Psychological Distress As Mediator Between Perceived Stigma And Relationship Satisfaction Among Sexual Minorities, Desta Amber Alyse Taylor May 2012

Psychological Distress As Mediator Between Perceived Stigma And Relationship Satisfaction Among Sexual Minorities, Desta Amber Alyse Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stigma is a multi-facetted construct that permeates the daily lives of sexual minorities including perceptions of self and social interactions. While research findings are ubiquitous on the negative mental health outcomes of living with a stigmatized identity (Link & Phelan, 2001), little is known about how perceived stigma may influence relationship satisfaction among sexual minorities. The present study investigated the relationship between perceived stigma and relationship satisfaction and whether psychological distress served as a mediating mechanism. Furthermore, a unique aspect of this study is its examination of multiple domains of stigma. Results indicated that sexual minorities experienced more perceived discrimination, …

Open Fire: A Portrait Of Gun Control In U.S. And International Newspaper Articles After The 2011 Arizona Mass Shooting, Heidi L. Smathers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research sought to explore media framing theory, first introduced by Erving Goffman, which asserts that the media portray certain items in a way that affects awareness, salience and tone of those items. There has long been debate about media framing especially as it pertains to the framing of violent events. Mass shootings are of particular interest because of the graphic and often senseless nature of the crime. This study looked particularly at the 2011 Tucson, Arizona mass shooting.

A content analysis of articles between February 7, 2010, and November 8, 2011, was conducted to explore media framing of gun …

Exploring Franchise Boards : A Stakeholder Perspective., Denise M. Cumberland May 2012

Exploring Franchise Boards : A Stakeholder Perspective., Denise M. Cumberland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of franchise advisory boards, typically composed of franchisees and franchisor representatives, is common practice in domestic and international franchise systems. Because effective board collaboration requires teamwork, understanding the stakeholder relationships on these boards is critical at the beginning of any board evaluation or organization development (OD) assessment. One of the goals of OD is to help organizations ensure groups, such as boards, function synergistically. Based on stakeholder and board governance literature, a four-quadrant grid for classifying franchise board relationships was proposed. This typology suggested that franchise board relationships could be classified based on which of the four normative …

Don Carlos Janes: One-Man Missionary Society, Jeremy P. Hegi May 2012

Don Carlos Janes: One-Man Missionary Society, Jeremy P. Hegi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Don Carlos Janes (1877-1944) was arguably the most significant missions-related figure in Churches of Christ during the first four decades of the twentieth century. Early in his life, Janes traveled the United States as an evangelist, but after a life-changing encounter with missionary to Japan William J. Bishop and a subsequent trip around the world, Janes developed a passion for foreign mission. While he never served as a full time missionary, Janes devoted his life to missionary activism in Churches of Christ until his death in 1944. The size and scope of this work offended some, as they believed Janes …

"What Do You Mean I'M A Slut?!?!" : Deconstructing The Definitions Of Promiscuity Of The Collective Conscience Using Concepts From Labeling Theory And Biopower., Joshua O. Corum May 2012

"What Do You Mean I'M A Slut?!?!" : Deconstructing The Definitions Of Promiscuity Of The Collective Conscience Using Concepts From Labeling Theory And Biopower., Joshua O. Corum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term "promiscuity" is often used in academic literature and pejoratively proliferated among society at large. The definition of promiscuity has not been clearly and consistently defined within research and varies significantly from person to person. However, both research and society continue to utilize this term with the assumption of a universal meaning. This study investigated how individuals construct their personal definition of promiscuity and how the subsequent label is applied to others. This thesis also examined how the definition of promiscuity is constructed within the collective conscience and how social institutions influence that definition. The relationship between the collective …

Examining Crime Symbiosis : The Impact Of Alcohol Outlets On Violence In Nearby Neighborhood Park Environs., William Cameron Stelzig 1986- May 2012

Examining Crime Symbiosis : The Impact Of Alcohol Outlets On Violence In Nearby Neighborhood Park Environs., William Cameron Stelzig 1986-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent criminological research has shown the importance of place, as places create the opportunities required for crime to occur. This study tests for the presence of crime symbiosis, or the interactive relationship between alcohol outlets and nearby neighborhood parks. A growing body of criminological literature has identified both neighborhood parks and alcohol outlets as criminogenic land uses. The study examines the counts of off-site and on-site alcohol outlets within 500 and 1,000 feet of neighborhood park environs as predictors of violent crime in park environs. Measures of concentrated disadvantage are included in the analyses to determine if factors of the …

