Rasch Analysis Of Relational Well-Being Within The National Survey Of Adoptive Parents Of 2007: A Comparison Of Multidimensional, Consecutive, And Unidimensional Approaches To Measure Construction, Michael A. Furno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A unidimensional Rasch approach was used to explore whether the data collected through the National Survey of Adoptive Parents of 2007 (NSAP) for the well-being items represented a single latent construct and to establish a base model for comparison. A consecutive approach was then used as an exploratory tool to draw out potential multiple dimensions. Finally, multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) was used to confirm the results of the consecutive approach findings while comparing with the unidimensional baseline. Items within the survey were evaluated for scale function as well as invariance.
The comparison of three approaches (unidimensional, combined consecutive, and …
Control Strategy For A Small-Scale Microgrid Based On Battery Energy Storage System-Virtual Synchronous Generator (Bess-Vsg), Wei Gao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As one of widely deployed renewable energy resources, PV power is playing a very important role in microgrids today. It has advantages such as making the best of natural solar energy and being friendly to our environment. In this thesis, solar PV based microgrid is studied using modeling and simulation. Microgrid can run in either grid-connected-mode or islanded-mode. However, there are also some disadvantages for solar power. For solar panel, its output is influenced by weather conditions such as illumination intensity and temperature. In addition, during the control process of grid-connected mode, it is hard to guarantee its output power …
Divergence Of Threespine Stickleback That Differ In Nuptial Coloration, Clara Sophie Jenck
Divergence Of Threespine Stickleback That Differ In Nuptial Coloration, Clara Sophie Jenck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has led to a much better understanding of the evolutionary processes that mold and structure variation within and among populations. How populations diverge at the genome-wide level and how polymorphism is maintained within a species, however, remains unclear. We address these questions with two freshwater color morphs, red and black, of the threespine stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from the northwest United States, in which a shift from red to black nuptial coloration occurred in several locations following glacial retreat. We measured phenotypic variation in a suite of traits and used next generation sequencing to characterize within-species and among-morph …
"Ocular Proof": Race, Religion, And Gender In The Merchant Of Venice And Othello, Edward A. Cooper
"Ocular Proof": Race, Religion, And Gender In The Merchant Of Venice And Othello, Edward A. Cooper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project is a study of the development of early modern racial categories in England - focusing on religion and skin color as primary modes of demarcation interwoven with other prevalent categories of language, ancestry/blood, nationality, and gender - as illuminated in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and Othello. Religion and skin color, then, are the primary modes of racializing individuals in early modern England and characters in Shakespeare's works. This essay studies the context of racial difference as present in English and European rhetoric, art, theater, and exploration. Given this context, the paper explores the poetic geography …

Don't Let Their Future Blow Away: An Integrated Methodology To Inform School Leaders Of The Dimensions And Determinants Of School Vulnerability Leading To Disaster Learning Loss, Kaleen Daneil Weiland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
School leaders play a key role in the critical functions of emergency response in a school system, including purposefully sustaining safe, secure, and healthy learning environments for all students before and after a disaster. Despite these values, school leaders remain underprepared and often unaware of the vulnerabilities associated with weather, climate, and other disaster events and the potential threat that climate change poses to both student achievement and access to education. This study presents school-leaders with a landscape-scale geospatial vulnerability assessment of school districts exposed to, or threatened by, hurricanes in order to improve mitigation efforts in schools. In this …
Social Aspects Of Food-Sensitive Adults, Jean Elizabeth Duane
Social Aspects Of Food-Sensitive Adults, Jean Elizabeth Duane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
