Aminooxy Reagents For Synthesis And Analysis : Expanding The Role Of Oximation., Sebastien Laulhe
Aminooxy Reagents For Synthesis And Analysis : Expanding The Role Of Oximation., Sebastien Laulhe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The reaction between an aminooxy moiety (RONH2) and a carbonyl group of either an aldehyde or a ketone — known as an oximation reaction — is a versatile click chemistry coupling that generates a robust oxime ether linkage. The oximation reaction is chemoselective and can be performed under mild conditions in a large variety of solvents, including water. The attractive properties of the aminooxy group and derived oximation reactions, reviewed in Chapter 1, inspired us to use this chemistry as a key feature of our research. Specifically, we prepare functionalized aminooxy compounds so that the oximation chemistry can then serve …

Comparison Of Obesity Bias, Attitudes, And Beliefs Among Undergraduate Dietetic Students, Dietetic Interns, And Practicing Registered Dietitians, Sarah E. Welborn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The obesity epidemic in the United States is increasing, and health concerns are also on the rise as they are directly related to obesity. Even though the majority of Americans are overweight or obese, prejudice and weight bias continue to be prevalent and socially accepted in a culture that tolerates discrimination towards these individuals. Health care providers, including registered dietitians, are not exempt from instigating bias towards obese patients causing a decrease in the level of care that they receive. The main purpose of this study was to compare attitudes, beliefs, and bias concerning obesity among undergraduate dietetic students, dietetic …

Assessment Of Dietary Behaviors Of College Students Participating In The Health Promotion Program Bucs: Live Well, Courtney E. Mckinney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rates of adult obesity in the United States continue to rise, especially among the college-age population who typically practice poor dietary choices, contributing to weight gain. College-age students experience a transitional phase called ‘emerging adulthood’ where they learn autonomy in many areas that influence long-term health status. The purpose of the online health promotion program BUCS: Live Well was to promote self-efficacy in ability to incorporate positive dietary changes, assess incidences of positive dietary habits after completing the program, and determine if weight status, residence, and health perceptions influence dietary behaviors. BUCS: Live Well was successful in assessing current dietary …
Detection Of Bacterial Retroelements Using Genomics, Sen Mu
Detection Of Bacterial Retroelements Using Genomics, Sen Mu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The reverse flow of genetic information can occur when a special DNA polymerase called Reverse Transcriptase (RT) copies the genetic information in an RNA molecule back into a complementary DNA. One type of RT encoding gene found in bacteria is called a retron element. Recent bacterial genome sequencing projects have revealed many examples of retron RT genes. This gene assignment is based on comparison with a few known retron RT proteins. However, RT proteins are highly diverse in their amino acid sequences, and thus the assigned identity of these RT proteins as retrons in genome databases is questionable. One way …

Very Cost Effective Partitions In Graphs, Inna Vasylieva
Very Cost Effective Partitions In Graphs, Inna Vasylieva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For a graph G=(V,E) and a set of vertices S, a vertex v in S is said to be very cost effective if it is adjacent to more vertices in V -S than in S.
A bipartition pi={S, V- S} is called very cost effective if both S and V- S are very cost effective sets. Not all graphs have a very cost effective bipartition, for example, the complete graphs of odd order do not. We consider several families of graphs G, including Cartesian products and cacti graphs, to determine whether G has a very cost effective bipartition.

Academic Achievement Of Elementary Students: A Comparison Study Of Student Athletes Versus Nonathletes, Kimberly R. Dyke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The place of sports in academic institutions has been analyzed at length for several years. However most studies focus on the participation of high school and university students in school sports. Very little research exists to suggest a positive or negative correlation between academic achievement and participation in interscholastic sports at the elementary level. As a result the relationship between academic performance and participation in school sports among elementary students in grades 4 and 5 was investigated in this study. Through an independent-samples t test analysis of 1,605 fourth and fifth grade boys and girls, it was determined that students …

