Wake Measurements And Flow Visualization Of A Blended-Wing-Body-Model, Harold Holbrook Whiffen
Wake Measurements And Flow Visualization Of A Blended-Wing-Body-Model, Harold Holbrook Whiffen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Limited significant changes in commercial aircraft designed have emerged in the past four decades. With the increased awareness of noise pollution in airport areas, the challenges of noise reduction and the modernization of commercial aircraft have resulted in the design of a novel Blended Wing Body (BWB) aircraft. The BWB provides promise for noise reduction through shielding as well as techniques such as boundary layer ingestion (BLI) engine inlets and distributed propulsion.
The purpose of this study was to depict the wake and flow over and on the surface of the model. Testing was conducted in a low speed wind …

An Investigation Of Psychosocial Functioning For Children And Adolescents Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorders, Maura Paczan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study provides a literature review of how the various sub-types of bipolar disorders are related to a child's daily functioning. Also, this study examined the age of onset of the disorder as it is related to psychosocial functioning. Specifically, age of onset was compared with psychosocial functioning in the areas of friends, family and school. Further, the interaction between age of onset, type of bipolar disorder (I, II, NOS), and psychosocial functioning was examined. The results confirmed, youth diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder evidence significant difficulty in overall psychosocial functioning. This finding was consistent across measures (i.e., CGAS and GSA …

This study explores the changes in depression, anxiety and quality of life of patients who underwent gastric by-pass surgery. The purpose of this study was to assess the mental health status of 30 patients by comparing the pre and post-operative mental health evaluative data that had been collected at the pre-surgery evaluation and again at the two, four and six-month follow-up appointments. The data included scores from Beck Depression Inventories (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventories (BAI) and Rand 36-Item Quality of Life Health Surveys (SF-36). Surgical intervention treatments of obesity are increasing. Evaluation of the pre-operative and post-operative psychological status of …
Educational Facilities Planning: A Systems Model, Frederick Story Withum
Educational Facilities Planning: A Systems Model, Frederick Story Withum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing a primarily experiential literature base, a thematic analysis of text and a synthesis of literature from education, educational administration, architecture, and organizational sociology, a systems model of public educational facilities planning was developed. The model represents a theoretical construct from which design professionals and educators can better organize, understand, analyze, communicate, and research complex cause-effect relationships that occur when educational facilities are designed and constructed. The Systems Model for Planning of Educational Facilities attempts to: (1) identify and describe complicated social, cultural, political, and economic mechanisms at work when public schools are designed and constructed in a pluralistic democratic …
Transparency, Accountability And Public Participation As Foundations For Effective Operations Of Natural Resource Funds: Implications For The Russian Stabilization Fund, Lada Progunova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research argues that in order to operate successfully a Natural Resource Fund (NRF), no matter what its goals are, must be transparent, accountable and open for public scrutiny. Otherwise, a NRF could be useless or even harmful. "Resource curse," "Dutch disease," and "rentier" behavior are theoretical rationales for establishing NRFs. Corruption is viewed as a "transmission channel" of natural resource effects on growth.
Guidelines to evaluate NRFs for transparency and accountability were developed. Analysis of selected NRFs' websites revealed that Norway and Alaska provide directions to incorporate transparency into a NRF. Alberta demonstrates that even if democracy is strong, …
Engaging Vernacular Voices: Exploring Online Public Spheres Of Discourse For Everyday Citizens, Linda Schifino
Engaging Vernacular Voices: Exploring Online Public Spheres Of Discourse For Everyday Citizens, Linda Schifino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project considers the ways in which ordinary citizens engage in public discourse. This work is guided by what Michael Schudson calls the triumph of democratic sensibilities--the expectation that everybody owns public life. A politically active citizenry is, therefore, vital to a healthy democracy. Further, this inquiry assumes a rhetorical view of civic engagement, arguing that participation in a democracy is more than merely casting one's vote. Consequently, it is essential to identify and evaluate the vehicles by which individual citizens can take part in discursive civic life.
The challenge to healthy public spheres of discourse in contemporary American society …
The Effectiveness Of The Bicum Study-Reading Instructional Strategy On Reading Comprehension And Self-Efficacy Levels Of First-Year, First-Semester College Students Enrolled In A Three-Credit Developmental Reading And Study Skills Course, Gwendolyn Brown-Durham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if explicit instruction using the BICUM Study-Reading Strategy would increase the reading comprehension and self-efficacy levels of first-year, first-semester college students enrolled in a three-credit developmental reading and study skills course. The design selected to test the null hypotheses was a "Nonequivalent Control Group Design." The sample for this study consisted of 34 first-year, first-semester students who were enrolled in two three-credit developmental reading and study skills courses at a public university located in a rural section of south central Pennsylvania. There was an experimental group consisting of 19 students and a …

