Effects Of Dieldrin On Reproduction Of Penned Hen Pheasants, Thomas Donald Atkins

Pen studies to determine the effects of dieldrin on reproduction of the hen pheasant were conducted for two breeding seasons, Hen pheasants were caged individually and administered encapsulated dieldrin at weekly intervals. The first season, treatment levels were 0, 2 or 4 mg of dieldrin per hen per week. Hens receiving 4 mg weighed more and laid heavier eggs than the controls. However, these differences were not attributed to the effects of dieldrin, but to the condition of the hens when first treated. Hatchability of eggs from the 2 mg group was significantly higher for an undetermined reason. Feed consumption, …

A dicarbonyl compound, 2, 3-butanedione, commonly referred to as diacetyl or biacetyl, is considered by many to be-an important flavor constituent of butter and butter cultures. Milk fat has no natural diacetyl content and in the past the diacetyl found in butter resulted from bacterial fermentation of the cream before churning. In recent years commercial lactic cultures have been used, which are added to the fat granules before ''working" of the butter. Bacterial cultures used by the dairy industry generally consist of a mixture of two streptococcus types. A homofermentative type produces primarily lactic acid from the lactose of milk. …

At the South Dakota State University Dairy Science Department, a challenging work is being conducted to develop a new spread type· dairy product which is made almost entirely of dairy ingredients. It contains about 40% fat, 6% protein, 40% water, and 1.9% salts. Among the problems which faced the workers on this project were the process induced changes in the protein and the water holding capacity, which are interlinked. The problem of water holding capacity is increased by the high water content of the product compared with butter, which contains about 16% water. Maintaining the stability of the fat emulsion …

Through the study of environmental control of plant growth, it has become known that external factors control the internal hormonal factors. The time and amount of hormone produced control the plant growth. It therefore has become of interest, since the discovery of growth regulators, to think about artificial application of hormones and antihormones. The selection, timing and amount of hormone applied are very important. The desired result is an alteration of the life cycle of the plant in such a manner that an increase in yield is achieved.

The purpose of this study is to determine combinations of agricultural resources and enterprises required to obtain specified farm income levels in Faulk County, South Dakota. The income level of the farmer in Faulk County depends on the quantity and quality of the resources controlled and the efficiency achieved in utilizing these resources. The level of farm income in Faulk County is often inadequate to meet both the requirements of the farm firm and the needs or desires of the operator and his family. Many farmers are making adjustments to increase their income levels.

There is a need to find a high protein food that is inexpensive and yet contains all the essential amino acids. So far there has been small scale attempts made by a handful of companies to utilize some type of high protein product. Soybean seemed to be a likely possibility to fulfill these qualifications. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of using a programed textbook and multiple tests in the teaching of remedial grammar at South Dakota State University. During the Fall Semester of 1965 and again during the Fall Semester of 1966, programing was used to help incoming freshmen deficient in English eliminate their major weaknesses in understanding grammar and in recognizing basic principles of usage and punctuation. In assessing the effectiveness of these presentations, the results of various testing instruments used in each presentation were studied. Herman Melville and Henry David Thoreau are two of the most original American authors who appeared during the first half of the nineteenth century. Although the writings of both Melville and Thoreau have been examined extensively in scholarship, little has been done in the way of attempting a comparison of their work. In fact, Melville and Thoreau was an avowed member of the Transcendentalist movement, which Melville openly opposed.1 There are, indeed, many dissimilarities between the two writers. Thoreau belonged to the Concord group of authors, while Melville did not. Melville was primarily a novelist while Thoreau’s prose works were …

Lipid Mobilization In Beef And Rabbits As Affected By Marketing-Induced Stress Or Acth-Induced Stress, John R. Romans

The effect of stress on intramuscular and plasma lipids was studied in rabbits and beef. Nine mature rabbits were subjected to a constant infusion of ACTH (1.5 mU./min./kg.). Four rabbits completed a 12 hour treatment and two completed an 11-hour treatment. The remaining three rabbits survived treatments of 6, 4, and 2 hours. Blood samples taken at 0, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours or immediately upon death if it occurred before 12 hours. Initial and final muscle biopsies were taken from the longissimus dorsi directly posterior to the 13th rib on right and left sides, respectively. The stress …

The United States Census Bureau usually divides the population of any large geographical area into three broad categories – urban, rural farm and rural non-farm. Demographers have performed much investigation in the former two areas; however, the research relative to the rural non-farm population segment lacks the intensity that characterizes investigations of the urban and rural farm populations. Recently, there has been an awareness of this fact and the North Central Regional Committee on Community Adjustment to Social Change has initiated a large scale investigation of the changes and adjustments that are taking place within the communities of the region. …

The Flandreau Indian High School had its origin as an Indian Mission School in 1871, at Flandreau, South Dakota. Following the purchase of the property by the United States government in 1883, the institution became a boarding school with an initial student body of ninety-eight Indian students. Gradually, the school has developed and expanded its physical facilities until today there are approximately 600 students in grades 9-12 attending the Flandreau High School. The school draws its enrollment from a five state area: Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The students live in the dormitories on campus and return …

To understand more fully the reasons for this Follow-up Study of Guidance and Counseling Graduates from South Dakota State University from 1957 to 1966, one must start looking at the history and development of the Guidance and Counseling program. The first guidance course offered at South Dakota State University was in 1928. The course was Vocational Guidance, and it dealt with the need for vocational guidance, duties of vocational counselors, methods of collection, preparing, and using occupational information for counseling, and vocational guidance in the small high school.