Emotional Labor In A Gendered Occupation : The Work Of A Female Funeral Director., Allison Scott Pruitt May 2012

Emotional Labor In A Gendered Occupation : The Work Of A Female Funeral Director., Allison Scott Pruitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hochschild (1983) stated that emotional labor has unique consequences for women. However, most studies of these consequences have been situated in feminized occupations which have wage penalties and little upward mobility (see Sweet and Meiksins, 2004). This poses a problem as it may be difficult to tease apart what stressors are the result of emotional labor and which are a part of the broader issues of feminized work. The present research suggests that the funeral industry is a unique context for the study of women's emotional labor, as it is a numerically male dominated profession (BLS, 2010). Using semi-structured, in-depth …

Visualizing Female Agency : Space And Gender In Contemporary Women's Art In Mexico., Jamie L. Ratliff May 2012

Visualizing Female Agency : Space And Gender In Contemporary Women's Art In Mexico., Jamie L. Ratliff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation outlines a theoretical model for contextualizing contemporary women's art practice in Mexico within the profound socioeconomic and political events that have taken place since 1968, characterized by the steady breakdown and eventual turnover of the Mexican state. Following the spatial theories outlined by Henry Lefebvre in The Production of Space, this study adopts the logic that social spaces are a direct production of the societies that inhabit them, as well as the social relations, ideologies, and notions of power that are espoused therein. Focusing on the artists Paula Santiago, the collective Polvo de Gallina Negra, Daniela Rossell, Minerva …

Fear Of Criminal Victimization In Relation To Specific Locations On A College Campus., Nancy M. Steinmetz 1955- May 2012

Fear Of Criminal Victimization In Relation To Specific Locations On A College Campus., Nancy M. Steinmetz 1955-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Feelings of fear on a college campus are driven by physical characteristics of a specific location as well as the demographics and past experiences of those visiting these locations. Factors such as gender, residency, race, age, class status, and other demographics, play a key role in a person's perception of their safety in a given space. Humans intuitively assess the spaces for prospect, refuge, and escape and intuition further add to the level of fear they may experience. Using a sample of students from a public university, this study examined how these factors worked together to form students' overall perceptions.

Ethnocentric Frames Across Race : The Media's Role In Activating Ethnocentrism And Public Support For Conflict Abroad., Christopher William Ledford May 2012

Ethnocentric Frames Across Race : The Media's Role In Activating Ethnocentrism And Public Support For Conflict Abroad., Christopher William Ledford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study revisits Kinder's and Kam's (2007; 2009) studies that provided political scientists with a theoretical and operational definition of ethnocentrism-our tendency to partition the world into in-groups and out-groups. They assert that the activation of ethnocentrism hinges on elite framing and issue-attention. In addition, they have shown whites to be more ethnocentric than blacks, generally. This thesis begins with, and after conducting a framing experiment, accepts the hypothesis that the media frame news ethnocentrically and that frames have a greater effect on activating ethnocentrism, fear, and support for war across white Americans than black Americans. Furthermore, my empirical analysis …

Perceptions Of Gender In Young Consumers Of Animated Films., Katherine Barnes 1980- May 2012

Perceptions Of Gender In Young Consumers Of Animated Films., Katherine Barnes 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender stereotyping of two animated films by boys and girls (N=25). Based on Bern's (1983) gender schema theory, it was hypothesized that children would stereotype Aladdin as being for males and Pocahontas as being for females, based on the gender of the lead character. Interviews with participants (five to six years old) revealed that they did not gender stereotype the two films. A majority of both boys and girls liked the two films and felt they were for boys and girls. However, they did not think a girl could rescue another …

An Examination Of Factors That Impact Persistence Among Adult Students In A Degree Completion Program At A Four-Year University., Mathew J. Bergman May 2012

An Examination Of Factors That Impact Persistence Among Adult Students In A Degree Completion Program At A Four-Year University., Mathew J. Bergman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For more than 100 years, nearly half of all undergraduate students have failed to persist to degree completion (ACT, 2010; Tinto, 1993; U.S. Department of Education, 2008). To make matters worse, adult students have consistently been victims of higher levels of attrition than their traditional student counterparts (Justice & Dornan, 2001; National Adult Attitudes Report, 2008). This study utilized the theoretical underpinnings from the Bean and Metzner (1985) Conceptual Model of Nontraditional Undergraduate Student Attrition and Braxton, Hirschy, and McClendon's (2004) Theory of Student Departure in Commuter College and Universities model to create a new model to examine variables that …

