The Hollidays In Mississippi: A Documentary Project About Queer Family, Legacy, And Community Struggle, Christina Alison Huff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This MFA thesis accompanies a short documentary film encompassing a “passing of the torch” story between Eric White (GoDiva Holliday) and his drag daughter, Justin Tyler (DeePression Holliday.) After twenty years of performing and directing drag shows in Tupelo, MS, White makes the decision to let go of his passion and focus on himself. He ensures that his drag daughter, Holbrook, carries on the legacy of creating LGTBQ spaces in the conservative South. This story will also touch on the familial relationship between the two drag performers who both grew up in small-town Mississippi but in different eras. The work …
Efficacy Of Acceptance-Based Interventions For Migraine: A Meta-Analytic Review, Ashley Nicole Polk
Efficacy Of Acceptance-Based Interventions For Migraine: A Meta-Analytic Review, Ashley Nicole Polk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Migraine is the most disabling of the common primary headache disorders and is the sixth most prevalent disease worldwide. Migraine contributes greatly to economic, healthcare, and personal burden. Psychological factors, including depression, anxiety disorders, and stress, further compound functional impact of migraine and contribute to avoidant coping behaviors in anticipation of or during migraine. Traditional behavioral interventions for migraine include biofeedback, relaxation training, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) targeting stress management, coping skills training, and control over pain. Contrastingly, acceptance-based approaches to headache management are those in which individuals learn to mitigate the influence of pain-related experiences on their general …
Exploratory Analysis Of Effects Of Data On Adversarial Perturbations, Hamza Ali Zafar
Exploratory Analysis Of Effects Of Data On Adversarial Perturbations, Hamza Ali Zafar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the amount of data being produced has increased tremendously. This data has allowed us to create and train machine learning models that are being used nowadays. Though these models have proven to be very effective in classification and regression problems, they do have a vulnerability. This vulnerability is exploited by adding adversarial perturbations to the original data or in the deployed model. These adversarial attacks are done by making minute changes to the data to confuse the machine learning model. This can lead to models’ misrepresentation and drop the accuracy. For the span of this paper, I …
Does The Help Grant Help? Impact Of The Help Grant On College-Going In Mississippi, Jennifer D. Rogers
Does The Help Grant Help? Impact Of The Help Grant On College-Going In Mississippi, Jennifer D. Rogers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi appropriates millions of dollars each year to the Higher Education Legislative Plan for Needy Students (HELP) Grant to help college-ready, low-income students pay for college, but little is known about the effectiveness of the program. This dissertation in practice examines the impact of the HELP Grant by comparing the college-going performance of HELP Grant recipients to the college-going performance of similar students who did not receive the HELP Grant. The study finds HELP Grant recipients complete significantly more hours and earn significantly higher GPAs than non-recipients after the first term, first year, and second year of college. With the …
Testing Emotion Regulation As A Functional Transdiagnostic Construct, Enoch Sackey
Testing Emotion Regulation As A Functional Transdiagnostic Construct, Enoch Sackey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The polythetic criteria of the DSM and ICD generate high amount of symptom heterogeneity as there are clusters of symptoms within various diagnostic category that are heuristically similar, resulting in multiple, often confusing, ways of describing sequelae of symptoms presentation. This is because the DSM and ICD classification systems were developed based on the neo-Kraepelinian framework for classifying physical illnesses, which assumes that the underlying architecture of psychopathology, which manifest in disorder symptoms, are distinct and specific. Based on this, the categorical approach to describing psychopathology has been described as purely conceptual artefact with no empirical basis in research or …
Effect Of Excipients/Solvents On The Barrier Integrity And Topical Drug Delivery Across Micropores, Abhishek Shettar
Effect Of Excipients/Solvents On The Barrier Integrity And Topical Drug Delivery Across Micropores, Abhishek Shettar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The topical and transdermal drug delivery system offers several advantages over conventional drug delivery; non-invasive, patient compliance, avoidance of first-pass metabolism, and sustaining therapeutic drug levels for several days. As a route for drug administration, skin presents a large surface area and can be used for both local and systemic drug delivery. However, the skin forms a formidable barrier protecting the human body from external environmental rigors and excessive water loss, maintaining equilibrium. The skin's barrier properties can be attributed to its unique macromolecular organization and morphology. However, the organized structure of the skin, since intended to prevent the entry …
Optimizing Exposure For Contamination Ocd: What Happens When Digust Is Specifically Targeted?, Molly E. Wickenhauser
Optimizing Exposure For Contamination Ocd: What Happens When Digust Is Specifically Targeted?, Molly E. Wickenhauser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Disgust is a basic emotion with distinct subjective, physiological, cognitive, and behavioral processes that include revulsion, parasympathetic nervous system activity, contamination-specific appraisals, and disease-avoidance behaviors. Pathological disgust responses may contribute to the development and maintenance of anxiety-related psychopathology, particularly spider and blood-injection-injury phobias, health anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Evidence-based treatments for these disorders were developed based on theories of fear and anxiety and involve exposure-based cognitive-behavior therapy. However, traditional exposure methods appear to be less effective at achieving habituation to disgust compared to fear and anxiety. Additionally, individuals with elevated disgust and primary contagion concerns seem …

