Tracking is a longstanding structure in K-12 mathematics that decades of research has shown to be inequitable. Despites calls to detrack mathematics classes, most U.S. schools retain tracking. Mathematics educators have attempted to implement teaching pedagogies such as Teaching for Social Justice (TSJ) that promote equity in all mathematics classrooms, including tracked classes. This research used the Learning to Teach for Social Justice Belief (LTSJ-B) Scale with middle school mathematics teachers who have taught in tracked classes to measure their levels of commitment to TSJ. My thesis exhibition questions the modern sanctification of authenticity. No longer believing in objective truths, the postmodern society seeks epistemic grounding on being true to oneself. The categories of authentic-or-fake replaced the binary of true-or-false. But authenticity is a trojan horse for authentication. As a Korean American artist, I'm encouraged to express my “authentic” Korean identity. This encouragement can also imply my works will receive recognition as authentic and meaningful only when they embody Korean cultural expression. Childhood trauma is an alarming public health crisis, and the field of trauma research is relatively underdeveloped given population rates of childhood trauma and post-trauma pathology. Even less studied than the impacts of trauma are the impacts of resilience, and the protective factors that foster it. It is widely acknowledged that an investigation of trauma is incomplete without an investigation of its impacts on fear processing. The tumor microenvironment (TME) represents the complex outcome of numerous tumor, stromal, and immune interactions, and whose composition can significantly affect treatment response. Particularly, immunotherapeutic efficacy is subject to multiple tumor-specific TME interactions that may be difficult to evaluate/predict clinically. Mathematical modelling has been formulated to evaluate specific aspects of the TME, including vasculature, ECM deposition, and immune-tumor interactions. A social choice function is said to be strategy-proof if no voter has any motivation to lie about their true preference. Strategy-proofness is a desirable property of social choice functions so we consider here functions that always satisfy this property. We add to this property the additional desirable conditions of anonymity and neutrality and present domains on which we can get a characterization of majority rule as the only social choice function that satisfies these three properties. Furthermore, we consider what functions look like when we drop the condition of anonymity.

Burnout In Rural Special Education Teachers Of Students With Low Incidence Disabilities: A Mixed Methods Study On The Fall Of The Dedicated And Committed., Kristie N. Jones

The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the phenomenon of burnout in rural special education teachers of students with low incidence disabilities. For the quantitative phase, the Maslach Burnout Inventory- Educator Survey (MBI-ES, Maslach et al., 1986) was administered to 23 participants from geographically rural areas of one southern state in the United States. Descriptive analysis found that 92% of participants were experiencing high or moderate levels of burnout. Pearson correlation coefficient determined a statistically significant positive correlation between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A negative correlation was found between teachers’ age and depersonalization. Six participants …

