Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus Jan 1957

Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms of the genus Listeria have stimulated a great deal of interest as a result of their pathogenicity and affinity for the central nervous system. The clinical condition produced by this organism is known as listeriosis, or in ruminants as “circling disease”. The organism was described by Murray, Webb and Swann in 1926 as the causative agent of an eqizootic infection in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs. Their observations showed that the disease produced emaciation, abundant exudate in serous cavities, necrotic foci in and on various organs, and a marked increase in monocytes circulating in the blood stream. The name …

Obstacles To Increased Production Of Meat-Type Hogs : A Report Of Surveys Of Swine Producers And Marketing Agencies, Edward Dailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The improvement of product quality is an end constantly sought by those who produce goods for sale in competition. This is especially true for farmers whose varied products compete with one another and with industrial goods in the case of fiber. Dairy farmers, wool growers, wheat farmers, livestock men, truck farmers and others have all sought to improve the quality of their products as a means of both increasing the market and maintaining their respective share of the existing market. One of the most concentrated and extensive efforts in quality improvement has been by the swine industry. Practically all groups, …

Why South Dakota And Minnesota Vocational Agriculture Instructors Have Remained In The Profession, Roger A. Heller Jan 1957

Why South Dakota And Minnesota Vocational Agriculture Instructors Have Remained In The Profession, Roger A. Heller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is quite obvious that any person who remains in a certain occupation or profession for some length of time does so for one or more specific reasons. Teachers seemingly then, must have some reason for their tenure in their profession. There have been many studies in the past few years, giving reasons why teachers leave the field. The Research Bulletin for Education in South Dakota indicates that of the 7345 teachers in our public and parochial schools in 1952-53, a total of 1912 did not return to South Dakota classrooms for the 1953-54 school year. This is a matter …

A Study Made To Determine The Muscular Fitness Status Of A Group Of Sioux Indian And Caucasian Children As Determined By The Krausreber Test Of Minimum Muscular Fitness, Melvin E. Logterman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American people as a whole were aroused to the necessity of exercise and physical fitness when they became acquainted with the statistics on the men rejected from military service during World War II. Since World War II, increased interest in physical fitness has become evident. Several recent conferences, on the national level, have been held to discuss the subject of physical fitness of our youth. These conferences have been brought about, mainly, as a result of the findings revealed by the Kraus-Weber Test of Minimum Muscular Fitness. In South Dakota, one could question the physical fitness status of the …

The Use Of An Advisory Council In A Vocational Agriculture Department, Raymond G. Reiff Jan 1957

The Use Of An Advisory Council In A Vocational Agriculture Department, Raymond G. Reiff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research problem is a study of the use of advisory councils in vocational agriculture departments. Advisory groups have been used extensively in connection with many institutions and organizations in democratic societies. Public educational agencies, however, have been slow to accept and use advisory groups even though they have been recommended highly by authorities in education. In view of this discrepancy, this study is designed to investigate the use made of advisory councils in a vocational agriculture department. Unfortunately, in too many instances an undue share of the instructor’s time is devoted to a particular activity in which the department …

Studies Concerned With Selenium Poisoning In Rats, Robert David Romanowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Part I. Studies of the effect of dietary carbohydrate and fat.--Part II. Studies of the effect of adding various fractions of linseed oil meal to the diets, including chemical work on the fractions.

The selenium poisoning problem has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota. In these two states, the damage to farm animals has been of great concern to farmers and ranchers in certain areas. The search for control measures against selenium poisoning has involved the testing of purified chemical compounds and natural food products. Purified chemical compounds found to be somewhat effective against selenium poisoning have been …

A Case Study Report Of 29 South Dakota State College Freshman Men With Low Physical Fitness Indices, Jack K. Richardson Jan 1957

A Case Study Report Of 29 South Dakota State College Freshman Men With Low Physical Fitness Indices, Jack K. Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last quarter century the life of the agrarian people of South Dakota has changed from one of heavy physcial activity to one which could be described, in comparison, as sedentary. The children have quickly become attracted to this easier life and have progressively made life even less active, physically. It is common knowledge that growing child must have strenuous activity for complete biological development. It is the responsibility of the school to provide the child with a complete education which takes care of his physical, social, emotional as well as his mental needs. As one looks in on …

