Integration Of Computer-Based Electronics Laboratory In A Control Systems Course, Julio Garcia, Patricia Backer

Faculty Publications

The goal of this project is to adapt the work of other researchers to improve the delivery of electronics lecture and laboratory content in the Electronics & Computer Technology (ECT) area of the BS in Industrial Technology at San Jose State University. There are several other demographic factors that serve to make the delivery of instruction challenging for the department. Approximately 70% of ECT students work at least 30 hours a week. SJSU also has a diverse student population with 62% of all undergraduates identified as having non-White ethnicity. A higher percentage (69%) of the undergraduate students in the BSIT …

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Of Cancer: Current Status And Future Prospects, Rolf F. Barth, Jeffrey A. Coderre, M. Graça H. Vicente, Thomas E. Blue

Faculty Publications

Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is based on the nuclear reaction that occurs when boron-10 is irradiated with low-energy thermal neutrons to yield high linear energy transfer α particles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei. Clinical interest in BNCT has focused primarily on the treatment of high-grade gliomas and either cutaneous primaries or cerebral metastases of melanoma, most recently, head and neck and liver cancer. Neutron sources for BNCT currently are limited to nuclear reactors and these are available in the United States, Japan, several European countries, and Argentina. Accelerators also can be used to produce epithermal neutrons and these are …

Subzero Water Permeability Parameters And Optimal Freezing Rates For Sperm Cells Of The Southern Platyfish, Xiphophorus Maculatus, D. Pinisetty, C. Huang, Q. Dong, T. R. Tiersch, R. V. Devireddy

Faculty Publications

This study reports the subzero water transport characteristics (and empirically determined optimal rates for freezing) of sperm cells of live-bearing fishes of the genus Xiphophorus, specifically those of the southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus. These fishes are valuable models for biomedical research and are commercially raised as ornamental fish for use in aquariums. Water transport during freezing of X. maculatus sperm cell suspensions was obtained using a shape-independent differential scanning calorimeter technique in the presence of extracellular ice at a cooling rate of 20°C/min in three different media: (1) Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) without cryoprotective agents (CPAs); (2) HBSS with …

Nrg1, A Cc-Nb-Lrr Protein, Together With N, A Tir-Nb-Lrr Protein, Mediates Resistance Against Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Jack R. Peart, Pere Mestre, Rui Lu, Isabelle Malcuit, David C. Baulcombe

Faculty Publications

In animals and plants, innate immunity is regulated by nucleotide binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) proteins that mediate pathogen recognition and that activate host-cell defense responses [1, 2]. Plant NB-LRR proteins, referred to as R proteins, have amino-terminal domains that contain a coiled coil (CC) or that share similarity with animal Toll and interleukin 1 receptors (TIR) [3]. To investigate R protein function, we are using the TIR-NB-LRR protein N that mediates resistance against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) [4] through recognition of the TMV p50 protein. Here, we describe N requirement gene 1 (NRG1), a novel N-resistance component that …

Phytochrome Evolution In Green And Nongreen Plants, Sarah Mathews May 2005

Phytochrome Evolution In Green And Nongreen Plants, Sarah Mathews

Faculty Publications

Photoreceptors are critical molecules that function at the interface between organism and environment. Plants use specific light signals to determine their place in time and space, allowing them to synchronize their growth, metabolism, and development to the environments in which they occur. Thus, innovation in light sensing mechanisms is expected to coincide with adaptation and diversification. Three studies involving the well-characterized phytochrome photoreceptor system in plants indicate that much work is yet needed to test this expectation. In early diverging dowering plants, episodic positive selection influenced the evolution of phytochrome A, but little of the functional data needed to link …

The Neural Substrates Of Infant Sleep In Rats, Karl Æ. Karlsson, Andrew J. Gall, Ethan J. Mohns, Adele M. H. Seelke, Mark S. Blumberg Apr 2005

The Neural Substrates Of Infant Sleep In Rats, Karl Æ. Karlsson, Andrew J. Gall, Ethan J. Mohns, Adele M. H. Seelke, Mark S. Blumberg

