Care In The Workplace:The Employer’S Role In The Alleviation Of The Eldercare Problem, Joseph Michael Duda
Care In The Workplace:The Employer’S Role In The Alleviation Of The Eldercare Problem, Joseph Michael Duda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Center for Disease Control has referred to the group of people, aged 18-35, who have an elderly dependent they care for (by which I mean physical, emotional, or mental assistance necessary for the elderly dependent’s continued living) and are entering the workforce as the “sandwich” generation. These people are at the age where they may be simultaneously raising a child and taking care of an elderly family member. It has been estimated that, as of 2006, 17% of the U.S. workforce belong to the sandwich generation. In addition to the sandwich generation, there are 44 million people in the …

Significant differences were present between jump height of the CMJ and SJ respectively, with high correlation coefficients to jump velocity in both jump techniques.
An Approach To Semi-Autonomous Indoor Drone System: Software Architecture And Integration Testing, Shobhan Singh
An Approach To Semi-Autonomous Indoor Drone System: Software Architecture And Integration Testing, Shobhan Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To address these problems, we establish a semi-autonomous functionality by removing the RC transmitter, and remotely connecting the Drone System to track status and executing user-based input commands. In order to resolve the limitation in hardware connections on the Flight Controller, we integrated the sonar sensor into a companion computer, from where the data is continuously fed to an embedded system through MAVLink (Micro Aerial Vehicle Link) network communication protocol. In this study, we also implemented a modular architecture which enables scalable integration of sensor modules into the Drone System to streamline the process of development, deployment, testing and debugging.
The Temporal Conatus And The Problem Of Motion From Eternity, David Harmon
The Temporal Conatus And The Problem Of Motion From Eternity, David Harmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spinoza’s theory of persistence is articulated through the conatus (EIp7) and the ratio of motion and rest (EIIp13). Section I explores Spinoza’s usage of “motion,” and illustrates that the conatus is essentially temporal. From this claim and Spinoza’s conception of eternity, the problem arises. I explain this as a contradiction between Natura naturata and Natura naturans. Section II features an evaluation of the potential acosmist solution and reveals how it contradicts other Spinozistic commitments. I construct an alternative solution in Section III. Temporal passage is not an adequate idea for Spinoza. However, Spinoza considers duration to be a feature of …
Design And Investigation Of Genetic Algorithmic And Reinforcement Learning Approaches To Wire Crossing Reductions For Pnml Devices, Alexander Keith Gunter
Design And Investigation Of Genetic Algorithmic And Reinforcement Learning Approaches To Wire Crossing Reductions For Pnml Devices, Alexander Keith Gunter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perpendicular nanomagnet logic (pNML) is an emerging post-CMOS technology which encodes binary data in the polarization of single-domain nanomagnets and performs operations via fringing field interactions. Currently, there is no complete top-down workflow for pNML. Researchers must instead simultaneously handle place-and-route, timing, and logic minimization by hand. These tasks include multiple NP-Hard subproblems, and the lack of automated tools for solving them for pNML precludes the design of large-scale pNML circuits.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This applied research study sought to improve the retention rate of beginning teachers through a teacher mentoring program. The need for the teacher retention rate to improve became evident as student achievement fell, new teacher training costs increased, and fewer new teachers entered the teaching profession. Using four elements in this study, mentoring, job-embedded coaching, individual growth plan, and culture development, the program sought to better support new teachers during the first few years of their careers. Surveys, evaluations, collaboration logs, and professional growth plans were used in the study. The findings revealed improvement in the teacher retention rate in …
Recycled Ceos And Managerial Ability: Do Venture Backed Companies Have A Comparative Advantage?, Sydnee C. Manley
Recycled Ceos And Managerial Ability: Do Venture Backed Companies Have A Comparative Advantage?, Sydnee C. Manley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the relationship between experienced chief executive officers (CEOs), venture capital support, and company performance. Much of the success of venture backed companies is attributed to the reputation, monitoring, and networking of venture capitalists (Hochberg, Ljungqvist, and Lu 2007; Katz 2009). One crucial task of venture capitalists, or any stakeholder, is to find talented executives to lead their companies. However, finding quality CEOs for young growth companies with a relatively short financial history can be a difficult endeavor. Venture capitalists may have a comparative advantage in this area because they network within the venture capital industry to “ …

