Accuracy Of College Women Shooting Set Shots As Affected By Selected Training Programs, Cindy Jane Fliss Jan 1974

Accuracy Of College Women Shooting Set Shots As Affected By Selected Training Programs, Cindy Jane Fliss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Power is defined as the product of strength times the speed of muscle contraction. Increased strength results in the ability to apply more force and thereby contributes to power. If all other factors remain equal, greater strength often results in better performance. In some athletic events, strength is the primary contributor and is, therefore, fundamental to excellence in those events. With the continual improvement of play in girls' basketball, the participants will need to be accurate outside shooters. The investigator felt that one factor that might hinder girls from being accurate outside shooters was the lack of strength to get …

A Study Of The Charge Distribution In Unconjugated Thiocarbonyl Compounds: A Comparison With Carbonyl And Imine Chromophores, John Yuchu Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Via a literature search it has been shown, by means of the ira spectra of thioamides, the dipole moments of thiocarbonyl compounds, the basicity of thioamides and thioureas, the acidity of carboxylic acids carrying a substituent with the thiocarbonyl function, LCAO-b MOc method, and proton chemical shifts, that the thiocarbonyl group has a tendency to give greater mesomeric interaction (a) than the carbonyl group (b) with electron donating heteroatoms. A comparison of the charge distribution in unconjugated thiocarbonyl (c), carbonyl (d), and imine (e) chromophores is made by means of surveying the dipole moments of several small molecules, calculating the …

Opportunity Costs Of Diverting Water From Agriculture To Industry In Portions Of Northeastern Wyoming, Woodrow Elbert Murray Jan 1974

Opportunity Costs Of Diverting Water From Agriculture To Industry In Portions Of Northeastern Wyoming, Woodrow Elbert Murray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies have been made on the feasibility and cost of diverting water both within and to Northeastern Wyoming. Estimates -for diverting water from the Powder River, including Crazy Woman and Clear Creeks, to the Gillette (Campbell County) area range from an annual water supply of 251,000 to 53,000 acre-feet, with dam construction costs of 6 to 59 million dollars. The annual water costs per acre-foot for delivery from the reservoirs to Gillette range from 76 to 99 dollars. Presumably the water would be taken from the unused and unappropriated water supply. Estimates for diverting water from the Tongue River for …

The Norwegian Heritage In America: Rølvaag's Concern For A Pluralistic Society, Hazel L. Halvorson Jan 1974

The Norwegian Heritage In America: Rølvaag's Concern For A Pluralistic Society, Hazel L. Halvorson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ole Rølvaag has been acclaimed as an interpreter of the Norwegian immigrants, particularly those who settled on the Midwestern prairies. In his probing of the psychological side of pioneering, he added a new dimension to what Henry Cornmage!' calls the "two grand themes of American history"--immigration and the westward movement. The central purpose of Rølvaag’s life was two-pronged: the interpretation of his countrymen's experience in the New World and the preservation of Norwegian heritage in America. The latter cause he championed for two reasons: l) to help the immigrants make their adjustment to the new land, and 2) to enrich …

Population Change In West Africa : 1954-1972, Ndidi Odashionu Okwumaba Jan 1974

Population Change In West Africa : 1954-1972, Ndidi Odashionu Okwumaba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the light of recent concern over world population growth, it would be interesting to study to what extent West Africa as a developing area has experienced changes in fertility, mortality and natural increase. This study would be especially interesting in that developing countries like those in West Africa account for approximately two-thirds of the world's population. Students of demography generally hold that as a rural agricultural country becomes more urbanized and industrialized, a transition also occurs in the demographic process. Under the influence of modernization, death rates decline rapidly while high fertility continues, producing a rapid population growth that …

The hospitals in South Dakota, like all other hospitals, need engineering services for efficient and economical operation. Presently, about one-half of the hospitals licensed by the State Health Department are accredited by the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation. Mr. Norton, Administrator at Yankton's Sacred Heart Hospital, indicated that about one-half of South Dakota's hospitals are meeting the required standards, for hospital safety and equipment maintenance, of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. The larger hospitals in the state have personnel providing engineering services, but these larger hospitals comprise a small part or' the total health care facilities in the …

