Mitigating Weight Stigma In The Medical System: Self-Compassion For Nursing Students, Ellen C. Joseph
Mitigating Weight Stigma In The Medical System: Self-Compassion For Nursing Students, Ellen C. Joseph
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Weight stigma is a form of oppression that has been shown to have a detrimental impact on the well-being of people with higher weight. Healthcare providers are one of the most common sources of weight stigma, and their stigmatizing beliefs have been found to be associated with differential care for patients with “obesity”. The current study aimed to explore the feasibility of the loving-kindness meditation (LKM) as a brief intervention that reduces weight bias in nursing students by increasing self-compassion, positive, other-focused emotions, and cognitive flexibility, in order to improve compassionate care for patients with higher weight. Participants (189 nursing …
Regardless, ‘I’ And ‘You’: Lessons From Black Feminist Literature, Jasmine Veronica Sauceda
Regardless, ‘I’ And ‘You’: Lessons From Black Feminist Literature, Jasmine Veronica Sauceda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower, and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple from a Black feminist perspective to demonstrate oneness as capacious being. This project explores an I-You dialogue that works toward future-making through the notion of regardless, an idea from Walker’s definition of Womanist, deployed through sustained engagement with Kevin Quashie’s notion of oneness. Thus, this work extrapolates lessons found in the selected texts to demonstrate what it means to embody a capaciousness of being and how this then fosters healing in the face of trauma. In so doing, …
Opportunities And Challenges For Rural Educators: A Mixed Methods Study Of Emergent Bilingual Studies In Rural Colorado, Andrea Johnson
Opportunities And Challenges For Rural Educators: A Mixed Methods Study Of Emergent Bilingual Studies In Rural Colorado, Andrea Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over nine million students in the United States attend school in rural school districts, with a growing percentage of these students identified as emergent bilingual. The purpose of this study is to examine the national emergent bilingual literacy trends and to determine how the opportunities and challenges that rural educators encounter, impact emergent bilingual education in rural schools. Utilizing a theoretical framework of culturally sustaining practices and funds of knowledge, this study uses a convergent mixed methods design to answer the following research questions: What are the national trends in emergent bilingual reading test scores? What opportunities and challenges do …
Twice-Exceptional Identification And Identity Formation: A Mixed Methods Study, Robin Goldin Tobin
Twice-Exceptional Identification And Identity Formation: A Mixed Methods Study, Robin Goldin Tobin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research study examined the parent perceptions of and relationships among intellectual potential, academic achievement, and the order of identification of exceptionality for twice-exceptional students. Twice-exceptional students exhibit both giftedness and a learning disability or difference. Consistently and equitably identifying and serving twice-exceptional students is a persistent problem of practice in the field of education (Artiles et al., 2010; Gentry et al., 2019; List & Dykeman, 2019; Moon & Reis, 2004; Webb et al., 2019). This study was supported by a community partner, a private educational testing and advocacy agency in a Western state.
This mixed methods study utilized a …
Topics In Moufang Loops, Riley Britten
Topics In Moufang Loops, Riley Britten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We will begin by discussing power graphs of Moufang loops. We are able to show that as in groups the directed power graph of a Moufang loop is uniquely determined by the undirected power graph. In the process of proving this result we define the generalized octonion loops, a variety of Moufang loops which behave analogously to the generalized quaternion groups. We proceed to investigate para-F quasigroups, a variety of quasigroups which we show are antilinear over Moufang loops. We briefly depart from the context of Moufang loops to discuss solvability in general loops. We then prove some results on …
Development And Testing Of Remote Facilitation Of Prevent-Teach-Reinforce For Families To Address Challenging Behavior In Young Children (Ptr-F:R), Abby Hodges
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As children advance through developmental stages, they often present behavioral difficulties such as tantrums, lack of cooperation, and aggression. For some children, behaviors are serious enough that they interfere with the child’s ability to engage in positive relationships, participate in necessary routines, and learn new skills, warranting behavioral intervention (Dunlap et al., 2017). Being responsive to the needs of the family and appreciation for the central role that they play is crucial to the success of behavioral interventions and the maintenance of positive outcomes (Bailey, 2013; Campbell, 1995), thus, their input should be at the center of all recommendations and …
Addressing Racial Disparities Through K-12 School-Based Culturally Relevant Interventions, Dina Malala
Addressing Racial Disparities Through K-12 School-Based Culturally Relevant Interventions, Dina Malala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This meta-analysis systematically identified culturally relevant interventions for Black students in K-12 school settings to determine (a) the effect of culturally relevant reading interventions on reading comprehension and reading fluency (b) the effect of culturally relevant behavioral interventions on student behaviors (c) the extent to which culturally relevant interventions impact cultural identity and awareness (d) how cultural identity moderates academic and behavioral outcomes. Twelve studies were identified. Overall, there was a statistically significant combined effect across the twelve studies (g = 0.96, p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant effect of culturally relevant reading interventions on reading outcomes (g =1.174, p < 0.05), a statistically significant effect of culturally relevant behavior interventions on behavior outcomes (g = 0.889, p < 0.05), and a statistically significant effect of cultural identity interventions on cultural awareness and identity (g =0. 914, p < 0.05). The primary limitation of this meta-analysis are the mainstream and standardized dependent variables. Future intervention research is needed that utilizes both culturally relevant independent and dependent variables to better support this population.
