It shall be the object of this investigation to measure the hydrogen ion concentration in lead acetate solutions and to apply the measurements to the control of color in the preparation of chrome yellow pigments. Lead acetate solutions of high concentration, known as lead liquors, are used in the preparation of chrome yellows by precipitation with sodium dichromate. Since the color of the pigment is believed to be dependent on the hydrogen ion concentration of the lead acetate solution used, such a study is of interest to dry-color manufacturers and to users of chrome yellows. This thesis traces the development of the Negro in American literature from its origins in the spirituals through the flowering of the "New Negro" Renaissance of the early twentieth century. Arnaud opens by defining literature as the artistic record of a people's inner life and argues that Negro literary expression developed first through song, tracing the movement from oral spirituals through the early poetry of the enslaved and freed population toward increasingly sophisticated literary forms.

Jensen and Friedrich have outlined new methods for the preparation of acridine compounds. They have shown that the treatment of o-aminobensaldehyde with the halogen derivatives of nitrobenzene and with the corresponding derivatives of toluene would yield the corresponding diphenylamine derivatives. These diphenylamine derivatives split off water very easily to form acridine compounds. By this method they have prepared the 1(9)-nitro and 3(7)-nitroacridine, and the 1(9)-methyl and 3(7)-methylacridine. The general application of the reaction used in preparing these compounds has been examined, and it has been found that the reaction can be extended in two ways. The economic importance of Atropa Belladonna has long been recognized because of the valuable alkaloids which it contains. Belladonna belongs to the Solanaceae or Nightshade family, which is composed of about 1500 species, many of these also being of economic importance. At the academy of Agriculture in Klansenburg since 1916, two constant deviations from the normal variety of Atropa Belladonna L. have been grown. They are Atropa Belladonna var. flava and Atropa Belladonna var. intermediata. The alkaloidal content is higher than that of the normal variety. The Agricultural Census of the United States for 1920 shows that plums rank second to apples in value in comparison with the other orchard fruits, small fruits and grapes produced in South Dakota. There was an eighty-two percent increase in the value of all orchard fruits produced during the year 1919 over the year 1909.
