Much has been written about General William T. Sherman. His name appears in nearly every general account of the Civil War. But, after a careful examination of the field it has been found that one aspect of his career, namely, his role as Commanding General of the Military Division of the Mississippi, has been neglected. In part, this might have been expected. Since much of his work was of such a nature as to cause antipathy in a large portion of the present United States, it is understandable that Southerners might hesitate to write on it.

The purpose of the study undertaken here is to determine the extent to which four biographical factors could be used to predict success in Air Force Career Counseling courses. The biographical factors are (1) age, (2) amount of education, (3) number of years in the Air Force and (4) number of years since the individual last attended school. The criteria used to measure the success are the test score results obtained in the Air Force Career Counseling Course taught at the University of Denver during 1952.

The occurrence of selenium in certain soils of the United States and its detrimental effect upon livestock pastured on or fed forage from these areas has been well established. Selenium poisoning will not be reviewed here as several excellent reviews have been published (1, 2, 3). Studies on the metabolism of selenium by Sac-charomyces cerevisiae have been reported by Potter and Elvehjem (4), Lardy and Moxon (5), and Fels and Cheldelin (6, 7, 8). Guara coccines, a member of the evening primrose family, is suitable for a study of epigyny in that the flower has a long promethium with the sepals, petals, and stamens are discreate, and the sepals are fused to each other along their margins, but not to other floral parts. Farmers and ranchers are becoming more interested each year in supplemental irrigation, particularly where water sources such as permanent streams, rivers and underground aquifers are available. Many of these waters are of doubtful quality and if used for irrigation along with improper management could inducement unfavorable soil conditions, both chemical and physical. Western United States has numerous examples of irrigation projects that have failed because if the use of waters of inferior quality. Antioxidants play a very important p rt in many chemical industries in protecting petroleum products, rubber, foodstuffs, resins, fats, oils, soaps, and a variety of chemicals from atmospheric oxidation during their manufacture, storage, and use. Phenolic compounds comprise one of the important groups of antioxidants and within this group are the hindered phenols, many of which are very efficient oxidation inhibitors. Hindered phenols are monohydric phenols whose two ortho-positions are occupied by tertiary butyl or larger groups thus hindering the phenolic properties of the compound. They are insoluble (132) in aqueous or alcoholic alkali solutions and will not respond to …

The induction or true breeding variants with unchanged chromosome member in a variety of Sorghum vulgare Pers. was reported by Franske and Rosa (5). These variants resulted from colchicina treatment of seedlings in a variety which was we known to breed true. The authors proposed that variant plants lmay have originated from a haploid chromosome complement formed bysomatic reduction, which was later restored to the diploid condition. Dehiscence is the processs of opening in anthers. spore cases and dry fruits. The dry fruit described here is capsule. When one speaks of capsule dehiscence, four types are considered: (1) pericidal dehiscence - by pores at the species of carpels; (2) loculicidal dehiscence - lengthwise along the middle of each carpel; (3) septicidal dehiscence - lengthwise along the lines of adjoining carpels; and (4) circcuascissile dehiscence - along a circular line perpendicular to the main axis. It is the first type of dehiscence with which this study is concerned.

The major study was to discover the general character of fourteen selected groups from the high-school seniors of South Dakota who took the ACE tests and filled in the personal data in the Fall of 1952. Eleven of these groups were occupations; one group was those who indicated college academic majors; one group was made up of those boys and girls who put in some form of military service as their "tentative occupational choice," and the final one was composed of those boys and girls who gave no vocational choice. The problem stated as a broad social question is : Has the Farm Ownership loan program been achieving its objectives of reducing farm tenancy and promoting security of tenure through family farm ownership? Available evidence indicates that the program may not have been very effective in reducing farm tenancy either nationally or in a high-tenancy area such as South Dakota where 53 percent of the farmers were tenants in 1940 .