Faculty Publications

Sleep is a poorly understood behavior that predominates during infancy but is studied almost exclusively in adults. One perceived impediment to investigations of sleep early in ontogeny is the absence of state-dependent neocortical activity. Nonetheless, in infant rats, sleep is reliably characterized by the presence of tonic (i.e., muscle atonia) and phasic (i.e., myoclonic twitching) components; the neural circuitry underlying these components, however, is unknown. Recently, we described a medullary inhibitory area (MIA) in week-old rats that is necessary but not sufficient for the normal expression of atonia. Here we report that the infant MIA receives projections from areas containing …

Hibernation Is Recorded In Lower Incisors Of Recent And Fossil Ground Ssquirrels (Spermophilus), Tom Goodwin, Gail R. Michener, Daniel Gonzalez, Caroline E. Rinaldi

Faculty Publications

Incremental dentin and associated enamel, features visible on the surface of lower incisors, were characterized for 3 species of ground squirrels (Spermophilus): Pleistocene and Recent S. elegans, Recent S. richardsonii, and Recent S. parryii. A hibernation mark was evident in incisor dentin and enamel, most characteristically as a sleeve of enamel terminating basally adjacent to medially depressed dentin with indistinct and often very fine increments. This mark was absent in juveniles but present in older animals of both sexes for at least 6 weeks after hibernation, eventually being lost through growth and wear of the incisor. Temporal association with hibernation …

Mendelian Microsatellite Loci For The Caribbean Coral Acropora Palmata, Iliana B. Baums, Colin R. Hughes, Michael E. Hellberg

Faculty Publications

The genus Acropora constitutes the most species-rich clade of hermatypic corals, and its members are important reef builders throughout their broad tropical range. In the Caribbean, acroporid populations have declined over the last 2 decades due to disease, hurricanes, predation, and bleaching episodes, and some are now subjects of conservation efforts. Genetic estimates of population connectivity and clonal structure should be part of these efforts, but such studies have been hampered by low levels of mitochondrial DNA variation in corals, and an apparent dearth of variable single-copy nuclear markers. Developing microsatellite markers in Acropora has proven especially difficult. We used …

Design And Simulation Of A Permanent-Magnet Electromagnetic Aircraft Launcher, Dean Patterson, Antonello Monti, Charles W. Brice, Roger A. Dougal, Robert O. Pettus, Srinivas Dhulipala, Dilip Chandra Kovuri, Tiziana Bertoncelli

Faculty Publications

This paper describes the basic design, refinement, and verification using finite-element analysis, and operational simulation using the Virtual Test Bed, of a linear machine for an electromagnetic aircraft launcher, for the aircraft carrier of the future. Choices of basic machine format and procedures for determining basic dimensions are presented. A detailed design for a permanent-magnet version is presented, and wound-field coil and induction machine versions are briefly discussed. The long armature-short field geometry is justified, and in particular the impact of this geometry on the scale of the power electronic drive system is examined.

Reopening The Emmett Till Case: Lessons And Challenges For Critical Race Practice, Margaret M. Russell Mar 2005

Reopening The Emmett Till Case: Lessons And Challenges For Critical Race Practice, Margaret M. Russell

Faculty Publications

As part of the symposium panel on "Re- Trying Racial Injustices," I devote this Essay to an expansion of themes addressed in my earlier work on the reopening of civil rights era prosecutions. I draw upon this work, as well as upon the insights of my co-panelists Anthony Alfieri and Sherrilyn Ifill, to examine the reopening of the Emmett Till case and its critical race practice possibilities.

