Organic Degradation Of The Ground Water In The Proximity Of A Refuse Disposal Site, Wayne Evan Mohler Jan 1969

Organic Degradation Of The Ground Water In The Proximity Of A Refuse Disposal Site, Wayne Evan Mohler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ground water degradation resulting from refuse deposition in or near the ground water table has in recent years, become increasingly important. Although about 95 percent of the total fresh water reserves are underground sources, they presently provide only approximately 17 percent of the total amount of water used for all purposes in the country (1). There is much interest in developing ground water sources to a greater extent to supply our ever increasing demands. Not enough information is presently available to delineate accurately the effect that refuse disposal in or near the ground water has upon the quality of the …

Some Thoughts On Quantum Mechanics And Some Approximate Methods For The Calculation Of Electronic State Functions, James W. Mentele Jan 1969

Some Thoughts On Quantum Mechanics And Some Approximate Methods For The Calculation Of Electronic State Functions, James W. Mentele

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of the high-speed electronic computer, applied quantum mechanics has become a valuable tool for chemical research. However, there are yet a large number of approximations involved in any application of molecular quantum mechanics. The decision of which of the many procedures to employ for any particular problem depends on the needed accuracy of results, the availability of computer resources, and, of course, the information desired. Also, conformability with previous calculations and ease of interpretation can be of consequence. For this last reason, making the state function for a molecular system a function of atomic orbitals has achieved …

A Study Of The Origins And Development Of Kelo-Land Television, William Craig Mcnamara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years television has become a topic for intensive study at American universities. This is shown by the multiplicity of studies reported in the annual research lists in Speech Monographs. Consistent with this research emphasis in television, several reasons influenced the undertaking of this current study. One reason was a personal interest in the field of television. The writer has been involved in broadcasting since he was in high school, and plans to make his career in television. Another reason for the selection of this topic was that this type of study had never been attempted in South Dakota. …

An Economic Analysis Of Some Aspects Of Medical Service Availability In Northwest South Dakota, Leland G. Bierman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A community which has its own hospital and doctor is benefited in many ways. First, the people in the community are near medical care in times of emergency. Second, hospital patients from the community are near family and friends when receiving care. Third, a community may be benefited economically by the presence of a hospital facility because additional jobs are provided, and people from the surrounding area are given increased incentive to come to the town in purchasing other goods. Also, adequate medical services are of importance in attracting new industry into a town. The trend today, however, is away …

Food habits of whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the northern Black Hills were studied during fall and winter 1966067 and 1967-68 and also during summer 1967. Summer study was confined to aspen (Populus tremuloides) areas and involved stomach analysis and a pasture study. Fall and winter food habits were determined by stomach analysis only. Associated aspen vegetation was sampled to find a representative site for construction of a 0.7 acre enclosure. Two deer were placed in a utilization section of the enclosure for 18 days during mid-summer. Annual growth was clipped in a control section of the pasture to estimate …

This study is a part of a research project conducted by the Rural Sociology Department at South Dakota State University in the spring of 1967. The general aims of the …

An Inquiry Into School-To-Home Communications Among Selected South Dakota Communities, Larry K. Tennyson Jan 1969

An Inquiry Into School-To-Home Communications Among Selected South Dakota Communities, Larry K. Tennyson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The demand for information about schools is increasing dramatically. War and cancer are the only subjects that claim greater public interest today," according to Leslie J. Stiles, professor of inter-disciplinary studies at Northwestern University. This opinion is shared by others in the field of educational public information, some of whom question the topical-coverage allocation and the display given to educational news by the press and by school officials The contrast between what parents want to know about schools and what is disseminated to them about schools has been described by researchers for nearly forty years. Yet, Stiles says, little progress …

Ecological And Trophic Distribution Of Pesticides In Lack Poinsett, South Dakota, Michael Robert Hannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ecological and trophic distributions of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota were studies. Components of the ecosystem analyzed were water, bottom sediment, zooplankton, benthic algae, crayfish, aquatic insects and fish. Concentrations of aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, methoxychlor, and toxaphene were determined by gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. DDT and its metabolites, DDD and DDE, were the highest residues detected in all trophic levels examined. Heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrine, dieldrin, and lindane were present in the majority of sample types, while neither endrin nor methoxyshlor was detected above analytical confidence limits in any …

A Study Of Land-Grant University Alumni Magazines And Of Reader Responses To The Montana Collegian Of Montana State University, Jeffrey B. Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was confined to the current state of affairs in alumni publishing at Land-Grant universities, for several reasons. Perhaps the main one is that the author is an alumni editor at one of these universities (Montana State University) and is also an alumnus of another one (South Dakota State University). Brought in from the newspaper field in the summer of 1967 as the Montana Collegian's first "professional" editor, the author had a broad mandate from the president of the institution, from the alumni director and the public relations director. Change the magazine, broaden its coverage and content and improve …

George W. Hopp : Brookings County Press, Kenneth E. Schaack

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first and primary objective of this study is to uncover and compile information about Hopp and the County Press. The second and secondary objective of the study is to point out characteristics of the county press and Hopp which seem to be typical of other early Dakota papers and editors. No attempt is made to reach any general conclusions which would be applicable to all papers in all parts of the United States. What was the Brookings area like before 1890? What did Hopp and the Press do for Brookings area development? What type of man was George W. …

The Status Of Journalism In North Dakota High Schools, Neil Rae Mcfadgen Jan 1969

The Status Of Journalism In North Dakota High Schools, Neil Rae Mcfadgen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the mass media exerting a tremendous influence on our day-to- day living, scholastic journalism with its emphasis on mass communication becomes a vital part of any high school curriculum. Career literature written about opportunities in journalism strives to motivate the high school student to consider professional journalism as his life' s work. Even though the percentage of high school students who have been active in journalism functions and then elect professional journalism as a career has been small in the past, there has been a decided increase in the college journalism enrollments since the year 1951. According to the …

A Critical Evaluation Of Stephen Crane's "The Monster", James M. Schubert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stephen Crane is an American writer whose works appear more popular now than they were in his own day. Most critics believe that his honesty, originality, and artistry are responsible for his current popularity. His most popular works, including The Red Badge .Of Courage (1894) and "The Open Boat" (1897), were very successful when they were first published and are still widely read. The fact that Crane led such· an exciting and original life makes him an especially interesting author, but he has received increasing critical recognition as an important figure in American literary history. Crane is associated with various …
