Bionomics Of Mallophaga Of Sharp-Tailed Grouse In South Dakota, Major L. Boddicker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ecologies of chewing lice (Insecta:Mallophaga) which parasitize sharp-tailed grouse, Pedioecetes phasianellus, were studied in southwestern South Dakota from 1964 to 1967. Five hundred twenty-eight hens, cocks and chicks were collected and examined for louse damage. Louse populations were monitored each month from December, 1964, to September, 1967. Five louse species which infested grouse in the study area were Goniodes nebraskensis Carriker, Amyrsidea megalosoma Overgaard, Lagopoecus perplexus Kellogg and Chapman, Goniocotes chrysocephalus and Lipeurus maculosis Clay. Goniodes nebraskensis fed on feather parts and skin debris and was found to have seasonally fluctuating populations. Cocks carried peak populations of 250 lice/host …

The Role Of Rainfall Impact And Surface Flow In Soil Detachment And Transport, Robert Alan Young Jan 1972

The Role Of Rainfall Impact And Surface Flow In Soil Detachment And Transport, Robert Alan Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil erosion caused by rainfall is a very complex physical process. To evaluate the mechanism of erosion so that an assessment can be made of the extent to which it may be controlled necessarily begins with an understanding of the basic fundamental factors involved. The purpose of this study involves the development of an insight of the relative importance of the roles played by various contributors to the erosion process. Particular emphasis is placed on the contribution of rainfall detached soil to total soil loss. Three soil types, Barnes loam, Crofton silt loam and Central sandy loam, were prepared with …

A Simulation Of Sediment Deposit In Open Channels, Tsan-Wen Wang Jan 1972

A Simulation Of Sediment Deposit In Open Channels, Tsan-Wen Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, two mathematical models have been developed to simulate sediment deposition in open-channel flow; a model based on three characteristic equations and a model based on two characteristic equations. A set of three partial differential equations for one dimensional transient flow with homogeneous density was provided to explain the mechanics of the phenomenon. By the method of characteristics, three partial differential equations were transformed into a set of three ordinary differential equations or a set of two ordinary differential equations by simplification in which the change of sediment layer thickness with respect to distance was assumed to be …

Physiological Regulation Of Cyclic Flowering In Flax, Aurora Salazar Hovland Jan 1972

Physiological Regulation Of Cyclic Flowering In Flax, Aurora Salazar Hovland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The flowering pattern of flax (Linum usitatissimum, L.) is cyclic in nature with periods of blossoming separated by periods of rest. To study the regulation of flowering cycles, four experiments were conducted. The first two dealt with nutritional aspects of cyclic flowering by imposing environmental stresses which conceivably might regulate flowering pattern nutritionally. The third and fourth experiments dealt with regulation from hormonal systems and included in vitro regulation of bud growth by growth regulators as well as characterization of endogenous hormonal systems by fluorimetry and bioassays. In the first experiment, the effects of light intensity, temperature, nitrogen and defoliation …

Each county in South Dakota was employed as the unit of analysis, and census …

Major Themes In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., June A. Anderson Jan 1972

Major Themes In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., June A. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. has written six novels which explore some of the most important problems confronting man in contemporary society. Little significant criticism has been written on Kurt Vonnegut since he began writing in 1949. Recently, however, he has experienced an increasing popularity with readers and critics who have found his novels successful probings into modern man’s feelings of alienation in a world which he perceives as increasingly absurd. This thesis is an analysis of Kurt Vonnegut’s use of black humor, satire and science fiction devices in his exploration of four major themes occurring throughout his novels: criticisms of science, …

Carlyle's Literature Of Heroism And Its Contemporary Model--Mao, Kang-I Eleanor Chang Jan 1972

Carlyle's Literature Of Heroism And Its Contemporary Model--Mao, Kang-I Eleanor Chang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today when millions of Chinese people are shouting, "Long Live Chairman Mao” and waving their red books with flaming, uncontrollable enthusiasm, one wonders whether the worship is genuine, and whether this is the kind of worship which Carlyle means. However, the main emphasis of this thesis is on Carlyle's concept of heroism. Carlyle was greatly obsessed with the heroic ideal. After he was disappointed with the lack of modern heroes in America, he longed for a heroic nation to admire. Thus Carlyle, after a long pilgrimage became the good friend of Germany and the worshiper of German great men. He …

The Distribution Of Primitive Roots In Fields Of Order P², Marilyn Sol Gerjets Jan 1972

The Distribution Of Primitive Roots In Fields Of Order P², Marilyn Sol Gerjets

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout this paper, small case Latin letters, with the exception of i which has its usual mathematical meaning, will denote rational integers where we let Z represent the set of all rational integers. We call µ = a + bi a Gaussian integer iff a and b are rational integers and we denote the set of all Gaussian integers by Z(i). The set of Gaussian integers can be represented geometrically by ·the set of lattice points in a Cartesian coordinate system whose horizontal and vertical grid lines are one unit apart. Since µ = a + bi is a complex …

An Experimental Study Of No-Screen Bump Exposures For Short Density Range Reflection Copy, Stephen E. Horwood Jan 1972

An Experimental Study Of No-Screen Bump Exposures For Short Density Range Reflection Copy, Stephen E. Horwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to investigate a system of no-screen bump or highlight exposure (so-called because it is the highlight area of the negative that is affected) based on logarithmic densities and opacity tables. The system under investigation used in shooting the copy. R. E. Maurer says that 11 a contact screen is a light modulator that is placed in contact with the halftone emulsion. The small, vignetted dots in the photographic screen absorb the exposing light selectively so that the proper intensity distribution is produced in the halftone emulsion." The second exposure is the flash, which …

