Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problems of this thesis are: first, to trace the chronological development of periodicals printed in South Dakota from the date of the first known periodical printed in Dakota Territory through December 31, 1930; second, to study the types of periodicals produced; and third, to compile a check list as complete as possible of South Dakota periodicals during the period chosen for study. The date December 31, 1930 was chosen as a convenient cut-off date since few periodicals began after that date. The chronological development of those magazines published before 1930 was continued until suspension or to the present date. …

A Study Of Seventh Grade Problems Compiled Into A Check List, Catherine Thurston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transaction from the sixth to the seventh grade for the early adolescent has been a long recognized problem. Various schools have tried different methods to make it smooth and more pleasant since this is a critical period physically, emotionally, and socially because of the changes taking place within the individual. The curriculum has been changed and shaped around the needs of the early adolescent. Recent courses in guidance and years of experience in teaching have pointed out the fact clearly that the early adolescence has many concealed problems with which they are wrestling, and from which they seek relief. …

An Analysis Of Front Page News Pertaining To Juveniles In South Dakota Daily Newspapers For The First Three Months Of 1960 With Regard To Favorable And Unfavorable Content, Harlan S. Stensaas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Newspapers have often been accused of emphasizing the sensational giving minimum attention to the non-violent or “good” news in which young people are involved. Evidence to support or to disprove such accusations has, however, been lacking. The accusations have evidently been made on a basis of casual, informal observation of the media and on the basis of public opinion polls. The teen age group, then, is in the public eye and the impression which the public gets is perhaps obtained largely through the mass media. The question which arises would be, “is the press fair in its presentation by Gilbert …

A Comparison Study Of Certain Aspects Of Development, Achievement, And Adjustment Between Children Of Working Mothers And Children Of Non-Working Mothers, Joan Clancy Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the ever present change in our society more and more mothers are leaving their homes to seek employment. While some women must of necessity work outside the home, the number of those who work for other reasons, such as satisfaction, companionship, and relief from boredom, is becoming greater daily. The national manpower council in its publication, Womanpower, reported the impact of mothers working on the welfare of their children has probably received more widespread attention than any other issue resulting from the increased number of women in the labor market. If the overall development of the child is best …

Physical fitness has always been an important part of an athletic program, and it has always been highly regarded for our servicemen during war years. But people who were concerned with our overall fitness brought out the fact that this fitness decreases markedly after an athletic season and after a war. This report by Dr. Kraus attired our nation’s leaders to such an extent that President Eisenhower created a council on Youth Fitness and had numerous meetings to discuss the fitness problem and how it could be improved. The American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation joined in the …

An Analysis Of Prices Paid By Fifteen Eastern South Dakota Slaughter Hog Market Outlets, 1959-1960, Gene E. Murra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years there has been an increasing tendency for some commodities, particularly livestock, dairy, and poultry products, to be marketed through a decentralized marketing system. The eastern South Dakota hog producer no longer has only one market outlet through which he must market his slaughter hogs, but rather has a choice of several market outlets. The hog industry has been a major source of income to the eastern South Dakota farmer during recent years. The cash income from this industry in 1959 was $108,109,000 which was second only to the income from cattle and calves. In a perfect market …

A Study Of Selected Factors Related To Level Of Living On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Joseph F. Powers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The eager spread of Western society with its insatiable desire for new lands and raw materials has brought with it an exposure to cultures often diametrically opposed to western concepts and attitudes. As contact with alien cultures was made, resistance to plans for “progress” was often experienced and the “primitive” peoples were judged to be irrational savages. The westward advance of our fore-father is written across the pages of history in the bold of the American Indians. “When our ancestors landed on this continent they first fell upon their knees and then upon the aborigines.” Needless to say, the Indian …

Cooperative regional studies by experiment stations and school lunch studies in several states have covered many phases of nutritional status for various population groups in recent years. Investigators agrees that there is need for further information in regard to the dietary practices and nutritional status of adolescents, and there appears to be the greatest concern with respect to adolescent girls. The average annual birth rate for Indians in the …

