Since the number of rivers available has remained constant, a need has been created to optimize the utilization. In order to optimize, the effects on the physical properties of the river caused by changes in utilization must be determined. Quantity, the amount of water flowing in the river, along with quality, the value of the water for further utilization, are physical properties of the river. South Dakota is located in a transition zone between the winter wheat area to the south and the spring wheat area to the north. The summers seem to be too warm to produce the later maturing spring wheat of good test weight and of good milling quality that is in demand by consumers. Yet South Dakota remains primarily a spring wheat state because varieties and farming practices have not yet been perfected enough to overcome the problem of winter killing of winter wheat. Many studies have been conducted throughout the world to determine the identity of Odonata found in a certain locality. In the United States individual workers have, in their own states, conducted surveys to determine what species were present. South Dakota was one of the few states in which such a survey had never been carried out. Thus South Dakota represented a missing link" in the formal complex of the United States Odonatan fauna. The present study was undertaken to determine what species, in the adult stage, were present and the abundance of each in east-central South Dakota.

This study is directed towards the existing pattern of operation typical on many farms in the Great Plains. It does not consider radical innovations in technology, but is based on the suitability of adoption of irrigation into existing farm plans with figures based on fanning operations and irrigation systems which have been employed in progressive agriculture under both dryland and irrigated conditions. The study does not anticipate the adoption of revolutionary, specialized crops, but relies on attained yields for dryland and projected yields with irrigation of crops presently being grown. The Current Attitudes Of South Dakota State University Full-Time Undergraduate Students Toward Basic Course Requirements, Jay E. Dirksen

The survey method utilizing the questionnaire was employed in determining current attitudes toward basic course requirements for graduation. Basic courses required for graduation, for all undergraduate degrees at South Dakota State University, are English,, physical education, and speech. Four hundred eighty-six students were selected according to sex, college and class by using the stratified random sample method. Four hundred and three, or 82.92 percent, of those students who received questionnaires returned completed questionnaires. Results of the survey showed that 84.86 percent of the students returning questionnaires felt that there are subject areas where there should be basic course requirements for …

Historically the interest in organic derivatives of selenium has been primarily centered on selenium analogs of sulfur compounds, the selenium analogs of the sulfur-containing amino acids. Experimental studies of the metabo1ism of seleno-organic compounds have been limited to a large extent by their unavailability. Dimethyl selenide is the only organic selenium compound that has been identified as an exhalation product from a laboratory animal injected with an inorganic form of· selenium. The quantity factor is of prime importance to the breeder, producer, processor and consumer. Extensive exploration of techniques to increase the relative yield of lean meat in the carcass has been conducted by animal breeders and livestock production personnel. Many solutions exist for the laminar boundary-layer flow of Newtonian fluids. This is verified in literature by Schlichting. However, some fluids do not obey the Newtonian postulate that the stress tensor is directly proportional to the rate of deformation tensor. It is as likely, in fact, that non-Newtonian fluids could be pumped into an industrial complex as the more common Newtonian fluids. This is partly due to the growing use of synthetics and petroleum products in modern day living. The use of non-Newtonian fluids, however, does not have to be limited to problems of internal flow. The objectives of the research presented herein were to continue the previous studies and to evaluate the treatment effects of the intercepting trench. This investigation afforded sufficient time after the construction of the trench for the entire landfill area to reflect the influence of the trench. The taxonomy of the anaerobic bacteria known as diphtheroids is a subject of study by the Subgroup on Taxonomy of Microaerophilic Actinomycetes, an authorized Subgroup of the Subcommittee on Taxonomy of the Actinomycetales of the International Committee on Nomenclature of Bacteria, International Association of Microbiological Societies. Dr. Gordon Robertstad, a member of this committee, has stimulated a series of studies on these organisms. At present, the species differentiation coupled with genus differentiation among anaerobic diphtheroids is in a state of flux. The purpose of this study was to establish norms for the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test for South Dakota girls in grades seven through ten and to compare their scores with those of national girls. One school was selected to represent each region or section of the South Dakota High School Activities' Association. The number selected from each school was in proportion to the school's enrollment. The AAHPER Youth Fitness Test was administered to one thousand South Dakota girls in grades seven through ten. Norms were established by computing every fifth percentile. Early attempts to isolate polyribosomes from barley tissue by the procedure of Lin and Key were unsuccessful. When analyzed by sucrose gradient centrifugation such preparations showed a particle distribution predominately in the monomer region of the gradient similar to data of Srivastava and Arglebe . Similar difficulties were also encountered with certain animal tissues. They were resolved by the addition of higher levels of KC1 to the extraction medium than used initially by Wettstein. The main objective of this research was to determine the effect of slotted holes on the slip coefficient of high-strength bolted connections. Butt joints were used for the control specimens as well as for the test-specimens. The enclosed ply of the joint served as the pulling element and had standard round holes with a hole diameter 1/16-inch greater than the bolt diameter. The outer plies contained the slotted holes either parallel or perpendicular to the load. The distribution, excretion, and metabolism of dieldrin-c14 in hen pheasants were studied. Eighteen laying hen pheasants were administered a gelatin capsule containing 1. 4 mg of dieldrin labelled with 5. 5 microcuries of carbon-14. Groups of three birds were killed at intervals of 2, 6, and 12 hours, and 3, 6, and 35 days following treatment. Concentrations of dieldrin residues in brain, fat, heart, liver, muscle, ovary, eggs, and feces were determined by gas chromatography and liquid scintillation counting. Dieldrin residues were present in tissues of one bird killed 2 hours after treatment. The highest average level of residues occurred …