Application Of An Organizational Evaluation Capacity Assessment In A Multinational Ngo: A Case Study To Support Applied Practice, Ryan James Smyth
Application Of An Organizational Evaluation Capacity Assessment In A Multinational Ngo: A Case Study To Support Applied Practice, Ryan James Smyth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As evaluation capacity building (ECB) has rapidly emerged as a practice in human service organizations and as a field of academic inquiry, attention has focused on methods of evaluation capacity building while assessment of organizational evaluation capacity (EC) has lagged behind. To examine the practice of organizational evaluation capacity assessment, this dissertation presents two separate but related studies. In sub-study 1, I present a qualitative evidence synthesis of the research theorizing organizational evaluation capacity models. In sub-study 2, I support the implementation of one of the tools from the evidence-synthesis at a multinational human service organization. I use a concurrent …

Soil Resilience And Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: How Fungi Can Inform Climate Change Mitigation And Adaptation In Maya Milpa Management, Courtney Mathers
Soil Resilience And Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: How Fungi Can Inform Climate Change Mitigation And Adaptation In Maya Milpa Management, Courtney Mathers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Mexico’s state of Yucatán, climate change impacts like prolonged and less predictable dry season length are manifesting as threats to agricultural production and food security. Nearly two thirds of Yucatán’s population is indigenous, many of whom live in rural communities that rely on rainfed subsistence agriculture (INEGI 2015). Ensuring sufficient food production in the face of climate change relies on the quality of agricultural soils. With both mismanagement of agricultural soils and climate change posing as threats to food production in Mexico, soil management practices that increase a soil quality should be identified and promoted. The primary objective of …
Principals’ Perspectives Of Trust And Vulnerability In Leadership: A Grounded Theory Study, Megan Ostedgaard
Principals’ Perspectives Of Trust And Vulnerability In Leadership: A Grounded Theory Study, Megan Ostedgaard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Leadership is a challenging task and leading well requires interpersonal skills that inspire those they lead to follow them. The aim of this grounded theory study is to explore the experiences of educational leaders who thoughtfully engage in trust-building and express vulnerability in their leadership practices. This study explored how six principals at kindergarten through 12th grade schools experience trust and vulnerability as building leaders. Three research questions guided this study: how do leaders experience trust, how do leaders generate trust, and how do leaders experience vulnerability.