Families Of Murder Victims' Perceptions Of Capital Punishment : A Content Analysis Of What Family Members Say Following Executions., Corey Daniel Burton 1984- May 2012

Families Of Murder Victims' Perceptions Of Capital Punishment : A Content Analysis Of What Family Members Say Following Executions., Corey Daniel Burton 1984-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two common assumptions are that the family members of murder victims will achieve closure and perceive a sense of justice following the execution of their loved one's murderer. These assumptions, however, may be unfounded. Using family member statements from newspaper articles reporting on 138 executions in the United States from 2006-2011, the current study examines family member post-execution feelings and attitudes as reported in the media. Results indicate that family member closure and perceived justice following the execution, although the most preeminent themes that emerge, are still relatively uncommon. The results of the current study are discussed in the context …

Measuring And Predicting Overqualification From 1972-2010 : A Secondary Analysis Of The Pooled General Social Survey., Henry E. Curtis May 2012

Measuring And Predicting Overqualification From 1972-2010 : A Secondary Analysis Of The Pooled General Social Survey., Henry E. Curtis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rate of overqualification, defined as a person having more education or skills than their job requires them to have, has continued to grow since the issue was first identified as a significant problem. Though evidence that suggests the rate of overqualification has continued to grow, American sociologists have shown little interest in the area in most recent years while their international counterparts have looked at the issue in abundance. This study finds thatthe amount of the workforce overqualified for their jobs from 1972- 2010 has steadily increased and possible predictors of the issue are addressed. The region where one …

Love During Divorce : Development Of The Sorokin Psycho-Social Love Inventory (Spsli) And Testing Of A Predictor Model., Joseph G. D'Ambrosio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to describe the development and validation of the Sorokin Psycho-Social Love Inventory (SPSLI) and the testing of a Predictor Model of love actions for people who experienced divorce. The SPSLI is based on five dimensions of love outlined in a theory of love developed by sociologist, Pitirim Sorokin. The scale was developed with a sample of 518 individuals who were going through a divorce or had been through a divorce. It measures high love, low love and hate actions toward a former spouse. The validation of the SPSLI utilized Classical Measurement Theory which allowed …

Content Analysis Of Sports Illustrated Articles Depicting Women's And Men's College Basketball, Kalah Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite an increase in women’s participation in basketball, equal representation and portrayal of female athletes in comprehensive media coverage remains in question. This study examines the portrayal of femininity and masculinity in sports magazine articles and explores how they may reinforce hegemonic masculinity. A content analysis of Sports Illustrated articles for a full season was performed. Three themes support theories of hegemonic masculinity: comparison to male greats, mentioning male family members, and presence of default assumptions. Additionally, two themes emerged involving the tendency for sports authors to depict athletes in accordance with gender inequality. Overall, the Sports Illustrated articles analyzed …

Community Participation And Travel Choice: An Analysis Of Central Florida New Urban And Conventional Suburban Residents, Laura P. Mikovsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between the built environment and social and transportation outcomes when comparing traditional and conventional suburban neighborhoods, but much remains to be learned about whether New Urbanism can produce similar results. Among studies where new urban neighborhoods have been assessed, most have centered on regions with highly-utilized public transit systems and with climates that are amenable to utilitarian physical activity. This research sought to build on the existing research base through direct comparison of new urban and conventional suburban neighborhoods in central Florida, a region with an under-developed transit system and a climate that renders …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationships between interorganizational network development and sustainability, organizational capacity for emergency management, technology utilization, and community disaster resiliency. It is proposed that cross sector and interorganizational collaboration (i.e., network development and sustainability), information communication technology (ICT) utilization, and organizational capacity have a positive impact on disaster resiliency. Disaster resiliency is measured with a three dimensional metric which includes effectiveness of disaster response, effectiveness of disaster recovery, and adaptive capacities. A questionnaire was sent to organizations that are part of the emergency management system in 11 counties in Central Florida. These organizations were identified by each county's …

The Relationship Between Teacher Cultural Competency And Student Engagement, Erin Nicole Robinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory study investigated teachers' cultural competency and their students' engagement within international high schools located in Hong Kong. Cultural competency is defined as a combination of knowledge about cultural groups as well as attitudes towards and skills for dealing with cultural diversity (Betancourt, 2003). The literature indicates that cultural competency will continue to play an increasingly important role in the professional work place as culturally diverse people become more interdependent. When examining the classroom experience, cultural competency equates to a teacher's ability to successfully instruct and engage culturally different students.

The students in this study reported over 30 different …