Food habits of whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the northern Black Hills were studied during fall and winter 1966067 and 1967-68 and also during summer 1967. Summer study was confined to aspen (Populus tremuloides) areas and involved stomach analysis and a pasture study. Fall and winter food habits were determined by stomach analysis only. Associated aspen vegetation was sampled to find a representative site for construction of a 0.7 acre enclosure. Food habits of bigmouth buffalo fry, subadults, and adults were studied in lake Poinsett, South Dakota, from January to November, 1968. Fifty-six fry fed primarily (75.0% by volume) on benthic organisms. Four hundred fifty-five subadults and adults fed entirely on plankton. Daphnia pulex adults comprised 83.7 to 96.7% of the food items during periods of ice cover (January to April). Daphnia pulex adults and juveniles comprised 68.5% by volume and cyclopoid copepods 29.7%^ of the diet from April to July. Summer (July to October) samples showed ingestion of D. pulex adults and juveniles (36.9%), Anacystis sp. (22.3%), and Daphnia galeata …

In order to be profitable, a dairy herb must have good heifers to meet replacement needs. According to USDA (51), these needs are substantial because 25% of the cows in an average herd must be replaced each year as they no longer return a profit. Meeting these herd replacement needs has long been a serious problem of the dairyman. Nation-wide calf loss estimates ranged between 8 and 25% with an estimated annual loss to the industry of $50 million (10). The purpose of this investigation was to study relevant physiological events prior to and during ammonia toxicity. Blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) was utilized to monitor progression and intensity of toxicity. Blood pH, PC02 and P02 were measured to determine effects of ammonia toxicity on acid base balance. Total serum cholesterol was also determined. Steroid hormones and cholesterol can be synthesized from active acetate, according to Oser (1965). It was hoped that any gross changes in steroid concentrations would be reflected in a total serum cholesterol change. Juhasz (1962) found that blood cholesterol increases during starvation paralleled those of blood urea-nitrogen. He …

Two experiments were conducted to determine the interrelationships between various dietary calcium and phosphorus levels and acid-base-forming effects of the diet concerning feedlot performance and ovine phosphatic urolithiasis. Another experiment involved the interrelationships between calcium, phosphorus and potassium. All lambs used in these experiments were Texas feeder lambs of mixed breeding weighing approximately 27-30 kg. In experiment I, the treatment variables incorporated into an all concentrate, corn-soybean meal diet included 0.28 and 0.55% phosphorus, 0.14 and 0.28%-calcium and O and 2% sodium bicarbonate in a factorial design.
