Newspaper Ownership And The Weekly Editorial In Illinois, Mark Lee Goodman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The independently owned newspaper is fast disappearing in the United States. ~1uch like other American businesses, American newspapers have become an industry dominated by huge corporations. Ownership of newspapers in the United States is becoming more concentrated because of newspaper groups, also known as newspaper chains. A group can be defined as ownership and publication of several different newspapers in more than one location. During the twentieth century, groups have become the dominant form of ownership in the American newspaper industry. They control almost three-fourths of total daily newspaper circulation in the United States. And groups are estimated to own …

The Forgotten Realist, John Garvey Jan 1982

The Forgotten Realist, John Garvey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today the name "Hoosier" can be applied to anybody living in or coming from the state of Indiana. Many Americans first hear it as the name of Indiana University's athletic teams; tourists become familiar with the "Hoosier State" nickname which appears on interstate highway signs, travel brochures and maps. Because of the popularity ofc Kurt Vonnegut’s books in recent years, many of us have first learned the term in his work. Others think of it as a name for the landscape of James Whitcomb Riley's verse. And there are still alive some older folk among us who, like students of …

The Occurrence And Effects Of Entomophaga Grylli On Grasshopper Populations In South Dakota, Roger Allen Bohls

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect of Entomophaga grylli on grasshopper populations within South Dakota was investigated during a 2-year period. The occurrence of the fungus in regions of the state receiving 355 mm of rain during the growing season indicate pathotype 2 infection is maintained in dry environments. However, detailed epizootiol ogical studies of the fungus are needed before the potential of …

Educational, Occupational, And Residential Plans Of Youth In South Dakota, Donald E. Arwood Jan 1982

Educational, Occupational, And Residential Plans Of Youth In South Dakota, Donald E. Arwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When talking about South Dakota youth it has been popular to contend that their future is the future of South Dakota. Furthermore, newspaper reporters, politicians, and others have contended that young men and women would prefer to live in South Dakota, but that economic conditions push them to seek jobs in other states. It has also been proposed that many rural youth, though they would prefer not to, move to urban areas to seek a living. Even with these contentions, little objective research has been done to substantiate that a relationship exists between job seeking and migration for South Dakota …

A Simulation Of The Economic And Public Finance Impacts Of Industrial Development On The Community Of Brookings, South Dakota, Mark S. White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several rural communities, through the efforts of industrial development corporations or private individuals, are actively engaged in recruiting new industry, with the intent being diversification of their local economies. The goals of these efforts are the reversal of out-migration trends, new employment opportunities, increased local income, and a widened tax base. Community leaders often equate industrialization of their community with increased standards of living for the local residents. Different industries may have quite different economic and public finance impacts upon the rural communities in which they locate, depending upon the characteristics of both the industry and the community. As a …
