Reflections: A Theatrical Journey Into The Lives Of Adolescent Girls, Leah Page
Reflections: A Theatrical Journey Into The Lives Of Adolescent Girls, Leah Page
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adolescence is a difficult time for young women. Their bodies are changing and they are being asked to conform to a new set of feminine standards if they are to be accepted (Pipher 39). Studies have found that girls experience a decrease in self-esteem during this time. They are less likely to speak their minds openly and honestly, which can lead to depression and a feeling of falseness. As young women attempt to comprehend this turbulent time in their lives, they often find strength through positive relationships with others as well as from their own knowledge and self-awareness. Reflections is …
Tree Calls Of Three Treefrogs (Hyla Femoralis, H. Gratiosa, And H. Squirella): Analysis Of Environmental, Behavioral, And Acoustic Characteristics, Kristine Schad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Male frogs typically call near water at dusk to attract females for breeding. During the breeding season, male treefrogs also emit diurnal "tree calls" or "rain calls" from the tops of trees. Very little is known about tree calls, although many treefrogs use them. Tree calls may be used to attract females, deter males or be triggered by weather conditions favorable for breeding: high temperature and relative humidity, and a drop in barometric pressure. As dusk approaches, male treefrogs continue tree calls from lower in the trees, and if conditions are favorable, jump to the ground and travel to a …
A Mathematical Study Of Two Retroviruses, Hiv And Htlv-I, Dana Ali Baxley
A Mathematical Study Of Two Retroviruses, Hiv And Htlv-I, Dana Ali Baxley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we examine epidemiological models of two different retroviruses, which infect the human body. The two viruses under study are HIV or the human immunodefiency virus and HTLV-I, which is the human T lymphotropic virus type I. A retrovirus is a virus, which injects its RNA into the host, rather than it's DNA. We will study each of the different mathematical models for each of the viruses separately. Then we use MATLAB-SIMULINK to analyze the models by studying the reproductive numbers in each case and the disease progression by examining the graphs. In Chapter 1, we mention basic …

Site Directed Mutagenesis Of Lozenge: A Yeast Two-Hybrid Analysis Of Transcription Factor Protein Interaction, Lailla Boumaza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lozenge is a transcription factor. It is a member of the Runx1 homology group that includes Runt, Acute Myeloid Leukemia1, and Core Binding Factor alpha1. Expressed in the fruit fly Drosophila, Lozenge contributes to the determination of neuronal and non-neuronal cells by regulating the expression of many fate-determining transcription factors. In addition to Lozenge expression in wide varieties of tissues, it also participates in the pattern formation and specification of the photoreceptors R1/R6 and R7 and cones and pigment cells of the fly eye. A growing number of fate determining transcription factors are influenced by Lozenge during eye development. For …
Smoke And Mirrors: A Cultural-Psychological Analysis Of Tobacco Use, Michael Melczak
Smoke And Mirrors: A Cultural-Psychological Analysis Of Tobacco Use, Michael Melczak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This theoretical dissertation explores tobacco use from the perspectives of social constructivism and phenomenological depth psychology. In Part I, tobacco use is described as a cultural artifact, and transformations in tobacco use are traced through three different cultural contexts or "worlds": the indigenous or aboriginal worldview, the European and American worldview of the 17th through mid-19th centuries, and the modern American worldview (or "modernity"). In each of these worldviews, the cultural context informed and influenced (or reflected and reproduced) understandings of tobacco use. One notices the transformation of tobacco use, for example, from a god to a commodity and from …
Project Camelot And Military Sponsorship Of Social Science Research: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Ryan Hunt
Project Camelot And Military Sponsorship Of Social Science Research: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Ryan Hunt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Project Camelot" was an ambitious social science research project conceived and funded by the Army, one whose scope and level of funding was unprecedented as of its inception in 1964. It was created in order to examine the potential for "internal war" and insurgency in the "developing countries" of the world, and to identify actions that the U.S. and its allies could take to prevent or suppress such insurgencies. Historians have described the Project as an event of particular importance in the history of American social science, and have argued that it is related to significant changes in their structure …

Amphibian Colonization Of New Habitat : "If You Build It, They Will Come"., Piper Lee Roby-Thomas 1977-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 2003, Wilson Creek running through Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in central Kentucky was restored to its original winding path through a valley field. Early 20th century settlers had previously redirected this creek to run a straight path along the eastern hillside in order to maximize the valley for farming. As part of the restoration to its pre-settler path, seven ponds were created in the corridor of the old streambed, which created habitat for pond-breeding amphibians. Sampling began one year after construction was complete, and over two years the amphibian assemblages of these ponds were compared to those of …