Peroxyacetic Acid Delignification Of Wood And Bark From Ponderosa Pine (Pinus Ponderosa), Danny C. Ronning Jan 1974

Peroxyacetic Acid Delignification Of Wood And Bark From Ponderosa Pine (Pinus Ponderosa), Danny C. Ronning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ruminant species, which include cattle, sheep and goats, have the unique capability of digesting. cellulose and hemicellulose, the cell-wall carbohydrates that constitute 70 to 80 percent of wood fiber. By their conversion of these higher polysaccharides, which are indigestible by humans and other monogastrics, to animal products the ruminant species offer a potential means for solving the residue disposal problems of the wood industry while concomitantly extending the food supply for human nutrition. The ability of ruminants to digest the cell-wall carbohydrates depends on the microbial digestion that occurs in the reticule-rumen. This organ lies between the esophagus and the …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The School Property Tax And The Disparities In Public School Finance In South Dakota, Ronald R. Soderberg Jan 1974

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The School Property Tax And The Disparities In Public School Finance In South Dakota, Ronald R. Soderberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In view of the wide disparities in school financing in South Dakota, the need for change in the present system is becoming increasingly apparent. Given that most school systems rely heavily on the local property tax for their revenue, the common element of most proposed changes is to lessen such reliance. To do so, it is believed will eliminate the close ties between a school district's wealth and the quality of education it is able to finance. Such reform would likely make for a more equitable educational system in South Dakota. For indeed there exist considerable variations in school district …

The Relationship Of Selected Objective Factors To Team Success In College Football, Lawrence Edward Langemo Jan 1974

The Relationship Of Selected Objective Factors To Team Success In College Football, Lawrence Edward Langemo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

American football has undergone many significant changes since its first recorded game between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869.1 It has been proclaimed by many to be the number one spectator sport in the United States over the last decade. The main objective of football is to win. Winning is accomplished by one group of eleven players moving a football across a goal line at one end of a field, or moving it close enough to the goal posts to kick the ball over the crossbar and between the uprights.2 If one group of eleven players does this and …

Pathos And Its Paradox : The Vision Of J. M. Synge, William K. Schultz Jan 1974

Pathos And Its Paradox : The Vision Of J. M. Synge, William K. Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For J. M. Synge what Francis Bickley calls the "hard light" of reality and the "passion" of imagination are combined in the character of the Irish peasant. As Bickley again observes, "in this people, as he saw it--and he had no sentimentality to mar his vision--the god and the beast were mixed in just proportions; corresponding to that juxtaposition of exaltation and brutality which figures in his theory of poetry." It is the poetic richness of Synge's language, too, that juxtaposes the potential of language and the potential of life. It is a rhythmic language that pulsates with the fullness …

The Erythropoietic Effects Of Dibenzyline, Atropine And Iron Dextran On Doe And Fetal Rabbits, Rex Edwin Riis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The neonatal anemia of rats, swine and humans is a common physiological phenomenon. The progression of the anemia is subjected to wide individual variation and usually progresses inversely to the dam's nutrition. The neonate's nutrition also inversely alters the anemic period. The neonatal anemia does not become apparent until three to five days postpartum. The neonate demonstrates a fast-growing period following parturition with only small storage iron reserves available for the developing tissues. Consequently, there is a decrease in iron availability for normal hemoglobin synthesis and mature erythrocyte formation. The anemic neonate becomes more susceptible to disease which may terminate …

The Effects Of Two Adhesive Ankle Taping Techniques Upon Selected Motor Abilities And Ankle Flexibility, Robert Carl Hoeg Jan 1974

The Effects Of Two Adhesive Ankle Taping Techniques Upon Selected Motor Abilities And Ankle Flexibility, Robert Carl Hoeg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ankle joint, because of the inadequate support supplied by muscles and ligaments, suffers frequent and often severe injury. Many coaches and athletes believe that adhesive taping of the ankle will reduce the occurrence of ankle injuries. Garrick has shown in his study that adhesive taping does help prevent ankle injuries to some degree. As a result, many athletes, professional and amateur, have their ankles taped routinely for protective purposes before practicing and playing in athletic contests. The adhesive taping of the ankle joint helps prevent injury by reducing the maximal range of movement of the joint. The athletic trainer, …