In this study, we begin by understanding the background to the problem and …
Investigating Spatiotemporal Kinetics, Dynamics, And Mechanism Of Exosome Release, Anarkali Mahmood
Investigating Spatiotemporal Kinetics, Dynamics, And Mechanism Of Exosome Release, Anarkali Mahmood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Exosomes are small lipid-based vesicles that can carry biomolecules from one cell to another. While exosomes are crucial to maintain homeostasis in healthy cells, they are exploited by unhealthy cells to aid disease progression. Exosomes likely facilitate disease progression via the transfer of disease-causing biomolecules from unhealthy to healthy cells. Exosomes are generated in Multivesicular endosomes (MVEs) and are then secreted into the extracellular space to travel to other cells. Despite being a crucial step, very little is known about exosomes release mechanism and dynamics. To further our understanding of exosomes, specifically their secretion, my work has focused on investigating …
Transnational Religious Pluralism And Identity Formation: Oscar Romero And Salvadoran Diaspora After The Civil War, Kristian A. Diaz
Transnational Religious Pluralism And Identity Formation: Oscar Romero And Salvadoran Diaspora After The Civil War, Kristian A. Diaz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project considers the cognitive dissonance experienced by Salvadoran Catholics as civil war violence and their Catholic faith came face-to-face with Romero’s path towards canonization gathered momentum. Through binational, ethnographic observation and interviews, I gathered diverse and sometimes contradictory perspectives of local Salvadorans, transnational pilgrims at the celebration of Romero’s beatification, and Salvadoran Catholics in Los Angeles. I center the beatification event rather than the canonization mass at the Vatican two years later, in 2018, because my primary concern is the meaning Romero holds for Salvadoran’s themselves, including those living in the United States. Through the beatification and canonization, the …

Critical reflection is offered as a leadership development process that illuminates effective practices following an empirical analysis of 352 United States Air Force Academy cadet essays that describe their most profound leadership experiences. These essays are iteratively analyzed and interpreted using the critical reflection methodology. The essays were examined to find how young leaders turn experiences into leadership insights. The study takes advantage of the distinctive Academy leadership development context and the data available from cadets’ essays describing their profound leadership experiences. There are three contributions bounded in this dissertation and multiple avenues …
Memorable Messages Received By Bereaved Parents: Using Attribution Theory To Understand Hurt And Compassion, April Samaras
Memorable Messages Received By Bereaved Parents: Using Attribution Theory To Understand Hurt And Compassion, April Samaras
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The communication bereaved parents have with family members, friends, colleagues, and healthcare providers following the death of a child can serve as a great comfort or exacerbate their grief. In order to understand this communication and why bereaved parents find it helpful or harmful, this study examines bereaved parents' experiences of compassionate and hurtful communication using the frameworks of memorable messages (Stohl & Reardon, 1981) and attribution theory (Jones & Davis, 1965; Kelley, 1967). Fifty bereaved parents who lost a child between birth and 25-years-old completed an online survey. Tracy’s (2018) iterative analysis method revealed four types of compassionate messages: …
Phosphatidylserine Externalization On Non-Apoptotic Cells And Lipid Scramblases In C. Elegans, Julia Frondoni
Phosphatidylserine Externalization On Non-Apoptotic Cells And Lipid Scramblases In C. Elegans, Julia Frondoni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cell corpse clearance is key for animals to avoid inflammation and autoimmune disease. To better understand the “eat me” signal of phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure for non-apoptotic corpse clearance, we attempted to disrupt the externalization of PS on C. elegans polar bodies. The second polar body undergoes a non-apoptotic form of cell death, loses membrane integrity, externalizes PS and is cleared by embryonic cells during early development. During apoptotic and necrotic cell death, PS asymmetry is disrupted by lipid scramblases, which translocate phospholipids between the leaflets of the lipid bilayer. We found neither apoptotic nor necrotic scramblases are required for PS …
Framing, Advice-Seeking, And Medical Trust In The R/Keto Community: An Analysis Of The Medical Flair On R/Keto, Sabrina Finke
Framing, Advice-Seeking, And Medical Trust In The R/Keto Community: An Analysis Of The Medical Flair On R/Keto, Sabrina Finke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
First created in 1921, the ketogenic diet was used as a medical intervention for children suffering from severe epilepsy. However, in recent years, this highly restrictive diet has gained mainstream popularity for a number of illness management, wellness, and weight loss uses. Despite its rise in use and popularity, mainstream medical opinion still views the ketogenic diet as a last resort for severe conditions. Using a content analysis of posts tagged with the “medical” flair on the subreddit “r/Keto,” this thesis found commonalities among posts which praised the ketogenic diet and shared positive personal anecdotes were the most likely to …
Investigaion Of The Gamma Hurdle Model For A Single Population Mean, Alissa Jacobs
Investigaion Of The Gamma Hurdle Model For A Single Population Mean, Alissa Jacobs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A common issue in some statistical inference problems is dealing with a high frequency of zeroes in a sample of data. For many distributions such as the gamma, optimal inference procedures do not allow for zeroes to be present. In practice, however, it is natural to observe real data sets where nonnegative distributions would make sense to model but naturally zeroes will occur. One example of this is in the analysis of cost in insurance claim studies. One common approach to deal with the presence of zeroes is using a hurdle model. Most literary work on hurdle models will focus …
