Isolation And Characterization Of Fecal Streptococci From Surface Waters In South Dakota, Jerome Edward Tiede

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms referred to as "fecal streptococci" or "enterococci" have been studied as possible indicators of pathogenic bacteria of fecal origin since their· discovery. In Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (1957), the "enterococci" are classified as Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens, Streptococcus faecalis var. zyrnogenes and Streptococcus durans. Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus equinus do not meet all the criteria of the enterococcus group. However, they are found in great numbers in certain fecal material. These organisms, and the”enterococci" are collectively referred to as "fecal streptococci." The unavailability of satisfactory methods and of selective media has prevented the acceptance of these …

An Evaluation Of The Pre-College Guidance Received By The College Dropout And The College Persister, Douglas John Soule

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The amount of pre-college information that college dropouts received, as compared to college persisters, was the focal point of this study. This factor, along with certain external and internal forces, may determine the extent of college success. The objectives of this investigation have been to determine if there exists differences in the amount of pre-college information college dropouts received as compared to college persisters. Specifically, this investigation will seek answers to the following questions: 1. Is there a difference in the number of visits the dropout and the persister had with his high school counselor? 2. Is there a difference …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transition of sugar beet production from Western South Dakota to the southeastern area of the state, in 1964 and 1965, brought many changes in cropping practices. These changes occurred in the preparation of the seedbed, the seeding process, cultivation practices and methods of haresting. The farmers, who switched to beet production, in this area were confronted with cropping practices that were completely foreign to them. They were offered assistance by Sugar Beet Company fieldmen, Cooperative Extension personnel and South Dakota State University research personnel. With an experienced background in sugar beet production, the company fieldmen were able to direct …

Patterns Of Change In The Spatial And Functional Aspects Of Trade Centers And Trade Areas In South Dakota, Ralph James Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rapid changes have occurred in the Great Plains over the years. At the turn of the century, the small towns that dotted the country-side served as full-service centers for the surrounding territory. They provided all the necessary marketing facilities and consumer goods as well as acting as centers for social functions. In the intervening years, some of these centers have increased tremendously in size while others have ceased to grow or have, in fact, declined. The profound economic and technological advances in farming, marketing, transportation, and merchandising have affected the number, size, functions, and viability of the cities and towns. …

A Study Of Resource Allocation On Farms Engaged In Swine Production In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert Lincoln Borgers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken to compare alternative livestock programs on southeastern South Dakota farms. Variations in hog production have been emphasized since swine feeding accounts for much of the income generated within the community. In addition to the amount of income, stability of income, risk, capital and labor requirements have been compared as limiting factors to be seriously considered. Diminishing numbers of farmers and new pork production methods have caused remaining farmers and new pork production methods have caused remaining farmers to reassess use of scarce inputs and new means of successful swine raising. Some questions which arise in the …

The Fish Population Of Lake Poinsett, South Dakota, As Indicated By The Catch, James C. Congdon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gill nets, trap nets, an otter trawl, and a boom-type electric shocker were utilized to obtain samples of the fish population of Lake Poinsett, South Dakota. The species and size composition of the samples differed significantly with time of season, time of day, location on the lake, and type of gear. Decreased activity following spawning was the apparent cause of a midsummer decline in gill net and trap net catches of black bullhead, black crappie, and white crappie. A late summer increase in the catch of yearling black bullheads, crappies, white bass, carp and bigmouth buffalo was attributed to an …

Most of the lakes studied exhibited continuous circulation except when ice covered. Thermocline formation was observed in six of the lakes. Light transmission was influenced by turbidity, and varied greatly within individual lakes and among lakes. Dissolved oxygen concentrations ranged from near saturation to less than the recommended minimum for fish life. All likes studied were basic ranging from a pH of 7.1 to 11.3. Specific conductance of lakes occupying open basins …

The high price of butter compared with the substitute product …

A Historical Analysis And Comparative Classification Of The Use Of Computers In The Typographic Industry, Harvey R. Levenson Jan 1968

A Historical Analysis And Comparative Classification Of The Use Of Computers In The Typographic Industry, Harvey R. Levenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although developments of the past several decades confirm a revolutionary expansion of graphic arts technology, the printing industry has traditionally been known for its lack of technological progress. It is frequently stated that printing techniques, until recently, were considered to be approximately 50 years behind other industries with regard to technological advancement. Such conditions were particularly true in the area of typesetting. To witness the unprogressive implements being used, all one had to do was visit a typica1 composing room entangled with the awkward mechanisms of conventional Linotypes, Intertypes, and other similar typesetting devices. Such composing systems are steadily becoming …

Response: A Study Of The Genesis, Nature, And Meaning Of The Aural Imagery In Henry Vaughan's Silex Scintillans, Lavonne Niklason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The traditional symbols of the Christian life of prayer are readily discoverable in Silex Scintillans, the poetic record of one man's quest for God; they both constitute its deepest meaning and establish its proper context. It is, however, clear that the poet, Henry Vaughan, has embodied these universal symbols in patterns of his own arrangement. In this arrangement, the poetic imagery, which forms the patterns by which the symbolism is understood, is of exceptional importance to his poems in its inspiration, structure, effect, and meaning. The poet’s individual vision, communicated by his imagery, encompasses a world of marked Christian contrasts: …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota was the second most rural state in the North Central Region in 1960 with 61 percent of the state’s population living in rural areas. Only North Dakota, with 65 percent rural population, surpassed South Dakota within the North Central Region. Even though the state gained 4 percent in population from 1950 to 1960, there was a total net out-.migration of slightly over 14 percent. There were 121, 736 more births than deaths in South Dakota between …

Viscoelastic Flow Past A Wedge With A Soluble Coating, Franklyn W. Roitsch Jan 1968

Viscoelastic Flow Past A Wedge With A Soluble Coating, Franklyn W. Roitsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the apparent suppression of turbulent energy dissipation, viscoelastic materials make excellent drag reducing agents. The applications of viscoelastic fluids in this role have been multiplying rapidly since they can be used as drag reducing agents for the transporting and processing of most fluid substances without any ill effects. In the future it may even be possible to reduce the drag on a ship's hull or on a submarine by injecting a water soluble polymer into the boundary layer on the body. Since many of the phenomena exhibited by viscoelastic fluids, such as the swelling of a jet as …
