For a brief period of fifteen years, the Board of Internal Improvement occupied a place of prominence in the political and economic affairs of Kentucky. Application Of Revised Flesch Reading Ease And Human Interest Formulas To Locally-Written And Associated Press Copy In Three South Dakota Dailies, Helen Kakonis Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As far back as Biblical times man has recognized the importance of simplicity in making himself understood. Today, during the time of world crisis, the need for clear communications becomes increasingly vital. Readability formulas and their use as a research tool have been widely-debated subjects among journalists and researchers during the past two decades. This study is concerned with the revised Flesch formula and its application to associated Press wire stories and locally written stories in South Dakota daily newspapers. Thus, it is first necessary to establish what readability means, what the formula measures, and what it does not measure. …

An Evaluation Of The Developmental Reading Program At South Dakota State College, Ruth L. Foreman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past twenty years, much interest has been shown in the student who is handicapped in learning because of reading problems, whether of speed or comprehension or both. Attempts are being made in many colleges throughout the nation to set up reading laboratories for remedial training of these students. Since most educators assume a close correlation between reading comprehension and success in college, there is hope that by improvement of reading, more students may be able to continue and complete their college careers. The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the help given by the developmental reading …

A Plan Of Trade And Job Analysis For Organizing Printing Instruction In School Or Plant Situations, Ngo Dinh Duyen Jan 1964

A Plan Of Trade And Job Analysis For Organizing Printing Instruction In School Or Plant Situations, Ngo Dinh Duyen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The trade and job analysis approach to managerial and educational problems has been employed effectively in many situations, particularly in vocational instruction in schools and industry. The continuous flow of new methods, techniques and processes, the development of intricate equipment, and the massing of information in the printing trade, require constant upgrading of skills, knowledge, talents and abilities of personnel. Also, the functions and responsibilities of the foremen or shop supervisors, now more highly specialized and better organized, are focused on human relations, production, and training. Without an organized system of presentation, any training course becomes a jumbled mass of …

Problems In The Freeze-Drying Of Foods, Minakshi Desai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural drying of edible seeds and fruits with the aid of the sun and wind is one of the oldest methods of preserving food and was practiced even by the people of the Stone Age. Drying means the removal of water, whereas dehydration means the application of special techniques for the removal of water with minimum damage to appearance, flavor, texture, and nutritive value. Among various methods of dehydration, freeze-drying most satisfactorily fulfills the requirements of minimum damage. Freeze-drying, also known as lypohilization, was introduced as a method of treating glands for pharmaceutical purposes. Being a slow and expensive process, …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Shrink-Resistant And Antibacterial Finishes On Wool Blankets After Repeated Launderings, Coila M. Janecek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wool blankets are important to the economy of the state since South Dakota is one of ten leading states in wool production. Wool’s greatest competitor, synthetic fibers, has increased in production from 85.2 million pounds in 1949 to 470.5 million pounds in 1958, an increase of approximately 550 percent. This competition by synthetic fibers has resulted in the wool industry undertaking intensive re-search to develop finishes that would improve the quality of wool products. Results of South Dakota and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Stations research indicated that wool blankets ranked highest of all fiber types in warmth qualities, however, shrinkage in …

An Appraisal Of The Use Of Soil Survey Information As The Basis For Valuing Land For Tax Purposes In Spink County, South Dakota, Donald Dean Patterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since about 1900, prominent writers in the field of public finance have found justifiable reason for condemning the general property tax. Many of its deficiencies are inherent in its basic nature while others arise from problems of administration. It is even doubtful that land should be deleted from the property tax base because of the windfall gains that would screw to present landowners. There is, however, strong justification for enacting modifications in the structure of the property tax and seeking means of strengthening its administration. In the case of tax, fiscal trends and tax-income relationships are also useful from the …
