Evaluation Of Bi-Level Drainage Theory With A Viscous-Flow Analog, James Marfred Kienholz
Evaluation Of Bi-Level Drainage Theory With A Viscous-Flow Analog, James Marfred Kienholz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of this bi-level theory with a viscous-flow analog. Viscous-flow analogs have been used by many investigators in the past to evaluate analytical solution to drainage problems (Bear, 1972). The objectives of this study are: 1. Design and construct a viscous-flow analog for laboratory and classroom use, 2. Test the reliability of existing bi-level drainage theory with the analog, and 3. Provide design data for use in the solution of bi-level drainage problems. The bi-level drainage theory will be graphically presented for design purposes provided the theory is shown to …
Evaluation Of Methods Of Reducing Seed Dormancy In Switchgrass, Indiangrass, And Big Bluestem, Keith L. Byers
Evaluation Of Methods Of Reducing Seed Dormancy In Switchgrass, Indiangrass, And Big Bluestem, Keith L. Byers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Switchgrass, Panicun virgatum L., Indiangrass, Sorghastrum nutans Nash, and big bluestem, Andropogon gerardi Vitman, are tall, erect, native warm-season perennial grasses which in the past few years have received wide acceptance for use in the midsummer pasture establishment throughout the Great Plains. These warm-season grasses are native to the eastern part of the Great Plains and largely make up the tall grass prairie. They are well adapted to hot summer conditions and grow vigorously during July and August when the growth of cool-season grasses is slow or nil. Stand establishment and laboratory seed testing of these grasses are complicated by …
Reflectance Measurements For The Detection And Mapping Of Soil Limitations, Lawrence A. Benson
Reflectance Measurements For The Detection And Mapping Of Soil Limitations, Lawrence A. Benson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advent of remote sensing offers the soil surveyor new tools that can speed and improve the collection and compilation of soils information, but many questions remain unanswered. The big question is where does this new technique fit into the present system and how can it be used. The following report demonstrates the potential usefulness and validity of remote sensing for the mapping of soil limitations in the proposed Oahe irrigation project in South Dakota. The project was a part of the overall soil limitation study conducted by Dr. C. J. Frazee in conjunction with the Remote Sensing Institute and …
Mixing Characteristics Of An Aerated Lagoon Treating Municipal And Industrial Wastes, William J. Heyer
Mixing Characteristics Of An Aerated Lagoon Treating Municipal And Industrial Wastes, William J. Heyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of stabilization ponds as a means of providing wastewater treatment has been a common practice in many small midwestern communities. However, because of more stringent water quality standards and increased loadings on existing facilities, many communities have been forced to seek improved methods of wastewater treatment. One method of increasing the capacity of an existing stabilization pond is the addition of an aerated lagoon. In general, an aerated lagoon may be defined as a basin with a liquid depth of 6 to 15 feet in which oxygen is supplied to the liquid contents by mechanical or diffused aeration …

The Determination Of Salmonellae Transmission In Embryonated Chicken Eggs By The Use Of Whole-Body Sagittal Section And Fluorescent Antibody Techniques, Mark Michael Kieffer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“Domestic poultry constitutes the largest single reservoir of Salmonella organisms existing in nature,” stated J. E. Williams of the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory, Athens, Georgia. He reported that the frequency of salmonellae reported in poultry is due to the high population exposed to salmonellae and the extensive programs involved in isolation and identification. The 1971 annual Summary of Salmonella published by the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia reports 25,694 cases of salmonellosis in humans. This figure represents an increase of 6.1% over the 24,216 cases reported in 1970, and a 16.6% increase over the 21,413 cases reported in 1969. …
Optimum Design Of Multiple Source Pipeline Networks, Sheelendra S. Kulkarni
Optimum Design Of Multiple Source Pipeline Networks, Sheelendra S. Kulkarni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The numerous and diversified demands for water in urban, as well as rural areas, dictate the use of large and complex transmission and distribution systems to supply these demands. The cost of water supply systems is very high. The annual investment for water distribution in the United States is reported to be of the order of $1.5 billion. The initial cost of the network depends on the. Size of pumps and the diameters and lengths of the pipes used. In addition to the cost of installation, or fixed costs, there are operating costs caused by the losses in the system. …

Food poisoning is a phrase commonly used in reference to any foodborne illness. Foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria are of two types: (1) food infections caused by organisms such as the salmonellae which multiply and cause infections in the intestine, or (2) food intoxications caused by organisms such as staphylococci and clostridia that release a toxin into the food prior to ingestion by a susceptible person. The increasing importance of convenience foods presents problems of insuring their quality and safety, not only for the safety of the consumer; but, to protect the food industry also. Economic los s due to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Thesis Style Guide calls for a statement of the problem as the first of three sections of the introduction. In the case of my topic there is no problem, as such. What follows is an historical research project. I have endeavored to deal successfully with the broadness of my topic, boiling down 100 years of history into manageable proportions to fit the scope of a thesis. I, therefore, have chosen to call what follows an overview rather than a history in the interest of accuracy and candor. My primary objective in what follows is to offer a history of …
Evaluation Of Giant Canada Goose Restoration In Western South Dakota, Dennis L. Lengkeek
Evaluation Of Giant Canada Goose Restoration In Western South Dakota, Dennis L. Lengkeek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study of giant Canada goose (Branta Canadensis maxima) restoration in western South Dakota was conducted during 1970 and 1971. Nesting, production and mortality, homing, and pioneering were evaluated both years. Nesting began April 4 in 1970 and extended for 73 days, but the peak of nesting occurred from April 29 to May 5. In 1971, nesting began April 1 and continued for 69 days, with the peak occurring April 8-14. The peak of hatching occurred June 6-12 in 1970 and May 8-14 during 1971. Small stockponds were utilized for nesting both years. Islands were preferred nesting sites. Peninsulas and …

The Development And Testing Of A Fire Simulator Exercise, Don A. Clymer
The Development And Testing Of A Fire Simulator Exercise, Don A. Clymer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A forest fire simulation exercise was developed for the purpose of supplementing forest fire instruction, presenting students with decision-making situations encountered on forest fires, and introducing them to the fire simulator at Stephen F. Austin State University. The final exercise was developed after preliminary work and development of a more simple exercise. The problems with equipment, recruitment of simulator personnel, and the development and execution of the simulator exercises are discussed. Scheduling adequate time for practice, and providing adequate personnel training were found to be the major obstacles in simulator use. Future fire simulator use at SFA will be dependent …