In this Essay, I consider other aspects of these "cleansing moments." Are they illusory? Do they provide a misleading sense of closure at the expense of the ongoing hard work of racial justice …

Indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Detection Of Brucella Melitensis-Specific Antibodies In Goat Milk, N. D. Funk, L. B. Tabatabai, P. H. Elzer, S. D. Hagius, B. M. Martin, L. J. Hoffman Feb 2005

Indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Detection Of Brucella Melitensis-Specific Antibodies In Goat Milk, N. D. Funk, L. B. Tabatabai, P. H. Elzer, S. D. Hagius, B. M. Martin, L. J. Hoffman

Faculty Publications

Brucella melitensis is the cause of brucellosis in sheep and goats, which often results in abortion. Few cases of B. melitensis infection in goats have occurred in the United States over the last 25 years. However, vigilance must be maintained, as it is for the bovine milk industry, to ensure that brucellosis is not introduced into the U.S. goat population. The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive and specific indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) for the detection of B. melitensis-specific antibodies in goat milk. Brucella salt-extractable protein extract was employed as an antigen, and a horseradish peroxidase-labeled …

Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura Feb 2005

Fast And Robust Incremental Action Prediction For Interactive Agents, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

The ability for a given agent to adapt on-line to better interact with another agent is a difficult and important problem. This problem becomes even more difficult when the agent to interact with is a human, since humans learn quickly and behave non-deterministically. In this paper we present a novel method whereby an agent can incrementally learn to predict the actions of another agent (even a human), and thereby can learn to better interact with that agent. We take a case-based approach, where the behavior of the other agent is learned in the form of state-action pairs. We generalize these …

Predicting Numbers Of Hauled-Out Harbour Seals: A Mathematical Model, James L. Hayward, Shandelle M. Henson, Clara J. Logan, Catherine R. Parris, Matthew W. Meyer, Brian Dennis

Faculty Publications

1. It was once assumed that commercially important fish make up significant portions of seal diets. As a consequence, prior to the 1970s many seal populations were dramatically reduced by rampant slaughtering. Today, seals and other marine mammals are valued components of marine ecosystems and their numbers are carefully managed. To facilitate management, government statutes mandate the systematic monitoring of seal populations. Population estimates are based on counts of hauled-out seals obtained by aerial survey and radio and satellite telemetry; hence, considerable effort has been devoted to finding optimal times for such counts. We have developed a predictive mathematical model …

Ponazuril Inhibits The Development Of Eimeria Vermiformis In Experimentally Infected Outbred Swiss Mice, S. A. Billeter, J. A. Spencer, Bill Chobotar, B. L. Blagburn

Faculty Publications

We evaluated a 15% paste formulation of ponazuril in outbred Swiss mice that were experimentally infected with Eimeria vermiformis. Thirty, 8-week-old female mice (approximately 20 g) were placed in one group of 10 mice and one group of 20 mice. Mice in both groups were gavaged with approximately 5,000 sporulated oocysts of E. vermiformis on day 0. Mice in group 2 (n=10) were treated orally on days 3 and 4 with ponazuril (suspended in 30% propylene glycol) at the rate of 20 mg/kg. Mice in group 1 (n=20) were gavaged with a similar volume of 30% propylene glycol. Rates of …

A Virtual Environment For Remote Testing Of Complex Systems, Loredana Cristaldi, Alessandro Ferrero, Antonello Monti, Ferdinanda Ponci, William Mckay, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

Complex systems, realized by integration of several components or subsystems, pose specific problems to simulation environments. It is, in fact, desirable to simulate the complex system altogether, and not component by component, since the operation of the single part depends on the surrounding system and an early verification can prevent damages and save time for modifications. The availability of detailed and validated models of the single parts is therefore critical. This task may be difficult to achieve. In fact, in industrial applications, where a system can be a mix of different devices produced by different manufacturers, the physical device may …

Association Between Dietary Carbohydrates And Body Weight, Yunsheng Ma, Barbara Olendzki, David Chiriboga, James R. Hébert, Youfu Li, Wenjun Li, Mary Jane Campbell, Katherine Gendreau, Ira S. Ockene