Animal Experiment (Rabbit) To Demonstrate Changes In Trabecular Bone Mechanical Properties Over Time Using Finite Element Analysis., Shuo Yang 1974-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Decreased strength of trabecular bone is a direct effect of osteoporosis, which can be evaluated by finite element analysis. However, computational limitations have restricted previous trabecular bone analyses primarily to the linear domain. In addition, previous work was largely invasive and the corresponding finite element models were typically homogeneous. Nonlinear heterogeneous finite element analysis was used to calculate trabecular bone apparent strength directly from in vivo micro computational tomography (micro-CT) scans. Through a series of validation experiments, it was shown that this nonlinear modeling is more accurate in evaluating trabecular bone mechanics in osteoporosis than previous work. A parameter driven …

Analysis Of Nmr Spectra Using Digital Signal Processing Techniques., Jason Aaron Gearheart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since its development, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has become one of the primary methods of chemists for structure elucidation, which is the determination of a compound's molecular structure. Current software packages enable scientists to visualize the raw data produced by the spectrometer so that they can manually determine a compound's component parts. This is accomplished by manually comparing the spectrum of the mixture with various reference materials believed to be present. But these software packages can be expanded to do even more. It is the purpose of this thesis to provide an automated analysis package capable of analyzing a mixture …
Comparing The Statistical Tests For Homogeneity Of Variances., Zhiqiang Mu
Comparing The Statistical Tests For Homogeneity Of Variances., Zhiqiang Mu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Testing the homogeneity of variances is an important problem in many applications since statistical methods of frequent use, such as ANOVA, assume equal variances for two or more groups of data. However, testing the equality of variances is a difficult problem due to the fact that many of the tests are not robust against non-normality. It is known that the kurtosis of the distribution of the source data can affect the performance of the tests for variance. We review the classical tests and their latest, more robust modifications, some other tests that have recently appeared in the literature, and use …

The Internal Odyssey Of Identity: James Baldwin, Go Tell It On The Mountain, And History., Brent Nelson Lamons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates how James Baldwin thought about history and treats his first novel as an important document in extricating his construct of the past. A close reading of the work reveals that it is an examination rather than a symptom of two powerful forces that dominate Baldwin's psychology, his father and his history.
James Baldwin felt the individual interpretation of one's experience is just as important as the experience itself. The novel is an informative exposition of how people interpret their experience and how that interpretation affects their psychology. Through Go Tell It on the Mountain Baldwin recreates the …
Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia
Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electrooxidation has been used to deposit thin film polyaniline as well as its derivative - thin film poly (ortho-phenylenediamine) (POPD) and poly (meta-phenylenediamine) (PMPD) on carbon electrodes, which are subsequently used to monitor the environmental heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+ ,Cd2+) through a rather unusual "blocking" of anodic stripping for these metals. Using Hg2+ as a model, its cyclic voltammogram for a modified glassy carbon electrode with the resultant polymer shows an enhanced cathodic peak that increases linearly with the analyte ion concentration. POPD also exhibits unique selective detection for organic species. Acetaminophen and …

Regulation Of Angiogenic Factors By Pituitary Tumor Transforming Gene (Pttg) In Tumorigenesis., Mohammad Tariq Malik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pituitary tumor transforming gene ( PTTG ), also known as securing, is a novel oncogene that is expressed at high levels in most of the tumors analyzed to date. Overexpression of PTTG in mouse fibroblast(NIH 3T3) cells increases cell proliferation, induces cellular transformation and promotes tumor formation in nude mice. PTTG is a multi-domain and multifunction protein. Some functions of PTTG include inhibition of pre-mature sister chromatid separation, activation of transcription of c-myc oncogene, cell cycle regulation, and DNA repair. In some cancers such as thyroid, pituitary, esophageal, and colorectal tumors, high PTTG expression correlates with metastasis and poor prognosis. …

The designed flow chamber and pump system provided a controlled two-dimensional Poiseuille flow with average velocity of up to 4 m/s and a range of fluid stresses up to 5000 dyn/cm 2 . …
Using Auditory Evoked Brain Responses To Detect Anxious Vulnerabilities In Neonates., Kyle William Harvison
Using Auditory Evoked Brain Responses To Detect Anxious Vulnerabilities In Neonates., Kyle William Harvison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety disorders are prevalent in both adult and child populations, and are associated with significant economic and psychosocial costs. There are clearly familial patterns of transmission within the anxiety disorders, and the inherited risk is likely a non-specific vulnerability toward negative affect, with a biological-environmental interaction leading to specific manifestations within the anxiety disorders. Among the vulnerabilities toward anxiety may be information processing biases that predispose individuals to be more vigilant to novelty, processes that may be specifically associated with the right cerebral hemisphere. The current study utilized auditory event related potentials (ERPs) to explore the degree to which such …