Post-Newtonian Dynamics Of Eccentric, Spinning Binary Black Holes And The Associated Gravitational Waveforms, Sashwat Tanay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 2015, the gravitational wave (GW) era of astronomy began. The binary black hole (BBH) system being the primary source of GWs, are at the center stage of GW astronomy. The matched-filtering method of detection of GWs requires accurate modeling of the BBH system and the associated GWs. With the increasing sensitivity of the GW detectors, we need to push our GW models to even higher accuracy in the future. There is also a need to make these models as fast as possible to implement so as to allow for hundreds of detections in a year. This is where the …

The Hope For Peace & The Case For War In The Postwar Soviet Union, Shawn Cecconi
The Hope For Peace & The Case For War In The Postwar Soviet Union, Shawn Cecconi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The postwar Soviet Union remained militarized and failed to reform itself because of its ideological concerns against the West and its new satellite states, all at the cost of the Soviet people. This analysis will compare the Soviet government’s external focus and the Soviet people’s domestic problems in the aftermath of the Second World War. The country’s ideological, military, and imperial concerns abroad emphasized militarization over domestic revitalization. The Soviet people widely expected significant action from their government to remedy economic and political issues. The Soviet government nevertheless committed itself in focusing on outside concerns regardless of the harsh reality …

False Idol: The Memory Of Andrew Johnson And Reconstruction In Greeneville, Tennessee 1869-2022, Zachary A. Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The memory of Andrew Johnson in Greeneville has progressed through three phases. The first phase began during Johnson’s post-presidential career when he sought national office to demonstrate his vindication. After Johnson died the first phase continued through the efforts of his daughters and local Unionists who sought to strengthen the myth of monolithic Unionism and use Johnson to promote reconciliation and to shield the region from federal intervention in the racial hierarchy. The second phase in the construction of Johnson’s memory began in 1908 when Northerners began to unite with white Southerners in white supremacy. East Tennesseans then celebrated the …

Evaluating Bat Roost Abundance: A Comparison Of Drone-Acquired Thermal Imagery And Acoustic Estimates With Visual Observations, Karah Jaffe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Roosts provide an opportunity to census philopatric populations of bats. Comparing the efficacy of traditional methods with novel methods can provide guidance on the use of new technologies in the field. This project aims to compare the count efficacy of external emergence methodologies, i.e., drone-acquired thermal imagery, acoustic estimates, and visual counts. Surveys were conducted ten nights at two emergence sites and synchronized to compare counts. Acoustic estimates could not be established as there was a weak prediction of the linear relationship between root-mean-square pressure and emergence count; therefore, this method was removed from the comparative analysis. A linear mixed-effects …

Validation Of The 40 Hz Auditory Steady State Response As A Pharmacodynamic Biomarker Of Evoked Neural Synchrony, Muhammad Ummear Raza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Schizophrenia is a troubling and severe mental illness that is only incompletely treated by currently available drugs. New drug development is hindered by a scarcity of functionally relevant pharmacodynamic biomarkers that are translatable across preclinical and human subjects. Although psychosis is a major feature of schizophrenia, cognitive and negative symptoms determine the long-term functional outcomes for patients. Stimulus-evoked neural synchrony at gamma (~ 40 Hz) frequency plays an important role in the processing and integration of sensory information. Not surprisingly, schizophrenia patients show deficits in gamma oscillations. NMDA receptor (NMDAR) activation on fast-spiking parvalbumin-positive interneurons is deemed important for the …