Faculty Publications

The role of dietary carbohydrates in weight loss has received considerable attention in light of the current obesity epidemic. The authors investigated the association of body mass index (weight (kg)/height (m)2) with dietary intake of carbohydrates and with measures of the induced glycemic response, using data from an observational study of 572 healthy adults in central Massachusetts. Anthropometric measurements, 7-day dietary recalls, and physical activity recalls were collected quarterly from each subject throughout a 1-year study period. Data were collected between 1994 and 1998. Longitudinal analyses were conducted, and results were adjusted for other factors related to body …

Standardization Of Photometric Measurement Of Sperm Concentration From Diploid And Tetraploid Pacific Oysters, Crassostrea Gigas (Thunberg), Qiaoxiang Dong, Benoit Eudeline, Changjiang Huang, Terrence R. Tiersch Jan 2005

Standardization Of Photometric Measurement Of Sperm Concentration From Diploid And Tetraploid Pacific Oysters, Crassostrea Gigas (Thunberg), Qiaoxiang Dong, Benoit Eudeline, Changjiang Huang, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

To provide necessary standardization of procedures for cryopreservation of sperm, a spectrophotomeric method was developed to determine the sperm concentration of diploid and tetraploid Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas. Wavelengths of 380, 550, 581 and 780 nm were compared, and 550 and 581 nm were found to be the most sensitive and reliable. A linear relationship between sperm concentration and photometric absorbance was observed for sperm concentrations between 2 × 107 and 2 × 109 cells mL -1. The regression equation for the standard curve at 550 nm for sperm of diploid oysters was Y = - 8.528+1.165 log X. The …

Responses Of Coccidia-Vaccinated Broilers To Essential Oil Blends Supplementation Up To Forty-Nine Days Of Age, E. O. Oviedo Rondon, S. Clemente-Hernandez, P. Williams, R. Losa Jan 2005

Responses Of Coccidia-Vaccinated Broilers To Essential Oil Blends Supplementation Up To Forty-Nine Days Of Age, E. O. Oviedo Rondon, S. Clemente-Hernandez, P. Williams, R. Losa

Faculty Publications

Coccidiosis control may become a greater problem as the use of growth-promoting antibiotics (GPA) and ionophores declines. Vaccination with live oocysts may turn into a popular alternative to the use of coccidiostats in broilers, although cocci vaccination is frequently linked to temporary lower performance in young flocks. This experiment evaluates the dietary supplementation of 2 specific essential oil (EO) blends (Crina Poultry and Crina Alternate), either as alternatives to GPA and ionophores (BMD + Coban) or as feed additives that help to improve the performance of cocci-vaccinated broilers. Live performance and lesion scores were observed. These 2 specific EO blends …

Evaluation Of A New Method For Measuring Salamanders, Leroy J. Walston, Stephen J. Mullin Jan 2005

Evaluation Of A New Method For Measuring Salamanders, Leroy J. Walston, Stephen J. Mullin

Faculty Publications

Collection of morphometric data is essential to many field studies of amphibian populations. One of the most common measurements obtained from salamanders is snout-to-vent length (SVL), a parameter useful in studies of sexual dimorphism (Bovero et al. 2003), demography (Semlitsch 1985), and systematics (Carlin 1997). Measuring salamander lengths in the field is challenging because of their small size, slimy texture, and propensity to maintain a nonlinear body position. Time expenditure is another concern, especially when researchers process large numbers of salamanders. Different measurement techniques vary in accuracy and precision, limiting the reliability of the data so that comparisons cannot be …

Allometry, Sexual Size Dimorphism, And Niche Partitioning In The Mediterranean Gecko (Hemidactylus Turcicus), James B. Johnson, Lance D. Mcbrayer, Daniel Saenz

Faculty Publications

Hemidactylus tucrius is a small gekkonid lizard native to the Middle East and Asia that is known to exhibit sexual dimorphism in head size. Several potential explanations exist for the evolution and maintenance of sexual dimorphism in lizards. We tested 2 of these competing hypotheses concerning diet partitioning and differential growth. We found no differences in Average meal size (volume) or in any single dimension of prey size for similarly sized males and females. allometric patterns of increases in head size also were measured in males and females. We found that males exhibited a mixture of isometric and positively allometric …
