density, Understory Cover, And Resource Availability In Four Neotropical Forests, Kyle E. Harms, Jennifer S. Powers, Rebecca A. Montgomery

Faculty Publications

Even though many forest plants spend all or a significant portion of their lives in the forest understoty, few studies have compared understory composition, structure, and resource availability among forests. We used standardized transect-based methods to compare small sapling densities (10-50 cm tall), understory vegetation cover, canopy openness, and nutrient availability in non-gap portions of four lowland Neotropical forests: La Selva, Costa Rica (LS), Barro Colorado Island, Panama (BCI), Cocha Cashu, Peru (CC), and north of Manaus, Brazil (KM41). Sites differed significantly in all variables except canopy openness. LS had high palm and non-fern herb cover and low density of …

Response Of A Gall-Forming Guild (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) To Stressed And Vigorous Prairie Roses, Mark A. Williams, James T. Cronin Jan 2004

Response Of A Gall-Forming Guild (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) To Stressed And Vigorous Prairie Roses, Mark A. Williams, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

Two general hypotheses that describe the relationship between plant quality and host-plant preference of insect herbivores are the plant-stress and plant-vigor hypotheses. We examined the response of a gall-forming guild of insect herbivores associated with prairie rose, Rosa arkansana Porter (Rosaceae), to experimental manipulations of plant stress (addition of NaCl) and vigor (addition of nitrogen; NH4NO3). The most common members of the gall-forming guild on roses are Diplolepis ignota Osten Sacken, D. nodulosa Beutenmüller, and D. rosaefolii Cockerell (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). The repeated application of nitrogen throughout the growing season to prairie plots resulted in significantly higher plant nitrogen levels and …

The Matrix Enhances The Effectiveness Of Corridors And Stepping Stones, Kristen A. Baum, Kyle J. Haynes, Forrest P. Dillemuth, James T. Cronin Jan 2004

The Matrix Enhances The Effectiveness Of Corridors And Stepping Stones, Kristen A. Baum, Kyle J. Haynes, Forrest P. Dillemuth, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

Conservation strategies often call for the utilization of corridors and/or stepping stones to promote dispersal among fragmented populations. However, the extent to which these strategies increase connectivity for an organism may depend not only on the corridors and stepping stones themselves, but also on the composition of the surrounding matrix. Using an herbivore-host-plant system consisting of the planthopper Prokelisia crocea and its sole host plant, prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata), we show that the effectiveness of corridors and stepping stones for promoting planthopper dispersal among patches depended strongly on the intervening matrix habitat. In a low-resistance matrix (one that facilitates high …

Positional Identification Of Hypertension Susceptibility Genes On Chromosome 2, Ruth Ann Barkley, Aravinda Chakravarti, Richard S. Cooper, R. Curtis Ellison, Steven C. Hunt, Michael A. Province, Stephen T. Turner, Alan B. Weder, Eric Boerwinkle Jan 2004

Positional Identification Of Hypertension Susceptibility Genes On Chromosome 2, Ruth Ann Barkley, Aravinda Chakravarti, Richard S. Cooper, R. Curtis Ellison, Steven C. Hunt, Michael A. Province, Stephen T. Turner, Alan B. Weder, Eric Boerwinkle

Faculty Publications

Chromosome 2 has been consistently identified as a genomic region with genetic linkage evidence suggesting that one or more loci contributes to blood pressure and hypertension status. As with all complex disease traits, following-up linkage evidence to identify the underlying susceptibility gene(s) is an arduous yet biologically and clinically important task. Using combined positional candidate gene methods, the Family Blood Pressure Program (FBPP) has concentrated efforts in narrowing a large region of chromosome 2, demonstrating evidence for linkage in several populations, and identifying underlying candidate hypertension susceptibility gene(s). Initial informatics efforts identified the boundaries of the region and the known …

