An Improved Method For The Determination Of Crude Fiber And Nitrogen Extract Of Feeds, Robert Alvin Wilcox

The crude fiber method in use today was originated in Germany by Henneberg and Stohmann (1) about 85 years ago and is known as the Weende method after the name of their experiment station. Their method consists of boiling a dried and ether extracted sample (about 1 gram) for 30 minutes in 200 ml. of a 1.25o/o sodium hydroxide solution. The residue is filtered off and washed free of alkali with hot water in a Gooch crucible prepared with a treated asbestos mat, dried in a 100 degree C oven, weighed, ashed and reweighed. Although the performance of a device may be considered satisfactory at some voltage other than rated, this performance may be quite different from that intended. Incandescent lamps, heating appliances, and electric motors are common devices, the performances of which can be checked easily at various voltages.

The heel flies or ox-warble flies and their larvae, commonly called cattle grubs or warbles, are among the most troublesome and costly insect pests of livestock producers in South Dakota. These parasites attack cattle almost exclusively although they may occur at times in other domestic and in wild animals. Infestations in man have been recorded, but these cases are quite rare. This work deals only with the occurrence of the parasites in cattle.

Experimentation at South Dakota State College to determine the mutations in plant life resulting from the exposure of the seeds to X-radiation, made it desirable to be able to measure the quantity of radiation to which the seeds were exposed. Seeds being used in these tests are sorghums, castor beans, sunflowers, and safflowers. The tests will require a group of successive plant generations over a period of years. The purpose of this paper is to present a method by which the quantity of X-radiation, in roentgen units, can be measured.

Charles Clark (1811-1877) was Governor of Mississippi from November 16, 1863 until May 22, 1865.

Following Mississippi's secession from the United States in early 1861, Clark was appointed as a brigadier general in the Mississippi 1st Corps, which later entered the Confederate States Army. and promoted to the rank of major general of Mississippi State Troops in 1863. Clark was severely wounded and captured at the Battle of Baton Rouge.

On November 16, 1863, Clark was inaugurated as governor of Mississippi under Confederate auspices. He served in this capacity until June 13, 1865, when he was forcibly removed from office …