Ownership Conversion As A Solution For Ex Post Agency Problems: The Case Of Franchising, Erik Tristan Markin
Ownership Conversion As A Solution For Ex Post Agency Problems: The Case Of Franchising, Erik Tristan Markin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the strategic decision of franchising firms to convert company-owned outlets to franchise contracts in response to persistent agency problems. Moreover, this study investigates how franchisor-level, market-level, and outlet-level characteristics interact with this relationship. Using a longitudinal sample of company-owned fast-food restaurants, I find that increased agency problems at focal restaurants increases the likelihood of being converted to a franchise and that this relationship is moderated by both franchisor- and outlet-level characteristics but not market-level characteristics. Limitations and future research opportunities are discussed.
Ecological Factors Associated With Habitat Use Of Baird’S Tapirs (Tapirus Bairdii), Victoria Diane Monette
Ecological Factors Associated With Habitat Use Of Baird’S Tapirs (Tapirus Bairdii), Victoria Diane Monette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Baird’s tapir, the largest terrestrial mammal in Central America and a crucial seed disperser and ecosystem engineer, has experienced a 50% loss of habitat in its geographic range during the past 30 years. Efforts to conserve this species need to consider factors that have contributed to its endangerment, such as how human presence and human-mediated habitat change may influence tapir behavior, body condition, and disease susceptibility. In this thesis I had two goals: 1) understand how human disturbance affects tapir activity patterns, and 2) noninvasively determine the association of disturbance with tapir health. I first compared the activity patterns …

Raptor Codes For Biawgn Channel: Snr Mismatch And The Optimality Of The Inner And Outer Rates, Hussein Fadhel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fountain codes are a class of rateless codes with two interesting properties, first, they can generate potentially limitless numbers of encoded symbols given a finite set of source symbols, and second, the source symbols can be recovered from any subset of encoded symbols with cardinality greater than the number of source symbols. Raptor codes are the first implementation of fountain codes with linear complexity and vanishing error floors on noisy channels. Raptor codes are designed by the serial concatenation of an inner Luby trans-form (LT) code, the first practical realization of fountain codes, and an outer low-density parity-check (LDPC) code. …
Development Of Cobalt And Iron Catalysts Bearing Rigid Polydentate Ligands For Proton Reduction And C-H Bond Oxidation, Lizhu Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The demand for energy consumption has increased exponentially since the Industrial Revolution. The major source of this energy has been and continues to be fossil fuels. The depletion of fossil fuels and environmental concerns associated with their combustion has motivated us to develop a renewable energy alternative to meet future energy demands. Hydrogen is a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels, which can be generated from solar-driven water splitting. However, more efficient and inexpensive catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are needed. In this context, hydrogen production has been investigated with a stable and highly reactive cobalt-based catalyst. While …

Exploration of salt features has been intermittent throughout Mississippi, but has shifted from targeting pay zones along the crests of domal and piercement salt features in the 1940s, to targeting reserves along the flanks of these features in the 1970s. The dominant structural feature in Pelahatchie Field is an elongate north-south-trending salt ridge. Results of …
Road Trippin': Twentieth-Century American Road Narratives From On The Road To The Road, Scott M. Obernesser
Road Trippin': Twentieth-Century American Road Narratives From On The Road To The Road, Scott M. Obernesser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Road Trippin:’ Twentieth-Century American Road Narratives and Petrocultures from On The Road to The Road" examines late-twentieth century U.S. road narratives in an effort to trace the development of American petrocultures geographically and culturally in the decades after World War II. The highway stories that gain popularity throughout the era trace not simply how Americans utilize oil, but how the postwar American oil ethos in literature, film, and music acts upon and shapes human interiority and vice versa. Roads and highways frame my critique because they are at once networks of commerce transportation and producers of a unique, romantic …
Factors That Influence The Pronunciation Of Interdentals In Modern Standard Arabic And English By Egyptian Arabic Speakers, Yasmine Mohamed Dahy Sedeek
Factors That Influence The Pronunciation Of Interdentals In Modern Standard Arabic And English By Egyptian Arabic Speakers, Yasmine Mohamed Dahy Sedeek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) has three different interdental fricatives /θ/, /ð/, and the emphatic interdental /ðˤ/, most Egyptian Arabic (EA) speakers do not pronounce these interdental fricative sounds, whether in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) or in English, and instead substitute them with the sibilant /s/ and /z/, respectively (Schmidt, 1987), as in the examples ‘three’ and ‘the’. The factors which influence the pronunciation of interdentals by EA speakers vary from one study to another. For instance, Ahmed Ali (2014) and El Zarka (2013) refer to dialect interference in the second language acquisition of phonology, while other studies indicate some …

