A Study Of The Academic Success Of Group Three In Halleck Hall Junior High School., Irene T. Hughes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Success or failure - there are no other two words which can create more joy or sorrow to both pupils and teachers. Some of the teachers in Halleck Hall Junior High School feel that they are not satisfied with the achievement made by the slow-learners, or low groups, with whom they work. An attempt has been made, under the direction of the principal, to classify pupils entering Halleck Hall Junior High School, into homogeneous groups. The low group composed of slow learners is known as Group Three. When the pupils enter Halleck Hall Junior High School, they are classified on …

Statement of the Problem. The purpose of this study is threefold. An attempt will be made, 1. to present and defend sixteen principles underlying an adequate guidance program for secondary schools, 2. to describe as accurately as possible, the activities of guidance that operate in two of Louisville's secondary schools, 3. to offer suggestions and to encourage administrators and teachers of these two schools, to submit recommendations, which might help to establish successful guidance services in their particular schools and which might eventually result in the organization of an adequate Guidance Program for Secondary Education in Louisville. Reasons Why Subject …

The Reaction Of Ethylcellulose With Fatty Acid And Its Application To The Varnish Industry : Ii. Ethylcellulose In Pencil Lacquers., Albert L. Kimmel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ethylcellulose was refluxed with Stearic, Oleic, Linseed Fatty acids, and a neutral Mineral Oil in the presence of a solvent. The products recovered were analyzed to determine if any possible reaction had taken place. Conditions for the reaction were carried out so that the temperatures obtained could be in the near range of varnish cooking, that is between 375 and 500°C. The I solvents used were diethylbenzene, boiling point 180oC and tetralin, boiling point 208oC. In each case approximate stoichiometric proportions of the fatty acids and ethylcellulose were used. These were refluxed to a sensible minimum viscosity of solution. The …

A Study Of Some Of The Effects Of The War Upon Town And City Schools And School Personnel In South Dakota, James C. Schooler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The repercussions of war upon the 4-year accredited high schools of South Dakota during the period from October, 1941, to October 1943, have been numerous and intense. There have been considerable discussion concerning the effects of the war upon the schools, many articles have been written on the subject, and some surveys over the United States as a whole have been made. In SOuth Dakota it appears that there is a definite shortage of qualified educational instructors to teach the physical sciences and coach athletics. Many schools are operating with only one male faculty member, the superintendent. Some schools are …

Cassius M. Clay's True American., Albert D. Kirwan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Kentucky slavery was attacked during the summer months of 1845 from within by one of the state's native sons. Cassius M. Clay, son of a Madison County slaveholder, began the publication of The True American, an abolition paper, on June 3, of that year. He caught the tide of slavery controversy in one of its numerous periods of flux. At that time opinion on the slavery question was not solidified anywhere in the country. Since 1831 most of the opposition to the "peculiar institution" was centered in the states north of the Mason-Dixon Line. but even in that vast region, …

Antiochus Epiphanes., Brougher Petty Maddox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the writer was an undergraduate he spent two Summers in the Panamint mountains above Death Valley, California. Hiking with one of the few old-timers remaining in that region he noticed that "the old desert rat" would stoop occasionally to pick up certain rocks which he would examine closely. Some went into a pouch he carried. They were later crushed and "panned." If they made a "showing" in the gold-pan, the prospector would retrace his steps and arduously search for the parent vein. In similar fashion the writer has ventured upon interesting features in the life and character of the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Why do patients leave tuberculosis sanatoria against the doctor's advice? This study of home conditions of patients who left Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Waverly Hills, Kentucky, against the doctor's advice is an attempt to answer that question. We believed that by studying data regarding age, sex, occupation and marital status of the patients who left against the doctor's advice, the Sanatorium and the community could come to some understanding of the reasons for the patient's actions. How many patients were leaving against the doctor's advice? What was the size of the problem? Did these patients have active or arrested cases of …

History And Development Of The Mental Hygiene Clinic Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary-Elizabeth O'Brien
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the field of Mental Hygiene and psychiatry has been stimulated by tensions of World War II. As in other communities there are mental hygiene and psychiatric facilities in Louisville. Kentucky. Since there is no available history compiled of this development such a study seems especially valuable at this time. How the community has gone about meeting the needs in this area of work in the past may be seen through such a study and may in turn prove a guide for future planning. The purpose of this dissertation is to trace the history and development of the Louisville …

A History Of The Financing Of The Private Family Agency, Louisville, Kentucky., Verna Schwab Will
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Finances play an important part in the operation of any business or organization. Quite often, it is a part that is little understood or studied except by the specialists in the financial field. A large proportion of the general public pays little more than a passing glance at the published financial papers of an organization. Particularly is this true of the welfare or social service organizations. Yet such agencies are usually the ones which come in for a greater share of criticism in connection with the expenditure of money. The purpose of this study, however, is not to attempt to …

Home Instruction For Physically Handicapped White Children In Louisville, Kentucky 1939-1940 To 1943-1944, Inclusive., Caroline Finzer Gray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Eighty-four children have been enrolled in Home Instruction given by the Louisville Public Schools, during the past five years, 1939-1940 to 1943-1944, inclusive. Home Instruction is given only to those children who cannot attend school, due to various physical handicaps. The writer feels that it will be profitable to examine the data collected concerning the eighty-four pupils, not only for the guidance of those intimately concerned with the Louisville program, but also for the information of similar workers in other cities and of the large numbers of lay people whose chief interest is due to their feeling that "the physically …

A History Of The Council Of Social Agencies Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary Trueheart Williamson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Community social planning has recently received the spotlight of attention under the impacts of war and its related demands for a united nation and community. But to those who have had a more intimate contact with the field of social work this is not a new development. For more than twenty years there has been in urban areas a steady growth of organizations known as councils of social agencies, welfare councils, or community councils whose job it has been to coordinate and plan the social welfare programs for the communities of which they are a part. As in other cities, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is undertaken to survey and evaluate the adequacy of convalescent facilities available for indigent persons who have been under the care of the surgical service at the Louisville General Hospital. The adequacy of convalescent care will be measured first, in relation to its scope, second, in relation to its help to the patients, and third, in its interaction with other community agencies. The study is prompted by the recognition of the fact that convalescence is a sadly neglected field of medical care. Convalescence will be defined for the purposes of this study as the more or less gradual …

A Study Of Day Care Particularly In Reference To Louisville, Kentucky., Nancy Lee Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A problem of great concern to many communities in the United States is that of day care of children of working mothers. Since the beginning of the defense program and particularly after the United States entered the war, wide publicity has been given to the problem of children left without supervision while their mothers worked. Communities that were affected by increases in population began to establish committees to cope with the situation. Numerous surveys were conducted in an attempt to measure the adequacy of existing facilities and the extent of the need for additional day care centers. Congressional action made …