Influence Of Drought Stress On Sweetpotato Resistance To Sweetpotato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Coleoptera: Apoinidae), And Storage Root Chemistry, Lixin Mao, Louis E. Jett, Richard N. Story, Abner M. Hammond, Joseph K. Peterson, Don R. Labonte Jan 2004

Influence Of Drought Stress On Sweetpotato Resistance To Sweetpotato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Coleoptera: Apoinidae), And Storage Root Chemistry, Lixin Mao, Louis E. Jett, Richard N. Story, Abner M. Hammond, Joseph K. Peterson, Don R. Labonte

Faculty Publications

The effect of drought stress on the resistance of sweetpotato roots to sweetpotato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius (Fab.), was studied in 1997 and 1998 in two genotypes ("Beauregard" and "Excel") with different SPW susceptibility. Storage roots produced under drought or normal conditions were tested for adult feeding, oviposition, larval survival and pupal weight in the laboratory under no-choice and free-choice test conditions. The levels of sweetpotato resin glycoside and caffeic acid in the periderm tissue of the roots were also determined. Drought-stressed roots received significantly more SPW eggs under no-choice and free-choice conditions and more feeding punctures under free-choice conditions …

Population Genetic Structure Of The Prairie Skink (Eumeces Septentrionalis): Nested Clade Analysis Of Post Pleistocene Populations, Gregory S. Fuerst, Christopher C. Austin Jan 2004

Population Genetic Structure Of The Prairie Skink (Eumeces Septentrionalis): Nested Clade Analysis Of Post Pleistocene Populations, Gregory S. Fuerst, Christopher C. Austin

Faculty Publications

We sequenced two regions of the mitochondrial genome, ND4 and d-loop, from 64 Eumeces septentrionales to assess intra- and interspecific population differentiation. We constructed haplotype genealogies for nine Eumeces septentrionalis septentrionalis populations in previously glaciated regions and used nested clade analysis to examine the role of vicariance and dispersal in shaping the population structure of E. s. septentrionalis in the northern part of its range following Pleistocene paleoclimatological events. In addition, we used DNA sequence data to compare populations of the northern subspecies (E. s. septentrionalis) with the southern subspecies (Eumeces septentrionalis obtusirostris) to determine whether specific level differentiation is …

Survey Of Salamanders In Mississippi Limestone Caves, John G. Himes, David C. Beckett, Austin W. Trousdale Jan 2004

Survey Of Salamanders In Mississippi Limestone Caves, John G. Himes, David C. Beckett, Austin W. Trousdale

Faculty Publications

During 2000-2002 we surveyed for salamanders in the larger limestone caves of Mississippi, all within the Vicksburg Group rock unit. We found four species: Plethodon mississippi was the most abundant, followed by Eurycea guttolineata, Eurycea cirrigera, and Desmognathus conanti. We did not find Pseudotriton montanus in any of the caves, and question the validity of an investigator's statement made nearly 45 years ago that, "it is one of the most numerous salamanders in Mississippi. limestone caves." The salamander fauna we found is similar to that of the only other comprehensive survey of salamanders in Mississippi caves, conducted almost thirty years …

Genung’S Theory Of Persuasion: A Literary Theory Of Oratory Of Late Nineteenth-Century America, William D. Harpine Jan 2004

Genung’S Theory Of Persuasion: A Literary Theory Of Oratory Of Late Nineteenth-Century America, William D. Harpine

Faculty Publications

John Genung’s late nineteenth century rhetoric textbooks, although founded on an eighteenth century model of Scottish composition, present an original conception of oratory. Genung’s theory breaks free of the classical models and lays out the path to be followed during the development of speech studies among American rhetoricians of the early twentieth century.

Is Modernism Really Modern? Uncovering A Fallacy In Postmodernism, William D. Harpine Jan 2004

Is Modernism Really Modern? Uncovering A Fallacy In Postmodernism, William D. Harpine

Faculty Publications

Some postmodernists criticize the view that the logics of Western thought can be employed universally. In doing so, they assume without adequate proof that different human societies have greatly different rationalities and employ completely different logics. This essay argues that, on the contrary, widely different cultures often share noteworthy similarities in rationality.