People living with food-related illnesses find themselves subjugated by commonly held ideologies causing awkwardness in social situations. The current study is a qualitative analysis addressing how people with celiac disease (CD) navigate social situations in light of dominant beliefs that influence behaviors. Initially, I identify macro-level patriarchal, religious, sexist, ableist and etiquette-related commensality ideologies that disadvantage those with CD. Drawing from the communication narrative sense making (CNSM) theory that supports storytelling and memorable messages as a sense-making tool for individuals diagnosed with chronic illness and their family members, this work highlights retrospective stories and memorable messages from 20 randomly selected …
Museum To Museum Collaboration: Exploring The Relationships Between Museums And Cultural Organizations In Denver, Colorado, Leah Zavaleta
Museum To Museum Collaboration: Exploring The Relationships Between Museums And Cultural Organizations In Denver, Colorado, Leah Zavaleta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Collaboration has become a cornerstone of contemporary museum practice. In the United States, the anthropological literature on collaboration and museums has tended to be dominated by discussions on collaboration between museums and Indigenous communities in the course of implementing the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990. To date, little has been written on how collaboration is enacted among museums. This thesis explores the relationships among four museums in Denver, Colorado. By exploring how collaboration is defined, what a collaboration between museums looks like, and identifying the benefits and challenges of inter-museum collaboration, this study attempts to provide …
Amelioration Of Alzheimer's Disease Pathology In 12-Month-Old Happ(Sweind) Transgenic Mice After Treatment With A Cysteine Rich Whey Supplement, Immunocal®, Srivalli Puttagunta
Amelioration Of Alzheimer's Disease Pathology In 12-Month-Old Happ(Sweind) Transgenic Mice After Treatment With A Cysteine Rich Whey Supplement, Immunocal®, Srivalli Puttagunta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Deficits in Reelin expression and signaling play a pathogenic role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Thus, strategies aimed at correcting Reelin deficits may provide a novel therapeutic approach to treating AD. The cysteine-rich, whey protein supplement, Immunocal®, has recently been shown to rescue Reelin expression in a mouse model of Schizophrenia. Given that Reelin-expressing neurons of the entorhinal cortex region are a highly vulnerable population of cells that are lost early in AD, we examined the effects of Immunocal® in the hippocampal-entorhinal cortex formation in a mouse model of AD. Glutathione levels and Reelin expression in the hippocampal-entorhinal cortex formation (entorhinal …
Affect And Critique: Negative Dialectics And Massumi's Politics Of Affect, Heidi Ann Rhodes
Affect And Critique: Negative Dialectics And Massumi's Politics Of Affect, Heidi Ann Rhodes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Brian Massumi's concept of affect offers a model of change that relies on sensory-affective modes of resistance to neoliberal power relations. Influenced by Bergson's concepts of time and space, Massumi develops an account of perception as the capacity to entrain with ontological, affective flows of becoming before they are captured and reduced to quantifiable forms. This requires a radical reconfiguration of the body as a zone of indetermination between the virtual field of unformed potentialities and the realm of determined existence. I argue that affect theory cannot fulfill its promise to open new political possibilities without the negativity of critique …
"En El Poder Del Espíritu": A Qualitative Research Study On Social Ethics/Theology Among U.S. Latina/O Pentecostals, Néstor A. Gómez Morales
"En El Poder Del Espíritu": A Qualitative Research Study On Social Ethics/Theology Among U.S. Latina/O Pentecostals, Néstor A. Gómez Morales
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Are most US Latina/o pentecostals concerned about sharing the gospel without having any interest in the reality of oppression, discrimination, and marginalization? Are they just dancing and singing in their temples, having ecstasies and emotional experiences while ignoring the poor and their social struggle? Many scholars see US Latina/o pentecostalism as a tradition with an anemic social ethic, one that lacks any significant interest in the needs of the poorest in society. However, new research on progressive pentecostals shows a different panorama. The theological perspectives and social ethics of a vast sector of US Latina/o churches have changed considerably since …
Small-Scale Microgrid Energy Market Based On Pilt-Dao, Tianlu Gao