This non-experimental study utilized a convenience sample (N = 322) to investigate graduate students in physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech-language pathology’ s (SLP) knowledge of the connection between Down syndrome and dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). Ninety-two-point-five percent of participants were female, and 79.80% were white. All participants completed a survey comprised of items relating to information about general knowledge (i.e. facts) of the association between DS and DAT, the signs/symptoms that occur in each stage of dementia of the Alzheimer’s type for people with Down syndrome, and familiarity regarding the diagnosis and care. Organic synthesis is a critical process in the creation of small molecule pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. However, most methods for synthesizing these small molecules rely on toxic organic solvents as the reaction medium which account for approximately 80% of pharmaceutical waste. Moreover, many catalytic reactions require expensive endangered precious metals like palladium and costly metals. This dissertation presents research that aims to develop sustainable, eco-friendly reaction conditions to address these issues. We developed a ligand-free bimetallic nanocatalyst for the hydrogenation of unsaturated enones. The increased presence of disruptive digital technologies in academia has been a subject of multidisciplinary scholarly conversation and public speculation over the past few decades. Many literacy studies scholars have contributed to this discourse, examining topics like multimodal literacies and perceptions of agency among students. Swallowing is an intricate process involving over 50 muscle pairs and numerous nerves, with dysphagia resulting from deficits in various stages (Hennessy & Goldenberg, 2016). Lingual restriction may adversely impact swallowing function, affecting bolus preparation, size, and overall efficiency. There has been a significant increase in the use of distance education (DE) in institutions of higher education (IHEs) that is leading to a shift in pedagogy and practices. In the fall of 2021, approximately 61% of undergraduate students nationally were enrolled in at least one online course. The goals of this study were twofold: to further examine sustainability within the brewing industry through a literature analysis across four academic journals, and a benchmarking analysis of a Louisville, Kentucky brewery’s resource consumption and emissions production. Publications related to the brewing industry were examined for the presence of sustainability keywords: “efficiency, sustainability, carbon footprint, climate change and greenhouse gas”. Background: Pandemics are associated with loss of life, hospitalizations, and disruption to people’s social and economic lives. As the 2019 pandemic illustrates, COVID-19 can be prevented by pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). Recommended measures such as wearing a mask, washing hands, social distancing, and self-quarantine have been proven to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Identifying the factors associated with adherence to NPIs is the first step in understanding which levers of change to pull when designing health promotion interventions such as health communication campaigns. The host microbiome plays an important role in fine-tuning host immune responses in a manner that ultimately impacts outcomes in viral infection. Symbiotic relationships between commensal bacteria and host epithelial and immune cells prime interferon (IFN) signaling, modulating the nature and intensity of the immune response to viral infections at mucosal barrier surfaces. In this doctoral thesis, I explore how dysbiotic shifts in the oral microbial communities modulate antiviral responses at the oral and oro-respiratory mucosal barriers. Query optimization in document stores has traditionally relied on rule-based approaches, but recent research advocates for a shift towards cost-based optimization. However, this transition is hindered by the fragmented nature of existing approaches, stemming from the early development stage of cost-based query optimization for document databases. A key challenge lies in the absence of a standardized query language and semantics, exacerbated by the diverse and schema-less nature of JSON document collections. The frequency dependence of electrokinetic particle trapping using large-area (>mm2) conductive carbon nanofiber (CNF) mat electrodes is investigated. The fibers provide nanoscale geometric features for the generation of high electric field gradients, which is necessary for particle trapping via dielectrophoresis (DEP). A device was fabricated with an array of microfluidic wells for repeated experiments; each well included a CNF mat electrode opposing an aluminum electrode. Fluorescent microspheres (1 µm) were trapped at various electric field frequencies between 30 kHz – 1 MHz. Digital images of each well were analyzed to quantify particle trapping. This study examines the impact of rainfall event characteristics and water table elevations on arsenic and boron contamination in groundwater near two coal ash ponds in Louisville, Kentucky. Utilizing data from 2011 to 2019, the research focuses on both capped and uncapped ponds at Mill Creek and Cane Run sites, employing Threshold Analysis, Regularized Discriminant Analysis (RDA) and Random Forest (RF) to assess contamination levels in groundwater. Analysis shows that capped ponds generally exhibit reduced arsenic levels, though variations exist depending on the contaminant and site. This thesis is an investigation into the Peruvian pre-Columbian collection at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The Speed Art Museum acquired this collection in 1934 and it has largely remained unresearched for nearly a century after acquisition into the museum’s collection. This investigation is not an attempt to make broad characterizations of pre-Columbian ceramics. Nor is its goal to fill in all the gaps of the collection’s history. As the world around them digitizes, their options for where to seek new information have expanded to include technological sources like Google Search. This dissertation examines what factors impact children’s trust in search engines, particularly Google. Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects the central nervous system (CNS) causing muscle paralysis and autonomic dysfunctions throughout the body. Muscle activation after SCI is essential to facilitate functional recovery and may be produced via remaining input from supraspinal centers, the central pattern generators (CPG), or muscle stretch reflex responses. Since enslavement in the United States Black women have cultivated different ways to fight for their Reproductive Justice. After emancipation Black women have continued to utilize the practices learned from our ancestors to obtain Reproductive Justice. Despite the women’s movement becoming mainstream in the 1960s many Black women continued to grassroots organize to adequately address the issues that were unique to them. Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is a Class I, level A indication for treatment and prevention further complications of CVD. The attendance rate for CR in the U.S. is very low, especially among female patients. Dimensions of social support, sex of the support provider, and the quality of primary intimate relationship are associated with health-promoting behavior and may influence CR adherence in patients. This dissertation study examined cybersecurity education praxis and broadening participation in cybersecurity in response to calls of action made by the government-funded National Science Foundation. The cybersecurity education domain has a literature base investigating pedagogical practices that foster cybersecurity learning. However, a gap in the literature is reports of cybersecurity learner perceptions regarding implemented pedagogical practices. Authentic research centering on the experiences of the marginalized and underrepresented identity holders targeted in broadening participation calls is also limited in the cybersecurity education research domain.
