Arsenic (As) atomic number 33, atomic weight 74.91, is usually classed as a nonmetal or metalloid, although in the pure state it forms a steel grey metallic crystal and is referred to as metallic arsenic. Only one stable isotope is known at the present time, in spite of its fractional atomic weight. However, the number of allotropic forms and their properties seem to be undecided among many authors (1).“Arsenic” was known in the pre-Christian era, but as such was not the pure element. Instead it consisted of the sulfides of arsenic: realgar (As4S4) and orpiment (As2S3). These sulfides were encountered …

The use of fertilizer is rapidly becoming an essential part of the soil management program of eastern South Dakota. Commercial fertilizer should be used to help correct the plant food deficiencies that normally occur under our best soil management systems. At the present time, most South Dakota soils have the capacity to supply all the essential elements required for general crop production except nitrogen and phosphorus. These two elements are required in large amounts by crops and as a consequence of our extensive type of farming are now deficient in many of the soils. Potassium is also required in large …

The wealth of scientific data that are available on the subject of drought gives an indication of the interest that this problem has prompted in investigators. It is not the purpose of this paper to review all available material, but several pertinent aspects will be considered. The drought chamber was an important innovation in the study of plant reactions to conditions of high temperature, low relative humidity, and low soil moisture. Methionine was discovered in 1922 by Mueller (33) and was first known as Mueller’s acid. In 1928 Barger and Coyne (6) found that it was a methylated sulfur compound known as alpha-amino-gamma-methyl thio-butryic acid and later gave it the present shorter name of methionine. Rose and his associates (34) have shown that it is the essential sulfur amino acid and not cysteine as was formerly thought. Infiltration, as defined by Horton, an internationally recognized authority on hydrology, is the process involved when water soaks into the ground. In other words, infiltration refers to that process whereby winter enters the environment of the soil through the immediate surface. It is not synonymous with percolation. The latter refers to the movement of water into the soil. It is true that percolation is generally involved in the process of infiltration, but this is not necessarily the case. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, approximately 19 per cent of the cash farm income of South Dakota is obtained from the marketing of hogs. The successful swine producer’s primary objective is to receive the greatest possible financial return for his investment and labor. Auction sales are an important marketing medium for livestock in this country today. This method of selling is not a new or novel one. The selling of livestock through auctions was probably adapted from Great Britain, and first used in this country in the early nineteenth century. These sales were most often held to dispose of imported and domestic breeding stock. The first regularly scheduled auction sale with publicly consigned merchandise was established at Union, Iowa in 1904. From this beginning the number of livestock auctions increased, especially after 1930. This increase was particularly rapid in the twelve Western States …

Although Foucault did considerable work on the behavior of rotating bodies, the Foucault gyroscope or gyroscopic compass appears to have been suggested by Lord Kelvin in 1883. Essentially this is a rotating body suspended with its axis of spin free to turn in a horizontal plane. The first commercial gyrocompass, the Anschuetz-Kaempfe model, was patented in 1908. It was followed in 1911 by the Sperry gyrocompass. These two are the most important commercial gyrocompasses although several improvements and modifications have been patented. The Anschuetz compass used mercury to suspend the direction-seeking element. This element contained three rotors, the main north-seeking …

Growth stimulation in domestic animals due to dietary supplementations of antibiotics has received a great deal of attention in the last few years. Moore and co-workers in 1946 (35) observed that the addition of streptomycin to the diet of chicks led to increased growth responses and in 1948 Harned et al. (17) administered aureomycin to chicks and he also noted an increased growth rate. Little significance was attached to these discoveries and the present interest in antibiotics as feed supplements is the result of investigations by Stokstad and co-workers in 1949 (40) with cultures of Streptomyces griseus and Streptomyces aureofaciens …

The relationship between rate and efficiency of gain, and the environmental factors affecting them, are of major importance in a selection program. Selection within recent years has tended to be mainly for improvement of breed type. As a result of this selection, improvement in type has taken place in the beef breeds, but a comparable improvement in performance does not seem to have occurred. It then seems likely that is breeders in the future intend to improve the performance of the beef breeds, they cannot do it by selection for type alone. Cattle feeders and ranchers of South Dakota winter and fatten a great number of cattle on harvested grasses and legumes. The forages are stored for winter feeding both as hay and as silage. Alfalfa is one of the important crops in both the eastern and western portions of the state. The use of alfalfa, particularly as silage, in cattle feeding is increasing. The most important single factor in successful shelter-belt establishment in the Northern Great Plains is elimination of weed and grass competition. While removal if competing vegetation between the tree rows can readily be accomplished with machinery, removal of such vegetation in the tree rows is a different problem. Hand hoeing is effective, but involves a great deal of time and labor. No mechanical means of removing competing vegetation from the row has proven entirely satisfactory.

There are many types of detectors of radioactive rays, such as Geiger Counters, ionization chambers, photographic emulsions, electroscopes, and cloud chambers. Many of these give only information such as the amount of radiation or the minimum energy of the rays because the information is registered as a change in voltage or a “count”. Outstanding among the different kinds of detectors is the type commonly called “cloud chambers”. During the summer of 1953, 168,000 acres of small grain were sprayed with 2.4-D by airplane in South Dakota. Of this amount 120,000 acres were wheat. Approximately the same number of acres were sprayed in the previous years. Several cases of damage to crops following serial application of 2.4-D have been reported. In most cases, the damage resulted from an application of an ester of 2.4-D in oil. Since very little research data concerning such applications were available, it seemed that present recommendations should be reviewed critically in order to determine if they are adapted to serial application.