Small-Scale Microgrid Energy Market Based On Pilt-Dao, Tianlu Gao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the installed capacities of Distributed Generations (DGs) dramatically increasing in power systems from Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal and biomass, the operation methods of DERs tradings or transactions become more and more complicated. However, the energy market of DERs in Microgrids (MGs) is still under devolvement due to low security and transparency at present. Therefore, a small-scale microgrid energy market is proposed in this study based on Decentralized Autonomous Organization of Parallel, Integrity, Longevity, and Transparency (PILT-DAO) of the features of the blockchain. The microgrid owners can complete the transaction in the PILT-DAO market. …

Evaluating Software Testing Techniques: A Systematic Mapping Study, Mitchell Mayeda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Software testing techniques are crucial for detecting faults in software and reducing the risk of using it. As such, it is important that we have a good understanding of how to evaluate these techniques for their efficiency, scalability, applicability, and effectiveness at finding faults. This thesis enhances our understanding of testing technique evaluations by providing an overview of the state of the art in research. To accomplish this we utilize a systematic mapping study; structuring the field and identifying research gaps and publication trends. We then present a small case study demonstrating how our mapping study can be used to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multi-robot teams find applications in emergency response, search and rescue operations, convoy support and many more. Teams of autonomous aerial vehicles can also be used to protect a cargo of airplanes by surrounding them in some geometric shape. This research develops a control algorithm to attract UAVs to one or a set of bounded geometric shapes while avoiding collisions, re-configuring in the event of departure or addition of UAVs and maneuvering in mission space while retaining the configuration. Using potential field theory, weighted vector fields are described to attract UAVs to a desired formation. In order to achieve this, three …
Targeted-Ion Mass Spectrometry For The Identification Of Forensically Relevant Biological Fluids And Samples From Sexual Assault Evidence, Heather Erin Mckiernan
Targeted-Ion Mass Spectrometry For The Identification Of Forensically Relevant Biological Fluids And Samples From Sexual Assault Evidence, Heather Erin Mckiernan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Forensic practitioners have long sought efficient and reliable means for identifying those samples that are best suited for successful genetic profiling. Traditional serological screening methodologies rely upon enzyme activity and antibody-based serological tests. These tests can be consumptive, laborious and costly while reliance on antibody-based serological testing can be prone to error. Positive results resulting from non-target biological fluids, the potential for cross- reactivity and non-specific binding events yield merely presumptive results. This has led forensic biologists to omit serological testing, at least in the case of sexual assault kit samples, in favor of Y-Screen assays. While these Y-Screen approaches …

Latent Growth Curve And Latent Change Score Modeling Of Developmental Relationships Between Executive Functioning And Math Achievement In Early Elementary School, Kerry-Ann Lewis Pearcy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current study compared latent growth curve (LGC) models and latent change score (LCS) models capabilities in modeling complex data in a development framework. Using the nationally representative ECLS-K:2011 dataset, LGC and LCS models explored the dynamic relationship between executive function and math achievement. The relationship between the two constructs has been extensively examined but little is understood about their dynamic relationship. The findings of this study indicated LCS to be more robust than LGC in modeling complex data and in examining dynamic relationship. The findings also suggested that one of the two executive functioning tasks, Dimensional Change Card Sort …
Exercising Obedience: John Cassian And The Creation Of Early Monastic Subjectivity, Joshua Daniel Schachterle
Exercising Obedience: John Cassian And The Creation Of Early Monastic Subjectivity, Joshua Daniel Schachterle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Cassian (360-435 CE) started his monastic career in Bethlehem. He later traveled to the Egyptian desert, living there as a monk, meeting the venerated Desert Fathers, and learning from them for about fifteen years. Much later, he would go to the region of Gaul to help establish a monastery there by writing monastic manuals, the Institutes and the Conferences. These seminal writings represent the first known attempt to bring the idealized monastic traditions from Egypt, long understood to be the cradle of monasticism, to the West.