Study Of Immobilizing Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots In Selected Polymers For Application In Peroxyoxalate Chemiluminescence Flow Injection Analysis, Christopher S. Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two batches of CdSe QDs with different sizes were synthesized for immobilizing in polyisoprene (PI), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The combinations of QDs and polymer substrates were evaluated for their analytical fit-for-use in applicable immunoassays. Hydrogen peroxide standards were injected into the flow injection analyzer (FIA) constructed to simulate enzyme-generated hydrogen peroxide reacting with bis-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate.
Linear correlations between hydrogen peroxide and chemilumenscent intensities yielded regression values greater than 0.9750 for hydrogen peroxide concentrations between 1.0 x 10-4 M and 1.0 x 10-1 M. The developed technique’s LOD was approximately 10 ppm. Variability of the prepared …
Preventing Skin Cancer In Adolescent Girls Through Intervention With Their Mothers, Mary K. Baker
Preventing Skin Cancer In Adolescent Girls Through Intervention With Their Mothers, Mary K. Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Indoor tanning (IT) before the age of 35 increases one’s risk for melanoma by 75%, and epidemiological data show a 6.1% annual increase in the incidence of melanomas in white women younger than age 44 in the US. Population-based studies reveal that 15% of adolescents and 8% to 14% of their primary caregivers have engaged in IT in the past year.
The compelling case for IT being a significant risk factor for melanoma, together with the high rates of IT in teen girls and their mothers, provided a strong rationale for conducting an antitanning intervention directed at mother-daughter dyads. This …

Compound Identification Using Penalized Linear Regression., Ruiqi Liu
Compound Identification Using Penalized Linear Regression., Ruiqi Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we propose a new method for compound identification using penalized linear regression. Compound identification is often achieved by matching the experimental mass spectra to the mass spectra stored in a reference library based on mass spectral similarity. In the context of the linear regression, the response variable is an experimental mass spectrum (i.e., query) and all the compounds in the reference library are the independent variables. However, the number of compounds in the reference library is much larger than the range of m/z values so that the data become high dimensional data with suffering from singularity. For …
The Nashville John School : Risk Deterrence And The Reintegrative Shaming Approach., Robin Malony Valenzuela
The Nashville John School : Risk Deterrence And The Reintegrative Shaming Approach., Robin Malony Valenzuela
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary anti-prostitution campaigns focus on curtailing “the demand” by punishing sexual service consumers. One component of this approach is a diversion program, or “john school,” offered to those who are caught buying prostitution. This ethnography focuses upon the Nashville John School (NJS), which consists of informational presentations that educate johns about the risks associated with prostitution. By employing a restorative justice approach, the NJS exemplifies elements of John Braithwaite’s “reintegrative shaming” theory (1989), which seeks to hold offenders accountable for their wrongdoing while avoiding stigmatization. This ethnographic study utilizes participant observation in the NJS, as well as individual interviews with …

Each coding sheet listed several themes such as toughness and gender stereotypes to be explored, and each character had a character profile based on the themes explored. It was predicted that the series would illustrate …
Genetic Mapping And Mechanism Of Action Of Rat Mammary Carcinoma Susceptibility Quantitative Trait Locus Mcs1b., Aaron D. Dendekker
Genetic Mapping And Mechanism Of Action Of Rat Mammary Carcinoma Susceptibility Quantitative Trait Locus Mcs1b., Aaron D. Dendekker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is a complex disease that involves genetic, epigenetic, and environmental components. High and moderate penetrant genes have been identified that affect risk to developing breast cancer; however, these risk alleles are present in a small percentage of breast cancer cases. Low penetrant modifier genes have risk-associated alleles that are common in the population. Although these genes have lower penetrance, it is expected that the majority of genetic risk to developing breast cancer is controlled by common genetic variation. Studying mechanisms of common genetic variants on breast cancer risk is difficult due to their small individual effects and overlapping …
The Feeling Of Faith : A Thomistic Account Of Religious Emotions., John K. Dryden 1976-
The Feeling Of Faith : A Thomistic Account Of Religious Emotions., John K. Dryden 1976-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a philosophical analysis of religious emotions. It draws upon Thomas Aquinas’s theory of the passions to build and apply a framework for thinking about religious emotions and their role in the spiritual life. The first two chapters are dedicated to building the theoretical framework. Chapter one outlines Aquinas’s theory of emotions in a very general way and compares this account to recent versions of cognitivism. By placing Aquinas in conversation with contemporary accounts, I show that his theory is able to capture the central insights of this mainstream philosophical view. According to the Thomistic account that emerges …

