The Effect Of National Board Certification On Burnout Levels In Educators, Tanya Judd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teacher attrition and retention has become a major issue facing education policymakers and practioners as our nation's school age population continues to grow, but the teaching workforce does not. This study seeks to examine the impact of certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) on burnout levels in educators. The potential benefits to teachers who pursue NBPTS certification include a sense of professional pride, new leadership roles and responsibilities for teachers, recognition of outstanding teaching practice, and higher salaries (Shapiro, 1995). Some of these potential rewards seem to address a number of the factors that are related …

International Social Work Best Practices Curriculum For Schools Of Social Work., Stephen Ulrich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1979, the U.S. President's Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies stated that to function successfully in the next century, all adults would need more knowledge about our interdependent world, awareness of other peoples, and greater sensitivity to global attitudes and customs. Social work is deeply rooted in the tradition of promoting social justice and in the profession's commitment to concern for culturally diverse groups. It is increasingly felt that social workers must acquire skills and attitudes that will enable them to effectively intervene with clients from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds. The inclusion of international content into social …

Psycholinguistic Coherence Of Emotion States., Jim A. Yockey May 2006

Psycholinguistic Coherence Of Emotion States., Jim A. Yockey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

How do words represent emotional states, and how closely are they clustered to an actual emotion? Opinions vary as to how many emotions there are, and whether (or which) emotions are basic. Generally, many agree that basic emotions include fear, anger, joy, sadness, and disgust. Some researchers include surprise, shame, interest, and others as derived emotions. However, all proponents of basic emotions confirm that each emotion reflects a unique motivational and behavioral tendency. These basic emotions are significant in that they represent distinct modes of action and are physiologically distinguishable. Yet, what of the myriad of other words humans use …

Interprofessional Collaboration Between Criminal Justice And Mental Health Practitioners Regarding Mentally Ill Offenders: Perception Of Collaboration, Christopher Sharp Jan 2006

Interprofessional Collaboration Between Criminal Justice And Mental Health Practitioners Regarding Mentally Ill Offenders: Perception Of Collaboration, Christopher Sharp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The federal program of deinstitutionalizing psychiatric facilities has resulted in a well documented, ever-increasing mentally ill population in the nation's prisons and jails. Historically, the criminal justice system has maintained a laissez-faire attitude toward the mentally ill, and only became involved with the mentally ill when a crime had been committed. As such, the President's Mental Health and Criminal Justice Consensus Project was developed to explore ways that the two systems could work together to address the growing problem of the mentally ill offender. However, challenges arise because the criminal justice system has typically been viewed as a loosely coupled, …

First Person Perspectives Of The Impact Of Segregation And The Civil Rights Movement On Southern White Racism, Jeff Dockswell Jan 2006

First Person Perspectives Of The Impact Of Segregation And The Civil Rights Movement On Southern White Racism, Jeff Dockswell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s profoundly changed the lives of many young southern White citizens. Southern racism was a product of traditional indoctrination common in the culture of the Old South. During the generations after slavery to the Civil Rights Era, vulnerable White children were typically exposed to racist and prejudiced influences from families, fellow citizens, education, popular culture, and segregation laws established within their communities. The Civil Rights Movement brought forth elaborate legal reforms that broke segregation and enabled integration programs to take place at schools and other public institutions, which ultimately expanded many southerners' …

Ignorance And Marital Bliss: Women's Education In The English Novel, 1796-1895, Mary Tobin Jan 2006

Ignorance And Marital Bliss: Women's Education In The English Novel, 1796-1895, Mary Tobin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mary Hays's Memoirs of Emma Courtney (1796) and Mary Wollstonecraft's Maria, or The Wrongs of Woman (1798) demonstrate the futility of educating women, given Britain's law of coverture; they expose the impracticality of ideal women presented in Jean Jacques Rousseau's Émile (1762) and James Fordyce's Sermons to Young Women (1766); and they demand educational parity between the sexes. Although novelists throughout the nineteenth century revisit and reshape all four authors' ideas, by 1895 in Jude the Obscure, when Sue Bridehead fails to achieve sexual equality despite enjoying educational parity, Thomas Hardy concludes that educating women remains futile.

This cycle begins …

School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Cacrep School Counseling Standards, Sandra M. Frey-Mckeown Jan 2006

School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Cacrep School Counseling Standards, Sandra M. Frey-Mckeown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School administrators have broad influence on the selection and role of school counselors. However, administrators' training programs give them little, if any, understanding of the standards (CACREP) to which school counselors are trained and, perhaps more importantly, no information about the school counselors' role as defined by the counseling profession (Ballard and Murgatroyd, 1999; Borders and Drury, 1992; Fitch et al., 2001; Louis et al., 2001; Ponec and Brock, 2000) The purpose of this study was to describe how school administrators view the importance and use of the CACREP School Counseling Standards when hiring school counselors. Questionnaires were mailed to …

Does Caring Matter?: A Qualitative Study Of Urban African American Alternative School Students Perceptions Of Their School Experiences, Past And Present, Victoria Berger Jan 2006