Normative Practices And Normative Identities: A Critical Feminist Investigation Of Pregnancy Ultrasound, Bethany Riddle
Normative Practices And Normative Identities: A Critical Feminist Investigation Of Pregnancy Ultrasound, Bethany Riddle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pregnancy ultrasound has gained popularity in recent decades. In the U.S. and other industrialized countries, it is an expected part of the medical monitoring that accompanies pregnancy. Most scientific, medical and popular opinions of pregnancy ultrasound consider it to be unequivocally beneficial. However, following feminist researchers who note the potential for the ultrasound to act as a form of surveillance, medicalize the body of the woman while simultaneously removing it from the picture, and sediment the reality of pregnancy, I took as my starting point the idea that it is important that we investigate technologies that are taken for granted …
An Examination Of The Bio-Philosophical Literature On The Definition And Criteria Of Death: When Is Dead Dead And Why Some Donation After Cardiac Death Donors Are Not, Leslie Whetstine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human fascination with transplantation has been portrayed in mythology and legend as well as in art and literature throughout history. It has both horrified and captivated our collective conscience and has progressed, in a relatively short time period, from science fiction to a modern accomplishment that can improve longevity and enhance quality of life.
The primary obstacle for transplantation is no longer scientific in nature but is predominantly one of supply and demand and carries with it attendant ethical concerns. Specific to this work is the question of whether a particular method of organ procurement known as Donation After Cardiac …

A New Theory And Measure Of Ethical Work Climate: The Psychological Process Model (Ppm) And The Ethical Climate Index (Eci), Anke Arnaud
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With this dissertation I developed a new theory and measure of ethical work climate (EWC). Currently, there exists one dominant theory and measure of EWC developed by Victor and Cullen (1988, 1987). Even though researchers have identified problems with this theory, such as inconsistencies with regard to its limited theoretical scope and troubling psychometric properties, it is the most widely utilized framework for conceptualizing and testing EWC. Therefore, I propose to develop an improved theory and measure of EWC, one capable of addressing some of the principle shortcomings of earlier efforts. Building on Rest's (1986, 1979) "Four-Component" model of individual-level …
Atmospheric Mercury Deposition In An Urban Environment, Mark Fulkerson
Atmospheric Mercury Deposition In An Urban Environment, Mark Fulkerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Atmospheric mercury deposition, known to be a major source of mercury to aquatic and terrestrial environments, was studied at an urban site in Orlando, FL. Precipitation sampling was conducted from September 2003 to May 2006 at a Mercury Deposition Network site located on the University of Central Florida campus. Weekly rainfall and mercury wet deposition data were gathered from this site, which provided the framework of data for this study. Historical mercury wet deposition data from several sites in Florida were used to develop a regression model to predict mercury deposition at any location in Florida. Stormwater runoff from a …
Epidemiological Models For Mutating Pathogens With Temporary Immunity, Neeta Singh
Epidemiological Models For Mutating Pathogens With Temporary Immunity, Neeta Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Significant progress has been made in understanding different scenarios for disease transmissions and behavior of epidemics in recent years. A considerable amount of work has been done in modeling the dynamics of diseases by systems of ordinary differential equations. But there are very few mathematical models that deal with the genetic mutations of a pathogen. In-fact, not much has been done to model the dynamics of mutations of pathogen explaining its effort to escape the host's immune defense system after it has infected the host. In this dissertation we develop an SIR model with variable infection age for the transmission …

An Exploratory Study Of Socially Responsibleprocurement Activitiesin The Expenditure Of Public Fundsat The State And Local Level, Donna Mccarthy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aggregate annual expenditures of federal, state and local governments, in concert with universities and school districts represents incredible purchasing power and requires great prowess in its expenditure. Over the course of centuries, procurement has been used as a policy tool to improve society. This research delved into defining and determining the involvement of state and local governments in socially responsible activities related to the expenditure of public funds. Data collected in 2005 by the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing, Inc., was reviewed to determine if the expectations set for the private sector known as corporate social responsibility could be …