Anatomy Of A Chaotic Attractor: Subtle Model-Predicted Patterns Revealed In Population Data, Aaron A. King, R. F. Costantino, J. M. Cushing, Shandelle M. Henson, Robert A. Desharnais, Brian Dennis

Faculty Publications

Mathematically, chaotic dynamics are not devoid of order but display episodes of near-cyclic temporal patterns. This is illustrated, in interesting ways, in the case of chaotic biological populations. Despite the individual nature of organisms and the noisy nature of biological time series, subtle temporal patterns have been detected. By using data drawn from chaotic insect populations, we show quantitatively that chaos manifests itself as a tapestry of identifiable and predictable patterns woven together by stochasticity. We show too that the mixture of patterns an experimentalist can expect to see depends on the scale of the system under study.

To Ghana: February-March 2004, Keith Clouten Jan 2004

To Ghana: February-March 2004, Keith Clouten

Faculty Publications

The first indication that Ghana might be on my travel itinerary came during the ASDAL Conference 2000 held at Andrews University. Vida Mensah, who is library director at Valley View University in Ghana, was among several librarians who came to that conference from places worldwide. As the conference workshops drew to a close, Vida stopped by my office to talk about Valley View’s need for a new library, and to ask for my help in preparing specifications for a building. Nothing was promised, but there was an underlying assumption that I would come to Valley View University sometime soon to …

“So That The Nations May Become Genuine Indian”: Nativism And Leslie Marmon Silko’S Ceremony, Dennis Cutchins Jan 2004

“So That The Nations May Become Genuine Indian”: Nativism And Leslie Marmon Silko’S Ceremony, Dennis Cutchins

Faculty Publications

Leslie Marmon Silko’s (mixed-blood Laguna Pueblo) Ceremony is a powerful novel that tells the story of Tayo, a mixed-blood Pueblo war veteran who returns to Laguna mentally crippled by his wartime experiences. As Tayo struggles to overcome the alienation his military service has created, he must also face the shame of his own mixed heritage. His suffering eventually leads him off the pueblo to a Navajo healer, Betonie, who helps Tayo create a new historical paradigm based on Navajo and Laguna mythology. Betonie’s fictional re-vision of history is, perhaps, the novel’s most important accomplishment. Through Betonie, Silko creates an alternative …

Privacy On The Open Road, Dorothy J. Glancy Jan 2004

Privacy On The Open Road, Dorothy J. Glancy

Faculty Publications

The discussion begins by describing some of the surveillance techniques and technologies that can affect the privacy of travelers along public roadways. Then the article turns to examine some of the privacy interests of people on the open road. The next part considers some of the many types of legal rights that protect the privacy of people on public roads or highways. The article concludes by addressing the principle that people on the open road have important rights to freedom from intrusions and interferences with their on-the-road activities.

Long-Lived Worms And Aging, Yuan Luo Jan 2004

Long-Lived Worms And Aging, Yuan Luo

Faculty Publications

Several investigators have generated long-lived nematode worms (Caenorhabditis elegans) in the past decade by mutation of genes in the organism in order to study the genetics of aging and longevity. Dozens of longevity assurance genes (LAG) that dramatically increase the longevity of this organism have been identified. All long-lived mutants of C. elegans are also resistant to environmental stress, such as high temperature, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and ultraviolet irradiation. Double mutations of some LAGS further extended life span up to 400%, providing more insight into cellular mechanisms that put limits on the life span of organisms. With …

Redesigning The Teacher Education Technology Course To Emphasize Integration, Charles R. Graham, Richard Culatta, Mitchell Pratt, Richard West