Some Factors Affecting 1957 Acreage Reserve Participation In The South Dakota Wheat Area, Allan M. Severson Jan 1957

Some Factors Affecting 1957 Acreage Reserve Participation In The South Dakota Wheat Area, Allan M. Severson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Agricultural Act of 1956, which contains the Soil Bank Act, was enacted in the spring of 1956. The soil bank program is divided into two phases, the acreage reserve and the conservation reserve. The acreage reserve is available to farmers with acreage allotments for the basic commodities, which are wheat and corn in South Dakota. The farmer takes part in the acreage reserve program by signing a one year agreement and reducing his acreage below the assigned allotment on his farm. In return for taking the land out of production, the farmer will receive a payment for each acre …

A Basic Tool List For A New Vocational Agricultural Shop In South Dakota, Kenneth Bohuslav Jan 1957

A Basic Tool List For A New Vocational Agricultural Shop In South Dakota, Kenneth Bohuslav

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Some confusion and misunderstanding is evident as to the essential tools required for vocational agricultural and industrial arts shops. An attempt will be made in this study to suggest a basic tool list for an average vocational agricultural shop in South Dakota. Some lay people who visit the vocational agricultural shop are surprised that certain equipment generally found in industrial arts shops, like wood shapers, wood turning lathes or thickness planners, has been omitted. Frequently they do not realize that the objectives of a vocational agricultural shop are very different from those of an industrial arts shop. As a result …

Tenant Interest In Alternative Leasing Arrangements In Moody County, South Dakota, 1955, Vernon E. Bau Jan 1957

Tenant Interest In Alternative Leasing Arrangements In Moody County, South Dakota, 1955, Vernon E. Bau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Farm leasing arrangements are important in eastern South Dakota. In 1954, 48 percent of all farm land in that area was farmed by tenants. In the entire state, 46 percent of all agricultural land was rented and 68 percent of the operators leased all or part of the land they operated. Between 1880 and 1940 the trend in farm tenancy was steadily increasing. While there has been a decline in the percentage of tenancy since 1940, this appears to be due to the very favorable period of production and prices. Because of the present price-cost squeeze, the percentage of tenants …

A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers Jan 1957

A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A bizarre organism was isolated in 1953 in a Castaneda blood culture flask in an attempt to determine the cause of septicemia in a child. It was discovered that the organism causing this septicemia was morphologically and physiologically similar to one of the organisms causing rat bite fever, which to this time had never been isolated in South Dakota. It was impossible under the circumstances to make any positive identification of the organism. Microscopic slides were saved with the expectation that circumstances would become favorable for research with the suspected organism, Streptocaillus monilformis. It was decided that a study centered …

Factors Influencing The Consolidation Of Cooperative Creameries In South Dakota, Ivan R. Hanson Jan 1957

Factors Influencing The Consolidation Of Cooperative Creameries In South Dakota, Ivan R. Hanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For several years, the dairy industry has been making an adjustment to consumer demand. The per capita consumption of butter declined from 17.3 pounds in 1939 to 9.2 pounds in 1955. Along with this change has come an adjustment in the number of creameries operating in South Dakota. The number of plants decreased from 120 in 1942 to 73 in 1957. The largest decline was among the plants producing less than 500,000 pounds of butter annually. Two basic approaches to this situation have been taken by the dairy industry. One method has been the use of advertising to increase consumer …

Comparative Study Of The Scholastic Ability, Scholastic Achievement And Activity Participation Of Home Economics Students At South Dakota State College, Deloris E. Mangels

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The status of the professional home economist is dependent at least partially on the relative standing of the home economics student to other students. While it is recognized that additional factors influence the home economist’s status upon graduation, it is felt that certain knowledge concerning the background of the home economics student would provide valuable information basic to developing a better understanding of home economists and their professional. This study is designed primarily as an investigation of the students enrolled as home economics majors at South Dakota State College. It concerns comparative data of the home economics and the non-home …
