A Qualitative Study Of Teachers' Perceptions Of Staff Development In Three Public Northeast Tennessee Elementary School Districts., Rebekah Ellen Barnard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study serves as an insight into teachersÆ perceptions of their staff development experiences. With the constraints under the No Child Behind Act, teachers, schools, and school systems are faced with the challenge of meeting extremely high standards with students. Although standards such as these expectations have never been met, it remains that teachers are faced with attempting this task. Teachers shared their perceptions of the staff development experiences they have received. Student achievement and its relationship to staff development was explored. Teachers discussed perceived factors that influenced staff development training. Also, included in the study was teachers' perceptions …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From 1962 to 1975, General Features Corporation distributed a column by traditional conservative Russell Kirk. The column appeared on the political page of newspapers across the country under the title “To The Point”.1 The column provided social commentary on a wide variety of topics ranging from foreign policy, to civil rights, to feminism. Papers that carried the column included Los Angeles Times (1962-early 1968), New Orleans Time-Picayune (late 1962-late 1971), Detroit News (early 1970-1975).2 The research for this thesis included both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources included articles housed at the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural …
Theological Dualism In The Poetry Of George Herbert., Carolyn Elizabeth Woodruff
Theological Dualism In The Poetry Of George Herbert., Carolyn Elizabeth Woodruff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Theological dualism is a primary element in George Herbert's poetry. Poems such as "The Flower," "Affliction I," "Affliction V," "The Banquet" and "Love III" illustrate the necessary tension inherent in the polarity of theological dualism. Abstractions such as joy, grief, pleasure, pain, birth, and death form the framework for Herbert's illustration of the Christian pilgrim in search of divine communion. For the searching Christian to understand one abstract principle, its opposite must be equally explored. In this journey to comprehend the duality of the Christian life, one reaches spiritual enlightenment and communion with God. Although several critics have recognized the …
A Durkheimian Sociobiology?, Jason Oliver Dixon
A Durkheimian Sociobiology?, Jason Oliver Dixon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As conceived by Durkheim, social facts set parameters on what is of sociological interest, and subsequently how social phenomena are explained. This thesis reworks this theoretical concept to allow for biological explanations of some social phenomena. It by no means, asserts that all social phenomena can be explained by biology, but it recognizes that biological explanations of human behavior are available and are of sociological interest. The argument agrees with the main thrust of Durkheim's defense of social facts, but his critique of utility, while insightful, is considered unnecessary to negate individual causality.
Willingness To Accept Forgiveness In Various Religious Targets., Meridith Ann Brewer
Willingness To Accept Forgiveness In Various Religious Targets., Meridith Ann Brewer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Three scenarios regarding a target man's moral behavior were used to examine 'religious halo' 'religious boomerang', and a 'halo recovery' effect. Initially, participants rated a male target in response to his religious affiliation. Secondly, participants rated the male target following an act of infidelity. Finally, participants provided ratings of the male target with the knowledge that the target received forgiveness from significant others. Results indicated that participants did not discriminate based on knowledge of the target's religious affiliation but did reject the target following an act of infidelity. New to this research, however, was discovery of a 'halo recovery' where …

The Effects Of A Multimodality Approach On Sentence Production Using Response Elaboration Training With A Reading Component On Aphasic Patients., Sara E. Mccarthy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effects of a multimodality treatment were investigated using a single subject experimental design across behaviors in two patients with different severity levels of Broca's aphasia. We hypothesized that Response Elaboration Training and an oral reading task would improve accuracy of sentence production, information content, and mean length of utterance. Results indicated that this treatment approach elicited significant improvement in the accuracy of sentence production and information content in the participant with very mild Broca's aphasia. Furthermore, the participant with severe Broca's aphasia demonstrated a very significant improvement in information content and mean length of utterance. The improvements support the …
The Text Of Romans In Sahidic Coptic, David Kneip
The Text Of Romans In Sahidic Coptic, David Kneip
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The last fifty years have seen something of a downturn in the number of studies undertaken concerning the Coptic biblical text. Recognizing the lack of attention the Coptic biblical text has received, and also in light of the growing manuscript evidence in the various Coptic dialects, many scholars have begun to call for new studies in the Coptic biblical text, especially the New Testament. This study takes a first step in the direction toward a new critical edition of the Pauline corpus by investigating anew the three most complete manuscripts of Romans known to the scholarly world.

Geometric Pitch Structure And Form In "Deserts" By Edgard Varese., Michael David Sprowles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Edgard Varese began composing "Deserts" in 1949 and completed it late in 1954. Scored for fifteen instruments, five percussionists and two tapes of organized sounds, "Deserts" comprises acoustic instrumental music and sections of electronically-organized sounds on magnetic tape meant to be inserted at three specific locations within the piece. The alternating sections create a continuous, seven-part form. For a piece of music that is viewed by many as one of Varese's greatest works, scholarly writing On "Deserts" has been sparse compared to studies of works by other prominent composers of the same time. Since Varese's death in 1961 there have …

Isomerization, Reactivity, And Structural Study Of A Thioperoxide-Bridged Dimolybdenum(V) Dimer., Chi Minh Tuong 1971-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis of the methyl thioperoxide-bridged dimolybdenum(V) dimer, [Mo2(NTo)2(S2P(OEt)2)2S(O2CMe)(SOMe)], was improved and the compound was structurally characterized by crystallography. The compound proved to be very stable to light and heat. The possibility of photolytic or thermolytic rearrangement of the methyl thioperoxide ligand ( -S-O-R) to a methyl sulfinyl ligand ( -S(=O)R) was investigated. These studies showed that the methyl thioperoxide compound did not produce the desired sulfinyl isomer. The photolyses produced mainly a derivative of the methyl thioperoxide compound, where a hydroxo bridge is thought to have replaced the acetate bridge. Minor products formed in general agreement with the photolysis …

The models could explain at least 66% of the variance of the daily peak ozone. On average, the errors of the model were within +/- 15.0 ppb on 88% of …
Dhea Action Is Mediated By Multiple Receptors And Metabolites., Kristy K. Michael Miller
Dhea Action Is Mediated By Multiple Receptors And Metabolites., Kristy K. Michael Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a C-19 adrenal steroid and the most abundant circulating hormone in humans. Since circulating levels decline in late adulthood, treatment of humans with DHEA has been suggested to have beneficial health effects. Although the mechanism of action is unknown, DHEA may be metabolized to active metabolites that exert their physiological effects by receptor-mediated processes and cell signaling pathways. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanistic processes of DHEA action. Since DHEA may exert its pleotropic effects by being metabolized to biologically active species, a GC/MS method was developed to quantify the liver microsomal metabolism …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Built during the Early Classical period, the Temple of Zeus at Olympia and its sculptural program presented many new ideas in Greek society. I will argue that the Temple, in particular its metopes depicting the twelve Labors of Herakles, exemplified the humanization of the Greek hero and illustrated the increasingly personal nature of Greek religion following the Persian War. I will first discuss the history of Olympia and the Altis, especially in relation to the celebration of the Olympic Games. I will then describe the Temple of Zeus and its sculptural program. The sculptures, in particular the metopes, will be …

Indicators Of Community Receptivity To International Service-Learning Programs., Henry R. Cunningham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an exploratory study of the indicators of receptivity that communities portray towards international service-learning programs. Historically, programs such as service learning programs choose communities and other working partners based on the needs of these communities. International service-learning on the other hand because of the high cost of travel to another country and accommodation needs to minimize the risk of having unsupportive partners. In this light, communities should be assessed to ensure that they are receptive to international service-learning programs. The study was conducted in a community that displayed a high level of receptivity to the University of …
