An Investigation Of Costs For Heating And Power Generation At South Dakota State College, Julius William Ulmer
An Investigation Of Costs For Heating And Power Generation At South Dakota State College, Julius William Ulmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This investigation is to determine the amount of steam necessary to heat the buildings and to generate power on the campus of South Dakota State College. It is also concerned with a comparison of the cost of producing steam by burning coal and by burning natural gas. Part of the campus buildings are heated by low pressure steam. When the turbo-generator is in operation, the turbine exhaust steam is used for heating purposes. During periods of cold weather the turbine exhaust steam is not sufficient, and therefore steam at boiler pressure is reduced to the turbine exhaust pressure through a …
Pondermotive Forces Of Electrical Origin In Liquid Dielectrics, Norma Allan Peppers
Pondermotive Forces Of Electrical Origin In Liquid Dielectrics, Norma Allan Peppers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For years the expression for the force per unit volume which arises in a liquid dielectric as a result of an electric field has been a source of discussion and controversy. Several different expressions for this volume force occur in the literature and, of these, two seem to be most prominent. Each of the expressions has many supporters. Consequently, there has been much theoretical and some experimental work concerning volume forces in a liquid dielectric. Although the most recent writers apparently have dispelled much of the mystery which has long shrouded this topic, some questions remain unanswered. Moreover, since history …
Acreage Response Of South Dakota Wheat Producers To Expected Price Changes, 1955, Richard Hoyt Kruse
Acreage Response Of South Dakota Wheat Producers To Expected Price Changes, 1955, Richard Hoyt Kruse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prices have long been considered to be an important factor influencing agricultural production. The diversity of views as to the effectiveness of prices in allocating resources in agriculture has served to emphasize the need for further research on this problem. South Dakota is primarily an agricultural state and is vitally concerned with the problem of adjustment. Geographic and economic conditions in South Dakota are widely different from other parts of the nation. This study was undertaken in order that legislators and other policy makers might have access to more research results in formulating future agricultural policies. The purpose of this …

Mysticism In Selected Early Novels Of John Steinbeck, Tom E. Kakonis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this essay is to trace the development of the concept of mysticism from selected early works of John Steinbeck to its culmination in the novel the Grapes of Wrath. The works to be discussed are the following: The Features of Heaven, To a God Unknown, In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, The Red Pony, The Grapes of Wrath, and Sea of Cortez. Such a study requires, a basic, historical knowledge in two other areas. The first involves a familiarity with Oriental specifically Hindu, mystical beliefs; the second, the early backgrounds of mysticism in American literature as …
The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser
The Changing Traditional Value System Of The Dakota Indian: A Study Of The Conflicting Value Systems Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, Clinton J. Jesser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the conclusions of anthropologists is that of cultural variability and the relativity of value systems. This means that the designs for living with its system of moral values which one society has evolved may differ considerably from those of another. Each society has their unique value system (moral code). The Dakota Indians have (or had) theirs and the people of Western civilization have theirs. As a result of the culture contact of these two groups over the past seventy-five years, the Dakota Indian has been exposed to, even coerced to follow, a value system different than his own. …
An Actuarial Study Of The Relationship Of Grades Earned In Certain High School Subjects And Curricula To Academic Success In College, And The Efficiency Of Counselor Prediction Of College Success, Leotta R. Hampton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study an attempt was made to review critically the relationship of grades earned in certain high school subjects to academic success in college. Subjects selected were American history and English IV, since special college-preparatory sections of these two courses have been devised for and required of all students graduating in the college-preparatory curriculum at Township High School District 214. The purpose of a second portion of this study was the measuring of the efficiency in the prediction of college success of those tow counselors whose special responsibility is recommendation of students to colleges and universities. In this school, …

Raw Sewage Stabilization Ponds As A Means Of Sewage Treatment, John Robert Anderson
Raw Sewage Stabilization Ponds As A Means Of Sewage Treatment, John Robert Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The successful operation of sewage stabilization ponds by a number of North and South Dakota communities during the past few years has shown this method of disposal to be adequate in taking care of the needs of small communities. Since land is relatively cheap compared to construction work involved in the building of a sewage treatment plant, and since the actual construction cost of a stabilization pond I s a comparatively small figure, this type of treatment has been readily accepted by the smaller communities. Because stabilization ponds are primarily successful due to solar radiation and vary according to climatic …
Construction And Evaluation Of The Performance Of A Horizontal Well In A Shallow, Thin Aquifer, Eugene J. Doering
Construction And Evaluation Of The Performance Of A Horizontal Well In A Shallow, Thin Aquifer, Eugene J. Doering
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since infiltration galleries have been effective as a means of securing large quantities of water from thin aquifers, the question has arisen as to whether or not a small horizontal well that would yield sufficient water for irrigation could be constructed at a cost that would be within the budget of the family-sized farm in South Dakota. If so, a subsequent problem would be the development of some method of estimating the quantity of water a particular aquifer will yield to such a well. A possible approach would be to relate a certain length of horizontal casing to a vertical …

An Evaluation Of Parliamentary Procedure Programs In South Dakota Future Farmers Of America Chaptersouth Dakota, Calvin E. Willemssen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since education at the high school level is training many students to go directly into the business and professional world as well as preparing them to attend other schools, it may be beneficial to look at one aspect of high school education to see if the students in that area are being offered adequate preparation for the challenge they face in today’s world. The Future Farmers of America is a national organization of secondary school students studying vocational agriculture. As part of its course of instruction, FFA offers a section on parliamentary procedure. The purpose of this study is to …
Student Automobiles On The College Campus, Lois Elaine Qualben
Student Automobiles On The College Campus, Lois Elaine Qualben
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two slightly related developments in recent years have greatly affected the general character of American college and university life: the great increase in enrollments, and the widespread student possession of luxuries while in college. Since much attention has been given to the effect of increased enrollments, the writer feels that the influence of the extensive possession of luxuries on the scholastic achievement merits examination. In this study, the writer intends to look at an increasingly common factor in college life—the possession of automobiles by college students and to see what, if any, significance it bears as a deterrent from study. …
Frost Action In Soils, Mustata Sevket Safak
Frost Action In Soils, Mustata Sevket Safak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Frost action generally is used, in its broad sense, to include any detrimental effect on engineering works resulting from the penetration of frost below the surface of the ground. Considerable damage is done to roads, airfields, bridges, culverts, pipelines and buildings in regions where the ground and the climatological conditions are favorable to ground freezing and thawing. The writer has reviewed most of the available material pertaining to frost action in an effort to present the problem in an authentic manner, simple, yet reasonably up to date in theory and application. This study has been made from the stand-point of …