Faculty Publications

Teacher education programs in the United States are trying to equip tomorrow’s teachers with the technology skills needed to impact learning in the classroom. During the past decade there has been a realization that teaching technology skills alone is not adequate– pre-service teachers must also learn how to integrate the use of technology into their curriculum. This paper describes BYU’s instructional technology course and the design process that a team of instructors went through to redesign the course in order to put greater emphasis on technology integration. An iterative redesign approach was used. Several iterations of the course redesign will …

Faculty Publications

This study examined the diel activity patterns of six Louisiana pine snakes in eastern Texas using radio-telemetry. snakes were monitored for 44 days on two study areas from May to October 1996. Louisana pine snakes were primarily diurnal with moderate crepuscular activity, spending the night within pocket gopher burrows or inactive on the surface. During daylight hours, snakes spent approximately 59% of their time underground within gopher burrows, burned out/rotten stumps, or nine-branded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) burrows. Remaining time was spent on the surface either close to subteranean refuge, or in long distance movements that generally terminet at …

Effects Of Low Tide Rainfall On Intertidal Zone Material Cycling, Raymond Torres, Miguel A. Goni, George Voulgaris, Charles R. Lovell, James T. Morris Jan 2004

Effects Of Low Tide Rainfall On Intertidal Zone Material Cycling, Raymond Torres, Miguel A. Goni, George Voulgaris, Charles R. Lovell, James T. Morris

Faculty Publications

Sediment transport by rainfall-runoff processes is well documented for terrestrial landscapes but few studies have focused on rainfall-runoff effects in intertidal areas. Here we present geochemical analyses performed on sediment samples collected during low tide irrigation experiments, and tidal channel turbidity measurements taken during natural rainfall over North Inlet Marsh, South Carolina. Order of magnitude approximations indicate that a single 10 minute storm may entrain 8-15% of the local annual average sediment accumulation. This rainfall-entrained material is enriched in organic nitrogen and marine algal matter, and therefore of high nutritional quality.

Accuracy Of Airborne Lidar-Derived Elevation: Empirical Assessment And Error Budget, Michael E. Hodgson, Patrick Bresnahan Jan 2004

Accuracy Of Airborne Lidar-Derived Elevation: Empirical Assessment And Error Budget, Michael E. Hodgson, Patrick Bresnahan

Faculty Publications

As part of a countywide large-scale mapping effort for Richland County, South Carolina, an accuracy assessment of a recently acquired lidar-derived data set was conducted. Airborne lidar (2-m nominal posting) was collected at a flying height of 1207 meters above ground level (AGL) using an Optech ALTM (Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper) 1210 system. Unique to this study are the reference point elevations. Rather than using an interpolation approach for gathering observed elevations at reference points, the x-y coordinates of lidar points were located in the field and these elevations were surveyed. Using both total-station-based and rapid-static GPS techniques, observed vertical …

Localization And Transparency In Sentencing: Reflections On The New Early Disposition Departure, Michael M. O'Hear Jan 2004

Localization And Transparency In Sentencing: Reflections On The New Early Disposition Departure, Michael M. O'Hear

Faculty Publications

A newly authorized "early disposition departure" permits federal judges to reduce the sentences of criminal defendants who plead guilty quickly pursuant to a locally adopted early disposition program. The new departure mechanism provides the first formal mandate in the United States Sentencing Guidelines for "localization," that is, adjusting the sentences of federal defendants based on local circumstances. This paper provides a defense of localization, and suggests that localization may be reconciled with the Guidelines' overriding objective of transparency in sentencing. The early disposition departure provides a model of "transparent localization," but could be reformed so as to offer both transparency …

A prominent law dean is forced to resign over an alleged sexual affair with a student; a writing instructor details in a national magazine his steamy affair with his married student; a student stalks her male professor after he ends their sexual relationship and the criminal stalking charges against her are only dropped when she agrees to voluntarily leave the country. Increasingly, such tantalizing scandals are making their way into the nation's daily consciousness. Yet, behind all of these shocking tales of decadence lays the very real dilemma as to how college and university administrators should regulate consensual relationships between …