Does The Contraction History Of The Muscle Dictate Changes In Strength Following Resistance Training?, Zachary William Bell
Does The Contraction History Of The Muscle Dictate Changes In Strength Following Resistance Training?, Zachary William Bell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within-subject training models, whereby researchers apply an exercise condition to one limb, and a separate exercise condition to the opposing limb, have become routine amongst the exercise literature. However, no study has directly tested whether exercising one limb with a high-load condition will influence strength adaptations within the opposing limb, even when the opposite limb is training. Furthermore, muscle post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is representing local level changes, however, more research is warranted to understand if this can be differentially impacted with different types (e.g. low load vs. high load) of resistance training. The purpose of this study was to …

Casting The Ballot: An Analysis Of Voting Method Prefernces From 2012 – 2020, Bailey Rose Griffin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Voting is an important aspect of a democracy because it allows people get involved in the political world and it is one of the relatively cheapest ways to do with no monetary costs. Moreover, voting helps keep elected officials accountable. Over the years there have been barriers to disenfranchise groups but over the years they have been abolished. Up to date, there are four voting methods a voter could do: in-person on Election Day, in-person prior to Election Day, absentee ballots, and all-mail ballots. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic swept through the United States changed all aspects of life, including …
Serially Concatenated Continuous Phase Modulation With Sova Turbo Decoding, Zhijie Guo
Serially Concatenated Continuous Phase Modulation With Sova Turbo Decoding, Zhijie Guo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For a Serially Concatenated Continuous Phase Modulation (SCCPM) system that concatenates a rate of 1/2 Convolutional Code (CC) and an M-ary full response continuous phase modulation (CPM) signal, we design a turbo decoding scheme using the Soft Output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) and study the system performance. A decomposition model is used in CPM to reduce the number of states and separate the continuous phase encoder (CPE) with the modulator. As a soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoding algorithm, SOVA is used to generate and update the soft information of decoded signal symbols during the iterative process for both the CPM signal and …

Hot Melt Extrusion (Hme) And Amorphous Solid Dispersions (Asds) Strategies For Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs, Zhiqing Hu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) has been well known as a potential strategy to improve the bioavailability and dissolution performance of poorly water-soluble drugs. The primary concern of this approach is the long-term stability of the amorphous drug in the solid dispersion. Accurate prediction and detection of the solubility and miscibility of drugs in polymeric binary systems will be a milestone in the development of ASDs. In Chapter Ⅰ, a method based on Flory-Huggins (F-H) theory was proposed to predict and calculate the solubility and miscibility of the drug in the polymeric matrix and construct the phase diagram to identify the …
Spectroscopic Investigations Of Photoinduced Electron Transfer Processes At Interfaces And In Solution, Leigh Anna Hunt
Spectroscopic Investigations Of Photoinduced Electron Transfer Processes At Interfaces And In Solution, Leigh Anna Hunt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Photoinduced electron transfer is an essential reaction in artificial solar energy conversionapplications. The challenge for decades of research has been to demonstrate a long-lived charge separated state with high energy that in principle can be used for chemical or solar-to-electric energy conversion.[1] For example, the primary energy conversion process in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) is a photoinduced charge separation at the metal oxide-dye interface, making the formation and decay lifetime of the charge separated state an important aspect of these systems.[2, 3] Upon photon absorption, a surface-bound chromophore is promoted to a higher energy excited state, whereby it can …
Economic Analysis Of Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus) Spacing In East Texas, Carly Wright
Economic Analysis Of Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus) Spacing In East Texas, Carly Wright
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two experiments were conducted on spacing of Helianthus annuus in East Texas to determine the spacing treatment that produces the greatest revenue per m2. The experiments had four spacing treatments of 8 × 15 cm, 15 × 15 cm, 23 × 23 cm, and 30 × 30 cm. Three different cultivars were used in each experiment to determine if there was an interaction between spacing and cultivars. In both experiments, the stem height, stem diameter, flower diameter, and disk diameter increased as spacing increased. Also, as spacing increased, the days-to-harvest decreased. The 8 × 15 cm spacing produced …

Examining The Effect Of The Florida Talented Twenty Program On Black Acceptance Rates At Flagship Institutions In Alabama, Juwan D. Robinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Americans are more college-educated today than at any point in history. Black Americans have experienced persistent inequities in higher education, especially in southern states. Alabama’s history of inequity, segregation, and lack of signature initiative to generate college access maintain and sustain gaps in higher education for Black Alabamians. Black students are especially underrepresented at the two flagship institutions in the state of Alabama. In a complex legal and political context, race-conscious efforts are often challenging to advance. This positions race-neutral efforts such as percentage plans as more viable in states such as Alabama. This study examines the application of the …
