The curriculum of present day schools is the agency through which the educational system in a large part fulfills the function for which it was created. The early trend was to place the emphasis on how to teach instead of what to teach. Before 1920, the curriculum was considered more or less "fixed", and little time was devoted to research in curriculum content. In fact, less than 1500 courses of study had been published in the United States at that time.

There is comparatively little known about the mechanism of dehiscence in dry fruits of the angiosperms. A number of contributions have been made to the cytology of anther dehiscence and dehiscence of spore capsules, but the only research pertaining to dehiscence of fruits has been done by foreign workers; and little of that is more than gross observation. Therefore, aside from the problem's intrinsic interest it has the added feature of opening a relatively new line of study in this country.

Since the advent of cosmetics between thirty and forty thousand years ago their preparation, uses end effects have been a matter of frequent and nearly constant discussion and experimentation. In the words of Lillian H. Foster (1) quoted from "The American Perfumer": "As it (cosmetics) serves as a worthy commodity of commerce and as an adjunct to beauty, a double function combining the useful and the ornamental, should not the make-up box receive its due and be accorded recognition as a valued member of society?"

This study is concerned , first with the presentation of the historical background of business conditions in South Dakota , and second, with the composition of a general business activity index for South Dakota. The author is interested in analyzing and discussing the general conditions as the business cycles of the various series portray them. No attempt is made to forecast or predict future business activities in any occupation. The index gives only a historical picture for the period 1923-1937.

This is a continuation of a study made by Gabriel Lundy, Department of Agricultural Economics, South Dakota State College, on Mortgage Loans on Farm Real Estate in areas consisting of three townships in each of Haakon, Hyde, Clark, Brookings, and Turner counties. The previous studies cover the period 1910-1930. Even a most superficial study of the South Dakota dairy industry indicated its economic importance to the state. Dairying, though not of major importance, utilizes a relatively huge physical production plant, spread out on most every farm. It includes processing and marketing facilities, of which the creamery and cream station are most important. In 1935, dairying constituted one of the state's more stable industries, providing about 15.7 percent of the gross income of South Dakota farmers. It ranked second to wheat, which accounted for 18.7 percent of the total gross income. All cattle and calves, hogs, and cora are ranked …

Management Of County-Owned Lands In Northwestern South Dakota: With Special Reference To Leasing Procedure, Charles W. Loomer

A study of land ownership patterns in northwest South Dakota has revealed that, in 1936, eight counties owned approximately 787 thousand acres of tax-deed and school fund foreclosure land. This is only one indication of the vast amount of public ownership in this area. On the same date there were nearly 984 thousand acres of common school endowment lands, approximately 387 thousand acres of land belonging to public corporations, and some 328 thousand acres of Federal land. Total public ownership amounted to slightly less than two and a half million acres which is approximately 21 per cent of the estimated …

The purpose of this thesis is to determine the extent the relief status of the farm operator in South Dakota may be associated with various sizes of farms maintained. The author offers this particular study as one that has a decided bearing upon the relief situation in South Dakota 1934 to 1936 as that problem was decreased or augmented by the size of farm. The problem of relief, in the past discussed as poverty and pauperism, has been considered essentially a social problem. It is commonly known that several magnesium bromide ordinarily exists in the hexahydrated form, however very little mention has been made in the literature to the complexes which magnesium bromide forms with organic substances. The etherate has been studied by Evens and Rowly (1) and the free energy of magnesium bromide has been determined through the etherate by Scherer and Newton (2).

Soil Nutrient losses have followed closely in the paths of advancing frontiers in agriculture. Remedies for depletion as the result of overcropping were sought by George Washington, whose interest and investigation of soil nutrient losses probably represent the earliest attention given to land exploitation in the United States, which at the present time has become a problem of national concern. Soil losses have been attributed to a number of causes , among which are cropping, erosion, leaching, burning, and rapid oxidation of organic matter in the soil.