Pheasant Production Using Wild Cocks And Penned Game-Farm Hens, Michael R. Grode Jan 1972

Pheasant Production Using Wild Cocks And Penned Game-Farm Hens, Michael R. Grode

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheasant production using free-flying wild cooks and penned game-farm hens was evaluated during 1971. Hens were placed in 0.5-acre pens to compare production at density levels of 10, 20, and 40 hens per acre. Wild cooks entered the 0.5-acre pens the day following introduction of the game-farm hens. The greatest numbers of cooks were observed in the pens with the highest density of hens. Censusing in mid-March indicated a population of 12 to 15 wild cooks in the vicinity of the study pens. A known mortality of 31 hens occurred and percentage mortality was similar at each density level. Pulling …

Factors Influencing Irregular Compaction Curves, Ching- Yee Hsu Jan 1972

Factors Influencing Irregular Compaction Curves, Ching- Yee Hsu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The important influences of temperature on the compaction curves has been given little consideration, A.W. Johnson and J. K. Jallberg summarized primarily from a search of the literature that increasing the temperature leads to increase the maximum dry density 0£ the single peak curve. They explained that the water in the soil is more viscous at the lower temperature, reducing the workability of the soil, which induces a lower dry density. Some investigations which were not involved· in the compaction tests, have shown the temperature effect on some soil properties. From the results of confined and undrained compression test, M. …

Finite Element Analysis By Structure Iteration, Richard William Macek Jan 1972

Finite Element Analysis By Structure Iteration, Richard William Macek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new approach in the application of 'the Finite Element Method to determine the stress distribution in stress concentration zones has been proposed and investigated. This approach uses the forces on the elements relatively far removed from the concentration zone to obtain the stresses near the zone by an iterative procedure, "Iterative Shrink1ng." For certain geometries applicable to high concentration zones, i.e. singularities in the stress field, it was shown that the basic equation of "Iterative Shrinking" reduces to simply the remultiplying of the starting matrices. In this case, termed "Conformal Shrinking," the computational effort reduces considerably. The problem of …

The Effects Of A Collegiate Wrestling Season On Selected Physiological Measurements, James W. Riesselman Jan 1972

The Effects Of A Collegiate Wrestling Season On Selected Physiological Measurements, James W. Riesselman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Coaches of wrestling have long been interested in the physiological changes which occur in a wrestler during a competitive season. This concern has been stimulated by the controversy over the effects of weight reduction among wrestlers prior to and during a season of competition. The practice of weight reduction has prompted research that follows wrestlers through the competitive season. Although studies have been completed centering around changes in muscular strength in relation to body weight loss, few have been conducted studying the cardiovascular changes which occur during a season of competitive wrestling. A search of the literature indicated that the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota 10 (SD 10) virus strain of epizootic, hemorrhagic disease (EHD). of deer has not been compared chemically and morphologically to the reference strain of EHD, New Jersey, .and other strains. In addition, the question has arisen if EHD viruses may be the same viruses as the bluetongue viruses found in sheep and cattle. Therefore, an investigation was undertaken to characterize SD 10 virus in comparison to other EHD virus strains with Bluetongue 262, Reovirus 3, Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitus virus, and Enteric Cytopathic Bovine Orphan virus as control viruses. All viruses used in this study were adapted to African …

The Effect Of Range Condition And Season Of Grazing On The Amount And Quality Of The Diet Selected By Grazing Steers, David W. Rodgers Jan 1972

The Effect Of Range Condition And Season Of Grazing On The Amount And Quality Of The Diet Selected By Grazing Steers, David W. Rodgers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adequate knowledge of the nutrition of grazing animals depends on accurate measurement of both intake and nutritional value of the forage being consumed. Cattle grazing native grasslands select their diet from a variety of plants which are continually changing in palatability, digestibility and chemical composition. The result of these changes may be inadequate nutrition for optimum animal production on a sustained basis. As forages mature, overgrazing occurs or with the onset of drought the incidence of inadequate nutrition of range livestock increases. Many workers agree that sampling from the esophageal fistula is the best method of evaluating the nutritional value …

Use Of Eelctrophoresis To Determine Populations Of Pheasants In South Dakota, David George Montag Jan 1972

Use Of Eelctrophoresis To Determine Populations Of Pheasants In South Dakota, David George Montag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is an important game bird, and various management techniques have been implemented in its behalf. One of the most common practices has been transplanting or stocking wherein pheasants are introduced into an area with a depleted population in hopes of increasing pheasant production. The effects of such programs are difficult to evaluate since there is no way of knowing if the introduced birds are in any way responsible for production changes which subsequently occur. If the taxonomic characteristics of the native and the introduced populations could be determined, the effect that introduced birds have on …

Effects Of Diethylstilbestrol On Reproduction In The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Donald G. Pfeiffer Jan 1972

Effects Of Diethylstilbestrol On Reproduction In The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Donald G. Pfeiffer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research was conducted in southwestern South Dakota in 1970 and 1971 to obtain information on the reproductive cycle of the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) and to test effectiveness of diethylstilbestrol as a reproductive inhibitor. Embryo body lengths from 10 pregnant females were compared to body lengths of 14 known day-old young to learn the peak breeding period when an estrogenic chemosterilant would be most effective. Conception dates were obtained for three females by backdating the gestation period. The breeding peak was found to occur in late February and early March in South Dakota. Nine of 11 Prairie dogs were …
