Itaconic Acid Derivatives Of Sulfanilamide And Sulfone, Malcolm J. Thompson

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Maters degree in chemistry in 1952, reports the synthesis and characterization of itaconic acid derivatives of sulfanilamide and amino phenyl sulfone compounds. The research describes reaction procedures and the isolation and purification of a series of novel chemical compounds, with experimental data including melting points, percent yields, elemental analysis, and molecular weights reported for numerous derivatives. The thesis presents conclusions regarding the chemical properties and reactivity of the synthesized compounds.

Strains of corn differ in their ability to germinate at low temperatures. This is of critical importance in the northern areas of the Corn Belt. Frequently, the early part of the growing season is accompanied by cool temperatures and corn is planted while the soil is still cold. These conditions reduce the stands of corn by slowing up the physiological activity to kernel and making it more vulnerable to attack by soil pathogens.

The Spieker Circle And Certain Related Configurations, Berthola Elmo Lumzy

This thesis, presented to the Department of Mathematics at Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in 1952, examines the Spieker circle, a circle inscribed in the median triangle of a given triangle, and extends its defining properties to related geometric configurations. Lumzy first establishes a series of analogies between the Spieker circle and the nine-point circle, demonstrating parallel relationships involving radius, center, harmonic conjugates, and homothetic centers relative to the incenter, median point, and Nagel point of a triangle.

Many conflicting reports have been given in the literature concerning the effect of various factors on the rate of reversal of figure and ground in reversible perspective. Flugel (7, 8) suggested that changes in eye movement increased the number of reversals. He thought that fixation on one part of the figure could lead to S’s interpretation of this part as being "nearer” the observer and that changes in perspective were induced by changing the fixation point. Donahue (5) found that there was a rhythm in the reversals but the shift in the fixation point was not in rhythm with the …

The chemical analysis of atmospheric dust is of interest to two major groups, namely—the workers in industrial hygiene and the workers in the air cleaning and ventilating industries. The industrial hygienists, who are concerned with the prevention of occupational diseases and the maintenance of the health of industrial workers on a high level, are mainly interested in the concentration of irritating dusts and allergy-producing dusts that would obviously affect the health or comfort of industrial workers. The breed association are continuously confronted with the problem of properly identifying animals for registration. The method of identifying the broken color breeds, such as Guernseys, Holsteins, and Ayrshires, is by a sketch of the color patterns which accompanies the application for registration. This has been fairly successful, but due to the poor drawing ability of the applicant approximately twenty percent of animal markings and sketch do not resemble each other to establish identity. Woody plants have become established upon millions of acres of range land in the United States during the past 50 years. Because of the undesirability of many species, various methods for their control have been investigated extensively during the past few years. Many species can be controlled by foliage sprays with modern hericides, while others do not respond to this method of application but may be eliminated by basal trunk treatments with herbicides. At present about 68,000 acres of land are under irrigation in South Dakota but plans have been developed for a vast expansion of irrigation in the state. When the new projects, planned by the Bureau of Reclamation, are completed South Dakota will have over one million acres of irrigable land. This new development will be in a climatic zone somewhat different that that in which other projects have been developed and consequently may require modifications in production programs and crop rotations.

The American farmer has made tremen4ous improvements in his productive capacity and ability since the Colonial period. These improvements have been taking place at a constantly accelerating rate. Much of this improvement has been due to increased specialization. The growth of urban population is an indicator of the rapid development of specialization. During Colonial times, at least nine-tenths of the population was engaged in farming, and as late as 1870, half of all workers were s till engaged in agriculture. The hollow cathode glow was discovered by Puschen in 1916. He recognized its value as a source for general high resolution spectroscopy and did considerable work with it. Since his original work, many modifications in the details of the hollow cathode source have been made, but the essential discharge conditions as first found by Paschen remain unchanged. Sculer's change in the experimental arrangement to permit drastic cooling is the most important modifications. He was first to apply the source intensively to the study of hyperfine structures. The Schuller type source has contributed much to the rapid development of hyperfine structures.

The number of female swine which do not settle in producer's herds, both purebred and commercial, is thought to be at least 10%. Controlled studies at experimental stations indicate that this figure may be to low. Unconfirmed reports from several mid-west experimental stations indicate that between 20 and 30% of the female swine bred to farrow in the spring of 1950 failed to farrow. The condensation of phenols with phthalic anhydride to give acid-base indicators is well known. The preparation of phenolphthalein was first reported by Baeyer in 1871 (1) using concentrated sulfuric acid as the catalyst. Baeyer reported the successful use of sulfuric chloride as the catalyst for the preparation of phenolphthalein in 1880 (2). Early reports of the condensation of resorcinol (3), p-chlorophenol(4) and o-cresol (5) with phthalic anhydride have also been made. The reaction of phenols with coumarin (11), with diphenic acid anhydride (8) and with succinic anhydride (6) to form compounds comparable in structure to the phthaleins has been reported. …
