Positive Behavior Interventions And Supports Effectiveness In Southeastern Ohio, Kacey Ryan Cottrill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine how leadership implemented the positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) framework and what conclusions could be ascertained from implementing it. Leadership in southeastern Ohio districts was examined to understand how they used PBIS and if PBIS made significant differences before and after implementation. The comparison included demographically diverse areas (urban, suburban, rural) in southeastern Ohio. PBIS implementation was measured with the School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET) administered to district administrators. The resulting data from the SET and Ohio assessment scores showed no significant difference in PBIS implementation and fourth-grade reading scores of …

A Study Of Military-Connected Parental Perceptions Of Civilian Secondary School Image, Legitimacy, And Reputation, Jorge Manuel Soldevila
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using elements from the parent-based school reputation model, this qualitative methodology study explored the association between a school’s perceived image and reputation as a barrier to the school–home relationship involving military families. Military-connected family culture and diverse contexts affect parent–teacher relationships through a perceptional gap between a school’s role in what it concretely accomplishes and its beliefs about supporting students’ behavioral, emotional, and academic needs. This study aimed to explore the opinions and beliefs of military-connected families based on their experiences with schools during service. The resulting grounded theoretical model argues that military families construct a perception of school support …

Nurses Leading In Bridging The Culture Gap: Communicating With The Deaf Community, Veronica C. Leftridge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nurses provide patient care in clinics, hospitals, homes, churches, schools, communities, and military, as well as on emergency medical helicopters. When a nurse is assigned to care for a patient, the patient expects the nurse to be culturally competent, communicate effectively, and provide safe quality care. However, cultural incompetence is observed when nurses provide care for Deaf patients, but they are unfamiliar with Deaf culture. In addition, communication is a fundamental skill nurses learn in nursing school, but course content in nursing programs rarely touches on how to communicate effectively with Deaf patients. Of the approximately 325 million people in …