A Status Survey Of The Requirements Of Thirteen Teacher Training Institutions Offering Baccalaureate Degrees In Elementary Education, Kenneth Ellwood Fritz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The demand for more and better qualified teachers has risen sharply in the past decade. The increasing population of the United States has been one factor contributing heavily to this demand. Another factor having considerable influence in recent years is the “Sputnik scare” brought forth by the launching of the Russian satellite on October 4, 1957. Particularly since that time, the American public has been more education conscious than in the past. The demand for a better quality in teaching has been more noticeable than in the past. It has been in the field of mathematics and science that the …

A Study Of The Attitudes Of South Dakota State College Debaters Toward Extracurricular Debate, Carol Hammer Bowles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Debate activities hold an important position in most college and university extracurricular activity programs. Debate is an activity which involves an extensive amount of work and time on the part of both the participants and the faculty. Some teachers feel that the time spent on debate activities is excessive in terms of the educational value received by the student. Writers in the field of speech have frequently discussed the value of debate to the college student. For example, The proponents of debate tell us that it is an admirable form of speech activity for training students to think clearly and …

A Study Of Educational And Promotional Programs Of Certified Seed As Evaluated By Certified Seed Growers And Certification Officials, J. Duane Colburn Jan 1960

A Study Of Educational And Promotional Programs Of Certified Seed As Evaluated By Certified Seed Growers And Certification Officials, J. Duane Colburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past few years, due to the competition which certified seed has experienced from commercial brands, more emphasis has been placed on the promotion of certified seed. Different brands, blends, and non-certified seed have been sold with the aid of extensive advertising and promotional schemes. Consequently, many certified seed producers and dealers have begun to publicize their product to meet outside competition. It appears that no longer does certified seed sell to the prospective grower unless the advantages of its use are publicized to encourage the use of this superior seed. Certification of seed is conducted by either a …

An Analysis Of Newspaper Usage Of 188 News Releases Issued By The South Dakota Department Of Game, Fish And Parks, Marshall Gall Jan 1960

An Analysis Of Newspaper Usage Of 188 News Releases Issued By The South Dakota Department Of Game, Fish And Parks, Marshall Gall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The publicity writer or information specialist is charged with informing as many people as possible about the institution for which he works—whether it is a government agency, a university or a commercial enterprise. To do this, he channels his supply of information to as many outlets as possible—radio, television, and as many newspapers as might conceivably have use for the material. This puts the publicity writer at a disadvantage in the matter of knowing his public. He cannot read all the newspapers, listen to all the radio newscasters, nor watch all the television programs that receive his material. Therefore he …

A Study Of Student Evaluation Of The Freshman English Course Of South Dakota State College, Charles E. Brickwedel Jan 1960

A Study Of Student Evaluation Of The Freshman English Course Of South Dakota State College, Charles E. Brickwedel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study grew out of the work done by Walter C. Daniel, a graduate student at South Dakota State College, on a thesis completed by him in June of 1959. His study sought to discover the attitudes which the staff teaching technical subjects at this institution held concerning the adequacy if the English preparation of the students in their classes. It was at his suggestion that I became interested in the other side of the coin: What do the student themselves think of their preparation in English and the basic language skills if reading, writing, and grammar? Accordingly, the purpose …

Economic And Organizational Aspects Of Cooperative Feedyards, Harlan J. Dirks Jan 1960

Economic And Organizational Aspects Of Cooperative Feedyards, Harlan J. Dirks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the past few years the cattle feeding industry in the United States has undergone many physical, technological changes. One of the most noticeable changes has been the growth of commercial and large-scale cattle feeding operations. Practically all of these beef factories are located on the west coast and other states in the southwest. States where most of the commercial and large-scale feeding is done include: California, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, and Nebraska. In California, for example, 68 per cent of the cattle on feed are fed in lots of over 10,000 head. There are a number of reasons …

A Study Of The Provisions Made For The Gifted Students In Public Secondary Schools In Eastern South Dakota, Mervin J. Healy Jan 1960

A Study Of The Provisions Made For The Gifted Students In Public Secondary Schools In Eastern South Dakota, Mervin J. Healy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For some time educators have been concerned with the problems of the gifted student and with the problems these students present our schools. For the most part of our schools are geared to the average student and educators have been cognizant of the possible waste of rich human resources. Many persons feel that the gifted students of South Dakota, as well as other states, are entitled, by virtue of our democracy, to a full development of their potentials. When better education for our youth is spoken of, one must keep this thought uppermost in mind: good education is the best …