This document will discuss in detail the method by which the algorithms are implemented, the improvements that are made on the half-edge data structure, and the new features that have been added …
Development Of Novel Layered Nanoparticles For More Efficient Cancer Treatment., Thomas A. Priest
Development Of Novel Layered Nanoparticles For More Efficient Cancer Treatment., Thomas A. Priest
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is the second-most leading cause of death in the United States, with 1.66 million new cases expected to be diagnosed and over 580,000 Americans expected to die of cancer in 2013 alone. (American Cancer Society 2013) Current treatments result in damage to the healthy tissues and incomplete resections of solid tumors, but by harnessing nanotechnology, more effective treatments can be constructed. Gold nanoshells present a promising option for targeted cancer therapy. The anatomy of tumors causes the “enhanced permeability and retention” effect, which means that nano-scale particles will extravasate from the bloodstream and accumulate in the tumors. However, small …
Force Sensing Glove For Quantification Of Joint Torques During Stretching After Spinal Cord Injury In The Rat Model., Erik Seibt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An increasing amount of healthcare resources is used for the treatment and prevention of contractures in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), with stretch and passive movements remaining the most prominent intervention methods. The results of both clinical trials and animal studies in recent years have shown traditional stretch therapies to be ineffective at preventing contracture and joint immobility, and have encouraged further emphasis on evidence-based practices. However, these studies only analyzed one aspect of stretching, dosage, and failed to look at the characteristic of joint torque. Recent clinical trials have unearthed the fact that the joint torque application of …

Peg Solitaire On Trees With Diameter Four, Clayton A. Walvoort
Peg Solitaire On Trees With Diameter Four, Clayton A. Walvoort
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In a paper by Beeler and Hoilman, the traditional game of peg solitaire is generalized to graphs in the combinatorial sense. One of the important open problems in this paper was to classify solvable trees. In this thesis, we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability for all trees with diameter four. We also give the maximum number of pegs that can be left on such a graph under the restriction that we jump whenever possible.
A Mathematical Model For Antibiotic Resistance In A Hospital Setting With A Varying Population, Edward H. Snyder
A Mathematical Model For Antibiotic Resistance In A Hospital Setting With A Varying Population, Edward H. Snyder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria(ARB) is causing increased health risk and cost to society. Mathematical models have been developed to study the transmission of resistant bacteria and the efficacy of preventive measures to slow its spread within a hospital setting. The majority of these models have assumed a constant total hospital population with the admission and discharge rates being equal throughout the duration. But a typical hospital population varies from day to day and season to season. In this thesis, we apply variable admission and discharge daily rates to existing deterministic and stochastic models which examine the transmission of single and dual resistant …

Identifying Myotis Species Using Geometric Morphometrics And Its Implications For The Fossil Record And Conservation, Kyle J. Jansky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dentaries of the 6 species of Myotis that occur in the eastern United States were analyzed using landmark-based geometric morphometrics. The species could be distinguished with a high degree of accuracy. Evidence was found of a phylogenetic signal in the morphology of the Neotropical and Nearctic Myotis sub-clades. There is also evidence of convergence in the morphology of the dentary among Myotis species that feed primarily by gleaning. When analyzed together there was no evidence of sexual dimorphism among the 6 eastern U.S. Myotis, but when analyzed individually some dimorphism may be present. A sample of fossil Myotis of …
