Differential Role Of The Endothelium In Regulating Microvascular Blood Flow, Tao Tang May 1994

Differential Role Of The Endothelium In Regulating Microvascular Blood Flow, Tao Tang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The vascular endothelial cell (EC) plays an important role in regulating vascular tone and local blood flow by sensing chemical and mechanical stimuli on the vascular wall and releasing a host of vasoactive substances upon activations of endogenous or exogenous vasoactive substances. The central hypothesis is that local control of blood now and autoregulatory behavior in the microcirculation is distinctive at different levels of the vasculature and is dependent on the cellular activities of the EC and its interaction with the local environment. The in vivo as well as the ex vivo, flow-controlled preparations of the hamster cheek pouch were …

Characterization Of The Vasoactivity Of Tachykinins In Isolated Rat Kidney: Functional Studies And In Vitro Receptor Autoradiography, Yuejin Chen May 1994

Characterization Of The Vasoactivity Of Tachykinins In Isolated Rat Kidney: Functional Studies And In Vitro Receptor Autoradiography, Yuejin Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although tachykinins have potent vascular actions, their effect on renal resistance blood vessels is currently unknown. The vasoactive properties of tachykinins and related analogs were assessed in isolated perfused rat kidney. At a basal perfusion pressure (PP) of 75 $\pm$ 6 mm Hg (n = 5), bolus injections of substance P (SP) had no significant vasoactive effect. Following a sustained increase in baseline PP (134 $\pm$ 10 mm Hg) produced by phenylephrine (1 $\mu$M), SP evoked a dose-dependent increase in PP. The largest dose of SP increased PP by 60 $\pm$ 5 mm Hg. The vasoconstrictor response to SP was …

Winter/Spring Population Characteristics Of White-Tailed Deer In An Agricultural/Wetland Complex In Northeastern South Dakota, Brian J. Kernohan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Habitat preference, cover characteristics of corn, movements, and sexual segregation patterns of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were evaluated at Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge (SLNWR) in winter (January - March) and spring (April - June), 1993 and 1994. An average of 20 radio-collared deer were monitored per season, which resulted in 4, 058 relocations. Habitat preference was assessed using 95 and 50% home range contours that were estimated using an adaptive kernel method. Agricultural crops (i.e., corn [Zea mays], row crops other than corn [e.g., soybeans [Glycine max]], small grains [e. g., wheat [Triticum aestivum]], and alfalfa [Medicago sativa]) were …

Winter Diet And Nutritional Condition Of White-Tailed Deer In The Northern Black Hills, South Dakota, Robert G. Osborn Jan 1994

Winter Diet And Nutritional Condition Of White-Tailed Deer In The Northern Black Hills, South Dakota, Robert G. Osborn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Habitat deterioration in the northern Black Hills (NBH) of South Dakota may be responsible for declining white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population levels (Griffin et al. 1992). Because of the relationship between habitat and nutrition, a two-year research project was initiated in January 1992 to evaluate the physical and nutritional condition of white-tailed deer inhabiting five NBH winter subranges. Habitat variables were measured at 100 random locations on each study area. Pellet groups were collected throughout each study area at two-week intervals during January, February, and March 1992 and 1993. Five female white-tailed deer were collected from each study area in …

Characteristics Of Milk And Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese From Cows Fed Extruded Soybeans And Niacin, Matthew Ryan Lentsch Jan 1994

Characteristics Of Milk And Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese From Cows Fed Extruded Soybeans And Niacin, Matthew Ryan Lentsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today's consumers are demanding food products that are "low-fat", "reduced fat", "high in -unsaturated fatty acids", and "low cholesterol". This trend in food product selection is at the advice of many health professionals. Current health recommendations are to lower the dietary intake of fat, especially saturated fat. In 1992, total dairy sales accounted for over 10% of total food sales (Milk Industry Foundation, 1993). Since dairy products are perceived as being hypercholesterolemic, a market exists for dairy products which are "lower in fat" and/or "lower in saturated fat". It is said that "consumer perception is marketing reality", and because of …
