The economy of much of our Great Plains region depends upon the efficiency with which we use its most important crop--grass. Since over 75 percent of the feed of all beef cattle and sheep is grass, anything that can be done to increase its value as feed for livestock is of tremendous importance to the wealth and economy of the nation. Body conformation is associated with function among all classes of livestock. Dairy cattle type deals with characteristics indicating ability to produce milk and butterfat economically along with breed character and other values of an aesthetic nature. In order to have economical milk and butterfat production, the dairy cow should possess that type of body conformation which is able to withstand the rigors of disease, reproduction and year after year milk production. A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

In recent years great strides have been made towards improving the quality and strength of both concrete and steel. Reliable concrete with a compressive strength of 5000 to 12,000 psi and suitable steel with a tensile strength of over 200,000 psi can be obtained. If high strength concrete and high strength steel can be used together satisfactorily a substantial reduction in materials will result. This is partly due to the fact that the materials are stronger and partly due to the fact that dead load is reduced. In designing a plain reinforced concrete beam it is assumed that about one-third …

The soils of South Dakota are generally very fertile in their virgin condition. Through the years of cropping this fertility has been decropped through crop removal, soil erosion and other factors, until at the present time lack of soil fertility is showing up more and more as a limiting factor in crop growth in South Dakota. The stable isotopes of naturally occurring Germanium may emit slightly different frequencies, resulting in a hyperfine structure of the spectrum lines. An investigation of the isotopes shifts in the spectra of Ge I and Ge II has been made, and the methods and results of this investigation are presented in this paper.

In an attempt to utilize the full growing season and obtain greater yields , many farmers are planting late varieties of corn which require a longer growing season than often exists in South Dakota. Such late maturing varieties are more likely to be damaged by frost than the earlier maturing ones. Since 1940, early frosts have resulted in large amounts of soft corn in eastern South Dakota in five out of eleven years.

The selection for certain inherited characteristics war practiced approximately 2000 years before the Christian Era. Jacob (Genesis 30:28-43) was given all the speckled cattle in his master’s herd for being herdsman. In a few years, by selecting for the spotting factor, only speckled cattle remained in the herd. Selection was the first tool for segregating definite characteristics. As a means of more rapid improvement artificial insemination was practiced by an Arabian chieftain as early as 1322 A. D. (35). The proper public sanitation on regard to sewage disposal and obtaining a satisfactory domestic water supply is a problem which confronts many of the smaller cities and towns in the upper Great Plains Area. Volga, South Dakota, is very representative of this problem, in size of population, wealth, and topography. Dehiscence is the process of splitting-open which id found in certain dry fruits, sporangia, and other containers. These dry fruits cane be classified into two main groups, vis., those composed of a single carpel and those made up up of several carpels united to form a compound pistil. It is the former with which we deal in this thesis, The former group can be further subdivided into fruits which dehisce down one side and those which open on opposite sides. Since 1965, selenium has been recognized as the toxicant naturally present in certain foodstuffs which cause the malady of livestock known as "alkali disease". Although selenium is present in very small amounts in plants and in even smaller amounts in soils, feeding of seleniferous forage caused serious losses in livestock in many areas of the Great Plains.

Comparatively little specific breeding for drought resistance has been done owing primarily to the complex nature of the reaction to drought. Plant breeders have searched for a long time to find some morphological or physiological character that could be associated with drought resistance. If such a character should be found, it would greatly facilitate selections of plant material superior in his respect. Efforts in this study have been directed toward establishing a relationship between the intensity of plant color and drought reaction.