In his Institutes, Cassian comments that "a monk ought by all …

Development And Characterization Of An Inexpensive Single-Particle Fluorescence Spectrometer For Detection And Classification Of Pollen And Other Bioaerosols, Benjamin E. Swanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Atmospheric aerosols are ubiquitous throughout the Earth’s atmosphere and can be important with respect to environmental systems and human health. Pollen particles are a class of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) that cost the United States billions of dollars a year in loss of productivity and healthcare costs due to allergy and respiratory effects. Traditional methods of pollen detection rely on collection and subsequent identification by visual microscopy, yet few measurement stations exist in the United States. As such, current pollen forecasting models have relatively high prediction uncertainty, especially in regions without sampling stations. Recently, laser-induced fluorescence instrumentation has been …

Oppositional Politics And Gramsci's Civil Society: Patron-Clientelism In Jordan And Value-Centered Scholarship, Stephen James Preisig
Oppositional Politics And Gramsci's Civil Society: Patron-Clientelism In Jordan And Value-Centered Scholarship, Stephen James Preisig
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Patron-clientelism or wasta in Jordan is a historically engrained institution that crosses social, political and economic spheres. For those with sufficient resources to enter into its system of exchange, patron-clientelism grants access to university admissions, government privileges and employment. For those without sufficient resources, patron-clientelism creates a barrier to entry that sustains the marginalized status of persons from low socio-economic backgrounds.
Most scholarship about patron-clientelism portrays it as something dynamic, inherently neither morally constructive nor problematic but with the potential to be both. By focusing on various historical manifestations of patron-clientelism, such scholarship detracts attention from its reprehensible effects. Posing …
"Somewhere I'M Allowed To Exist As Myself": A Grounded Theory Exploration Of Queer And Trans Young Adults Navigating Family Rejection And Housing Instability, Jonah P. Dechants
"Somewhere I'M Allowed To Exist As Myself": A Grounded Theory Exploration Of Queer And Trans Young Adults Navigating Family Rejection And Housing Instability, Jonah P. Dechants
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Queer and transgender young people are overrepresented among youth and young adults experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Families' rejection of their youth's queer and transgender identities is one of the causes of this overrepresentation, as families force young people out of the home or create a home environment that is so hostile that youth chose to leave. While the relationship between family rejection and queer and trans youth homelessness is well-documented quantitatively, there is not a scholarly consensus on what family rejection looks like, how queer and trans youth experiences that rejection, and how they make decisions about where to …
The Size Of The Multiplier: Comparing Alternate Views After The Great Recession, Daniel Focht
The Size Of The Multiplier: Comparing Alternate Views After The Great Recession, Daniel Focht
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reviews the major theoretical frameworks and their outlook on the government spending, its effectiveness, the implied size of the multiplier and how they differed in empirical studies. This is followed by an estimation of the government multiplier for the major U.S. fiscal policy, namely the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), after the Great Recession of 2007-2009. Own estimation of the size of the multiplier is presented using a standard SVAR model based on New Keynesian approach for time period between 2009 and 2018. In addition, following the classical economic theory, the multiplier is recalculated in the absence …

Shoulder To Shoulder Yet Worlds Apart: Variations In Women's Integration In The Militaries Of France, Norway, And The United States, Kyleanne Hunter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Women have become an essential part of Western militaries. Particularly concerning the experience of NATO militaries in Afghanistan, there has been much public attention on the role of women in the military. While Western militaries are often studied as a whole with regards to military operations, there is variation in both how women are employed in the military and the experience they have as service members. This dissertation seeks to understand the cause of this variation by examining three critical cases: France, Norway and the United States.
In this dissertation, I argue foundational beliefs about gender equality affect the institutional …
Optimal Design And Planning Of Hybrid Ac/Dc Microgrid, Hossein Lotfi
Optimal Design And Planning Of Hybrid Ac/Dc Microgrid, Hossein Lotfi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The traditional approach for microgrid design and deployment has been mainly focused on AC systems. DC microgrids, however, are gaining attention due to numerous advantages they provide over AC microgrids, such as removing the need for synchronization and frequency adjustment as well as appropriateness in supporting DC loads and distributed energy resources (DERs). Moreover, considering that both AC and DC DERs are utilized in microgrids, hybrid microgrids would provide viable and economic solutions as they can potentially eliminate the need for AC-to-DC or DC-to-AC voltage conversions. This dissertation focuses on a hybrid microgrid planning model with the objective of minimizing …