Empirical Support For Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (Mtfc): A Critical Review, Jennifer Marie Ladner-Graham
Empirical Support For Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (Mtfc): A Critical Review, Jennifer Marie Ladner-Graham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC), initially intended as a treatment for chronic juvenile offenders (adolescents having multiple contacts with the juvenile justice system), was designed as an alternative to placement within group facilities. MTFC allows the adolescent to remain in the community while receiving individual and family-based interventions. These interventions are dedicated to decreasing risk factors associated with offending (e.g., poor parental supervision, association with delinquent peers, poor academic performance) and increasing protective factors (e.g., effective parenting practices, healthy relationships with supportive peers, increased school involvement). MTFC has been utilized to meet the needs of a variety of populations (e.g., …
Scheduling Irregular Workloads On Gpus, David Arthur Troendle
Scheduling Irregular Workloads On Gpus, David Arthur Troendle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This doctoral research aims at understanding the nature of the overhead for data irregular GPU workloads, proposing a solution, and examining the consequences of the result. We propose a novel, retry-free GPU workload scheduler for irregular workloads. When used in a Breadth First Search (BFS) algorithm, the proposed simple, monolithic concurrent queue scales to within 10% of ideal scalability on AMD’s Fiji GPU with 14,336 active threads. The dissertation presents an important finding that the retry overhead associated with Compare and Swap (CAS) operations is the principle reason why concurrent queues do not scale well as the number of clients …
Validating Military Culture: The Factor Analysis Of A Military-Related Adaptation Of Acculturation, Mathew A. Tkachuck
Validating Military Culture: The Factor Analysis Of A Military-Related Adaptation Of Acculturation, Mathew A. Tkachuck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The concept of acculturation has a long history, and measures of the construct attempt to assess the degree to which attitudes and behaviors reflect the interaction between different cultures. Berry’s acculturation framework (1997) is arguably the most empirically-supported and well-known model of acculturation. Berry’s model posits that an individual may have difficulty appropriately adapting to a culture different than his or her own depending on how much they are oriented to either culture. Moreover, Searle and Ward (1990) hypothesized that an individual’s acculturation orientation, in addition to how different the dominant and non-dominant cultures are from one another, impacts psychological …
Nonmedical Use Of Prescription Drugs Among Young Adults: An Examination Of Anxiety Sensitivity, Distress Tolerance, And Emotion-Driven Impulse Control Difficulties, Sara Michelle Witcraft
Nonmedical Use Of Prescription Drugs Among Young Adults: An Examination Of Anxiety Sensitivity, Distress Tolerance, And Emotion-Driven Impulse Control Difficulties, Sara Michelle Witcraft
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with anxiety disorders are significantly more likely to develop substance use disorders than those without anxiety disorders (Kessler & Greenberg, 2002). Despite a sizeable body of literature focused on etiological and maintenance factors underlying the co-occurrence of substance use and anxiety pathology, this relationship remains poorly understood. Transdiagnostic factors, specifically distress tolerance, anxiety sensitivity, and emotion-driven impulse control difficulties, have been posited to contribute to the relationship of anxiety and substance abuse, and in particular, nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD; Dennhardt & Murphy, 2013; Wolitzky-Taylor et al., 2015). The current study examined group differences among the aforementioned transdiagnostic …
Magnetic Amphiphiles And Their Potential Applications For Low Energy Separations Processes, Alexander Fortenberry
Magnetic Amphiphiles And Their Potential Applications For Low Energy Separations Processes, Alexander Fortenberry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Predicting the behavior of magnetic surfactants in magnetic fields is critical for designing magnetically driven processes such as chemical separations or the tuning of surface tensions. Our work supports the hypothesis that the ability of magnetic fields to alter the interfacial properties of magnetic surfactant solutions depends on the strength of association between the magnetic and surfactant moieties of the surfactant molecules. Our research shows that the stability of a magnetic surfactant in an aqueous environment is dependent upon the type of complex that contains the paramagnetic element and these findings provide valuable insight for the design of magnetic surfactants …