Does Caring Matter?: A Qualitative Study Of Urban African American Alternative School Students Perceptions Of Their School Experiences, Past And Present, Victoria Berger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A cultural mismatch among African American school students and their teachers, due to diverse values, norms, and expectations, often provokes inappropriate teacher response to student conduct, thereby inciting disruptive student behavior. The management of this diversity when the environment is devoid of a teacher's sensitivity to the student's life can impact students' behavior, and ultimately, initiate an alternative school referral. This study examines such student-teacher interactions through the lens provided by the analogous dynamics of iatrogenic harm, wherein an intervention by a medical or other specialist results in additional impairment or disease. This study intends to reveal, through the voice …

A Comparison Of Quality Of Life In Adult Patients With Heart Failure In Two Medical Settings: A Heart Failure Clinic And A Physician Practice, Janet Bischof Jan 2006

A Comparison Of Quality Of Life In Adult Patients With Heart Failure In Two Medical Settings: A Heart Failure Clinic And A Physician Practice, Janet Bischof

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heart Failure (HF), a major chronic disease that affects 4.8 million Americans, traditionally is medically managed by a primary care physician, with acute treatment at hospital emergency rooms often followed by inpatient admission. Ongoing support (prevention, diagnosis, treatment, intervention, symptom management, and end of life care), education, and intervention over the continuum are important to manage HF. The Modeling Role Modeling theory (Erickson, Tomlin, and Swain), is the study's conceptual framework. When an individual knows about their illness, they mobilize internal/external resources to gain, maintain, or promote equilibrium. These resources affect daily activities. The purpose of this descriptive study is …

Caregiver Burden And Coping Responses For Females Who Are The Primary Caregiver For A Family Member Living With Hiv/Aids In Kenya, Veronica Kimemia Jan 2006

Caregiver Burden And Coping Responses For Females Who Are The Primary Caregiver For A Family Member Living With Hiv/Aids In Kenya, Veronica Kimemia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Caring for a family member who is ill can be a draining experience (Cooper et al., 2006; Daire, 2002; Zarit et al, 1980). Providing care for a family member that is living with HIV/AIDS is potentially even more stressful because of social meanings associated with HIV/AIDS infection (Stajduhar, 1998) and the contagious nature of the HIV virus (Powell-Cope & Brown, 1992). Research indicates that most caregivers are female (Bunting, 2001; Songwathana, 2000). In Africa women bear the brunt of the burden of providing care for family members who are living with HIV/AIDS (Mushonga, 2001; Olenja, 1999). This study examined coping …

An Investigation Of Altruism And Personality Variables Amongbeginning Counseling Students, Laura Schmuldt Jan 2006

An Investigation Of Altruism And Personality Variables Amongbeginning Counseling Students, Laura Schmuldt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Altruism is loosely defined as a desire to help others as well as acts and behaviors towards that end, particularly when no expectation of personal gain or reward exists (Batson, Fultz, Schoenrade & Paduano, 1987). It seems likely that individuals who choose to pursue acareer in counseling might be doing so out of some altruistic interest; in other words a desire to come to the aid of others in distress. It has been noted as well that some individuals may enter the counseling profession based more on self-interest; for example, as "wounded healers" hoping to work on personal issues (Wheeler, …

Tya Methodology Twentieth-Century Philosophy, And Twenty-First Century Practice: An Examination Of Acting, Directing, And Dramatic Literature, Allen Mccoy Jan 2006

Tya Methodology Twentieth-Century Philosophy, And Twenty-First Century Practice: An Examination Of Acting, Directing, And Dramatic Literature, Allen Mccoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the twentieth century, theatre for young audiences (TYA), or children's theatre, has been situated as something "other" or different than adult theatre, a kind of theatre--but not really theatre, a construct which opened the door to numerous "how to" philosophies geared specifically toward the theatre for young audiences practitioner. As a twenty-first century theatre practitioner, I am interested in how these philosophies are situated within or against current professional practices in the TYA field. This interest led me to the main question of this study: What are the predominant twentieth-century philosophies on acting, directing, and dramatic literature in the …

Legacy Children : Whose Legacy Are They?, Pamela Nolley Tungate 1968-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Adoption and Safe Families Act created specific outcomes for permanency for children in foster care. The purpose of these outcomes is to decrease the number of children in long term foster care. Seven years have passed since ASFA was signed into law. Audits completed in each state by federal reviewers have found that no state has meet ASFA's primary outcome of permanency and stability of placement for foster children. A number of foster children are still spending long periods of time in foster care. This project sought to identify barriers to permanency for a sample of Kentucky's long term …

Participants were required to (a) be over 18 years old, (b) currently reside in the United States, (c) have …

The Alternatives To Detention Program : Assessment Of One Kentucky County's Efforts To Deinstitutionalize Status Offenders., Arthur Hayden May 2005

The Alternatives To Detention Program : Assessment Of One Kentucky County's Efforts To Deinstitutionalize Status Offenders., Arthur Hayden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the beginning of the juvenile justice movement in the United States over a century ago, considerable debate has persisted among policymakers and practitioners concerning the causes of juvenile offending and the appropriate responses to control it. Although the juvenile justice system was conceived and developed to provide individualized, benevolent treatment to young offenders, the system has gradually shifted to resemble a more punitive, adult criminal justice model. While presently the system includes characteristics of both the juvenile and adult justice models, future directions are uncertain. This is problematic for young offenders who need and deserve more solicitous care in …
